The Team
Mare Nostrum is a modification for Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 being developed by Sandstorm Productions, which formed in July 2006 upon the merger of the Burning Sands and Campagna Italiana mod teams. Since the union the team has gone from strength to strength and produced the first public beta version of Mare Nostrum in March 2008.
The Mod
Experience some of the fiercest battles of WWII across North Africa with Mare Nostrum [mah-re nohs-troo
m; Eng.] Building on the realistic, tactical game play that made Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 a fan favourite, Mare Nostrum lets players battle it out in an all new setting. Featuring British, Australian, German and Italian nations, choose from a range of authentic weaponry or crew one of 10 fully realised vehicles. With 8 different battle environments the game play is varied from gritty street to street fighting in urban surroundings to all out tank warfare in the open desert. This is North Africa, but not like you have seen it before.
In the Press
Mare Nostrum has enjoyed wide ranging media exposure and was voted into the top 100 unreleased mods in the ModDB 2007 Mod of the Year awards. On the 17th October 2008, Mare Nostrum became the first third party game MOD to be made available through Steam.
Mare Nostrum has also been featured on Gamepsy, AMD GAME! and IGN.

For many of you this will be your first foray into the deserts of North Africa, but for those of you who have played before, we have a lot of exciting new content. The key additions are a range of armour, 4 new maps, and the addition of Italian infantry (for full details click the link below).
Most importantly, the biggest new change is that we are now available to download directly through Steam. This will mean you need never worry about missing an update or patch in the future. We’d like to thank both Valve and Tripwire Interactive for this wonderful opportunity and for all their support.
Rest assured we are not going to just sit back and take it easy now. You should expect updates in the not too distant future (we already have a lot of progress made on our next patch) and now we have a solid base in North Africa it seems only natural to start contemplating other Mediterranean locations. If you have suggestions or information you’d like to share with us, or simply want to be part of this community, then please visit our forums.
So whilst you’re waiting for Mare Nostrum to download why not go through our activity checklist.

Any servers with humans playing this mod?
Plenty at present, 1.3 was released this weekend through steam, so go download it Store.steampowered.com and check out the trailer
They said MN 1.3b would be released in mid august right? Still nothing to be spotted :(.
However, whén it comes out, it'll be awesomeness all day long! MN is much more qualitative then, say, DH.. Can't wait
Personally i cant see how you can say that.
DH is a bloody good game
and well made.
Mind you there are some retards who make stupid maps.
but no one even plays MN so.
I'm not saying DH sucks, it's just a WIP. Mare Nostrum is too, but has way nicer animations and sounds (IMO). And why I think DH is 'rougher': For example most of the reloading sounds have been 'recycled' to be used in just about every rifle there (although there are exceptions). They just made too much, too quick, instead of (what MN did) start small, but good. And that no-one plays Mare Nostrum is because it's kinda small. This should be over with 1.3.
I had to vote low on this as the mod really isn't all that much content driven. RO allows for so much freedom when it comes to these total conversions and Mare Nostrum really let me down.
I'd like to see work done on the existing British and the adding of Americans in Africa before they start tossing out Italian content. There's so much more that can be done with the African Campaign that it always seems to be looked over or passed by in every game that features it.
I'm just overall disappointed and I expected more (there's only 4 or 5 servers running this mod and no one ever plays it). When I have played Mare Nostrum it's like playing Day of Defeat: Source with more realism (small Infantry based maps, little to no vehicles). I'll keep watching this mod but I've really stopped holding my breath.
With our first release we have a lot of ground work to cover such as the main chunk of coding to add in new weapons, nations and classes etc.. Now we have all of that done we can focus on the content and we are releasing an update with vehicles and more weapons soon, so don't write us off just yet.. :)
This mod looks just awesome, but I want to know if I can still play my original Red Orchestra, if when installed will this mod takeover my game, or will it have a separate launcher?
It will have a seperate launcher, of course.
No don't worry you can still play RO, MN uses its own launcher.
