Kings and Conquerors: The Hellenistic Era is a total conversion modification for Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots.
Our aim is to bring the Hellenistic period to life.

  • A set of highly unique factions.
  • A huge number of new units with high quality textures, and most with custom models
  • New unit types, such as priests, levies, mercenaries and elite units.
  • Many new wonders and buildings. Nations will receive Unique Buildings in addition to Unique Units that provide a range of bonuses.
  • A new political system with three tiers of policy decisions, providing strong bonuses and unlocking new units and buildings.
  • Army reforms can be enacted to upgrade and unlock units.
  • Combat mechanics overhauled. Ranged units may now miss their target, flanking damage has been drastically increased and units can no longer turn around instantly to counter an attack from behind.
  • Increased population limit and map sizes; a number of maps have been altered to fit with the mod's Hellenistic period setting.

We can use the help of any experienced modders who are willing to make a contribution. We need modellers, animators and scripters especially. Please send a PM here if you are interested.

If you have any feedback or issues, please post in the mod forum here: Moddb.com

The Hellenistic 0.11 has now been released! This version features several small additions and fixes to make the Roman and Macedonian factions more complete.

Rise of Nations

The Hellenistic Era 0.11

Rise of Nations: Extended Edition

The Hellenistic Era 0.11 is now available on the Steam Workshop! You can subscribe to the mod here.

IMPORTANT: This mod will crash if it's priority is set below certain mods, notably the Terrain 5 Extended mod. To fix this, go to Tools and Extras => Steam Workshop, select the Terrain 5 Extended mod from the list and move it to the bottom by pressing "priority down". Then, just to be safe, move The Hellenistic Era to the top of the list by pressing "priority up".

  • New units: Kestrosphendonetai and Hiera Ile for the Macedonians, Vigiles for the Romans.
  • A number of textures and models have been improved
  • Thanks to The_Fulcrum, heavily-damaged forts can now be captured if you have more soldiers nearby than its owner. With the Informer ability you can also capture undamaged forts.
  • The Peasant Dwellings, Noble Residence, Sporting Centre and Cultural Centre now produce resource trickles.
  • Several bugs and balancing issues have been fixed.

  • The following maps do not work with the Big Huge or Huge map sizes and will cause the game to crash:

  • - Atlantic Sea Power
    - East Meets West
    - Nile Delta

  • In order for the AI build orders to work, make sure that you list the human players before the AI players when setting up a quick battle, and make sure that you are using red as your player colour.
  • Many of the scripted features have not been implemented, so you won't be able to spawn mobs from cities or convert enemy citizens into slaves for instance.
  • Due to the custom script and the new models with higher polycounts, the mod will be more demanding on your computer. However if you have a decent computer then it shouldn't that noticeable.
  • With the exception of the Trireme and Ballista, naval and siege warfare have not been touched on and probably won't be until after the first release yet due to heavy modelling and animation requirements.

We hope you enjoy Kings and Conquerors: The Hellenistic Era! Please let us know if you come across any problems with this mod, and don't hesitate to give us any feedback you might have. There's also a forum where you can post your thoughts: Moddb.com

Firstly, make sure that you've set the Gunpowder Age (Hellenistic Age) as the starting and ending age. Also, the mod only works if you select the Turks (Romans in the mod) or the Romans (Macedonians in the mod) in the quick battle setup menu. In the future we plan to add more factions but these are the only two available currently.

Awesome mod but is it somehow possible to make it so catapults and rams can at least be built in their vanilla state? The ballistae is awesome but it doesn't seem to do much good against the forts that have insanely high defense/hit-points. I don't even seem to be able to destroy the enemies forts at all, even after I maxed out Roman tech/upgrades to test it out. I could throw 50 ballistae at it and an army of 300 units and the forts still seem to take an inordinate amount of time to bring down. I actually gave up though as it wasn't making much progress. given the huge amount of attack/hitpoints/defense it's literally impossible to do any type of siege. still awesome mod though.

Cheers! I decided to make ballistae less effective against forts in order to prolong sieges and thus give them a more significant role in the game. That being said, there are a few ways to shorten the siege. First of all, you can capture heavily-damaged forts if you have more soldiers nearby than its owner, and this also extends to undamaged forts that have informers placed on them. Secondly, there is the battering ram which will be included in the mod's next release. Battering rams are somewhat more vulnerable but they are also cheaper and have a stronger attack than the ballistae.

Motorbike rig being created. If it works, consider your Celtic chariot to be next.

I can't give you an accurate answer because there is still a lot of work left to do for the next release and progress has basically slowed to a halt due to real life commitments. It definitely won't be happening any time soon I'm sorry to say.

Hello! I really love your mod. I was just wondering what could be the way to use the mod's units and buildings in scenario editor? I have read your previous comment saying you will be releasing a new version for it and the current process is long. But I really want to use the custom materials to build scenarios. Can you explain the process for now until you release the version?

Okay here's the process you have to go through. If you've only got the Steam workshop version of this mod, you'll first have to download the non-workshop version of the mod (http://www.moddb.com/mods/kings-and-conquerors/downloads/the-hellenistic-era-01-extended-edition) and follow the process below but using the Extended Edition directory (C:\\program files\steam\steamapps\common\rise of nations). Also, as long as you have this mod in the scenario editor you won't be able to play normal unmodded RoN.

To replace the core files with the mod's ones, first of all make sure that you backup the "data", "mapstyles" and "tribes" folders in the Thrones and Patriots directory (C:\\program files\microsoft games\rise of nations\thrones and patriots). Then find The Hellenistic Era in the "mods" folder (this is in the main RoN directory, not the T&P one), and copy and paste the contents of the mod's "data", "mapstyles" and "tribes" folders into their respective T&P folders. Lastly, go into that backup data folder you made and find the files that were added by the mod (these will have been last edited in 2013-2014). Copy these back into the T&P data folder. If you want to play normal RoN again, just copy all the contents of the backup folders back into their respective RoN folders.

thanks! That really worked. But I wanted to use walls. You said we can use walls and other models in scenario editor. I am not disappointed but I would be glad to be able to use them too. Appreciate your work! (y)

Ah yes I should have mentioned that the walls aren't actually available in the mod yet, but after the next update you will be able to use them in the scenario editor.
