Description

As I promised, here are some pics showing some more new Roman units, this time from the army of Republican Rome, as they fight against the Macedonians.

The lightly armoured spearmen at the top of the picture are Rorarii. These men are reserves placed behind the triarii. As poorer citizens of Roman society, they can only afford a helmet and scutum to protect themselves. They are intended as support units, and they should not be expected to hold out for long against more heavily-equipped soldiers.

The well-armoured soldiers on the right of the picture are Pedites Extraordinarii. As the best fifth of the socii infantry, these men have been selected to form the vanguard of the legion and protect the commander. The equipment of an extraordinarius is mainly of Greek influence and includes an aspis shield, kopis sword and bronze cuirass and greaves. They also wear attic helmets decorated with crests and feathers. As elite soldiers, Pedites Extraordinarii are costly but very valuable.

Lastly we have the Republican-era centurions, highly capable officers distinguishable by their transverse crests and capes. As officers, centurions are fearsome warriors, with superb armour and skill, and can also enhance nearby soldiers with special abilities and bonuses.
