If the island needs to be split up I suggest doing something similar to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Make each of the key areas a large map in itself, probably separated by the electric fences. Then allow the player to move in between the areas at will through certain checkpoints/loading zones. These could be holes in fences, roads, or a cave. It will keep the feeling of exploration while dealing with your problem. I imagine you'd only have to split it into four maps or so. Whatever you choose to do, good luck, I'm really looking forward to this.
I know nothing of how that would work, but I know that Crysis didn't really have big areas. It was actually pretty limited if you really think about it. It just looked big and the areas were pretty much just mission-related so there wasn't too much fun in exploring
Actually, if you use the console to leave the playable area, each level rendered the entire Island, just with far less detail in the non-playable areas. If you turn on god mode and noclipping you can run around on the rest of it, it just doesn't have a texture beyond grass. It can support large areas, even if the levels themselves are smaller than they seem.
Now that you are shying away from the 16 km map how do you plan on breaking the island up? Will it be by the paddock with the fences as load points? It would be cool if when the power is off you climb the fences like a ladder. But when its on you get fried.

Why not reach out to other mods with similar interests for the same engine and work something out to combine forces.

Yes, there will be a MP aspect of this mod.
The DVD for JP is nice. It also has alot of features. Its probably only $10 now.
About $20 at Best Buy USD.
The Jurassic Park Adventure Pack has all 3 movies and is only $20 at Best Buy, or $10 for the first one.
