Island War 2017 by TemplarGFX
Island War is first and foremost an Artificial Intelligence system designed to create incredibly reactive
and intelligent army units that are capable of planning and reacting to sophisticated situational offensive and
defensive encounters, utilising anything available, all on-the-fly.
In development for over 8 years, Island War is a completely new game built inside Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising.
It is a Tactical Military Action Shooter aimed at providing realistic, actioned packed dynamic battles in any location,
at any time, under any situation.
PRE-REQUISITES :
Island War 2017 requires a moddable version of Operation Flashpoint - Dragon Rising. Unfortunately Codemasters locked out modding with their last 1.02 Steam Patch. While Island War can be played without mods, it is designed to work with them.
To upgrade your Steam (or CD) installation of OFDR to a moddable version, download this file :
Mediafire.com
Rename the original OFDR.EXE to OFDR ORIGINAL.EXE and then copy the exe in this ZIP into your game. Steam will now run this version
for you.
*note if you validate your installation, steam will remove this patched executable*
HOW TO INSTALL :
Follow these simple steps to upgrade your Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising to Island War 2017
1)Navigate to your games installation folder
2)Rename the "DATA_WIN" folder to "DATA_WIN.BAK" so you can easily revert if you wish.
3)Copy the ENTIRE contents of this ZIP into your games install folder. Replace any files if asked.
4)Thats IT!
HOW TO PLAY :
Simply choose "Single Mission" from the Main Menu and you will find a set of 23 missions under the category "IW2017".
Choose one of these starting points, and then go!
HOW TO SWITCH TO LONG-PLAY :
Island War 2017 comes by default as 23 missions that can be played as long as you like, but each time the island begins under
the control of the PLA.
You can however play Island War in a full extended mode which keeps your progress on the Island between plays, allowing you to
attempt to take the entire island for the US forces!
To switch to (or from) long-play mode, head to your games installation folder and edit IW2017.cfg with notepad.
Modify this line :
Always Load Checkpoint File (all)
0
to
Always Load Checkpoint File (all)
1
And save the file. When you next start an Island War mission, it will load the state it last saved to allow you to continue.
MULTIPLAYER :
Island War is fully Cooperative for up to 4 players. Simply select one of the 23 missions as a "Cooperate Single Mission" and go!
BlueDrake42 and company have released a Multiplayer Revival Mod which allows game browsing and Island War is completely compatible

BEST MOD!
the modified OFDR.exe downloadable from Mediafire has got a virus: WindowsHeur!
I am not seeing any virus' on the files I linked. Either that's a heuristic detection (i.e. not a virus at all) or you have a virus already on your computer
AVG is pointing explictly to OFDR.exe after unpacking it from .rar
I will add it to an exception, risking it will infect my computer....let's see.
are there no vehicles in the island war mission only thing ive seen are the beginning helicopters and a jeep no friendly or enemy vehicles like tanks and apcs
I've encountered enemy jeeps,APCs and even a tank at one point (though no gunships or transports from the enemy as of yet),and i have also seen allies commandeer abandoned and repaired enemy vehicles to assault other bases/checkpoints. I guess it depends on what part of the island you chose as insertion point and how open the environment that you are about to assault is?

Ok I wanted to try out this mod, since I'm interested in AI mod changes as an old OFP/ArmA veteran, I checked out many AI mods and was curious what this mod is about.
But the game is simply unplayable with an FOV of 65. The game lacks a lot of graphics options, so it'a pity but after playing for 5 mins I'm fed up with low graphics quality and the lack of customization of the game.
Back to Stalker Call of Chernobyl...
It's the gameplay that makes it.
And it's getting better with Templar's hard work.
You need to see past the graphics.

I've been there, you can imagine...
like 2001 OFP was also about the gameplay and not the graphics, but since then ArmA II/III with ACE an other mods has made so much progress (i.e. Robalo's AI mods) and the graphics too, so OFDR feels very dated now. I could survive the bad graphics but I can't stand the terrible FOV.
Thanks for giving it a go. you should have tried my cinematic mode to increase your fov to 78 degrees if FOV is a big issue for you
(buried)
I will reinstall the game extra to test your cinematic mode. I was looking on the internet for any FOV change mod by couldn't find any, didn't know you built in one in your release. Is there also a chance to get rid of the crosshair?
EDIT: Just found on the net, that you have simply to play on hardcore to get rid of the hud.
What other addons/tweaks do you recommend to play with IW2017 to enhance realism and graphics?
EDIT 2: I reinstalled the game but can't find any option for cinematic mode?
EDIT 3: OK I found the info about the changes to the config file here on moddb, will try the cinematic mode
How do you enable the cinematic mode? I didnt find any instructions in the read me file. Thanks for all the hard work.
I dont know why but on all of the missions the helicopters never land they just hover obove the ground
Hi Timmah,
This is usually caused if you are not running OFDR 1.02 Ensure you have updated your OFDR installation before installing all the mods!
Does this include all of your other mods?
I seem to be very prone to crashing. example. If I die the game always crashes, it also crashes when I change setting. Furthermore, the game also crashes at random point without seemly any reason. Don't know whats up I am using the mod exe, and have followed the instructions fully.
i'm having the exact same issues. really a shame.
Figured it out thanks to TeamBZ's comment further down. You need to replace a few lines in your weaponusagevalues.xml to the original version from this mod, instead of the one from the Ultimate AI 2017 mod.
Here's the file, already edited: Mega.nz
It goes in this location:
"Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising\data_win\ai\globalknowledge"
When can we expect an update
The new executable will not function. Windows 10 latest updates. First time I'm trying it. Windows can't access the specified device path. Or you may have inappropriate permissions to access them. Also right clicking on this .exe or trying to interact it almost freezes up my file browser and only this file. Something isn't right with it.
if i understood well... i have to install this mod first and after this, i nneed to install all other smaller ones to "update"?
Yes, there are slight fixes and improvements in the updates. its not required but recommended
.
Can i still play campaign and other custom missions fine after installing this?
hey man ive been playing island warfare for ****** ever, i usually play it until the save game corrupts and then shelf it for a minute. good to see you dropped another version. its a shame on the download count, the last one was a banger and reading about all the time and work youve put into it on top of the creative and practical AI improvements youve made im really stoked to play it.
such an underrated game, such an underrated mod. ill give this one a go. keep it coming man.
to be honest man after 2 hours of playing all ive ran into is a lot of CTDs and weird freezing after reload checkpoints.
i dont know man im kinda bummed on this release. hopefully theres some patches coming. everything else is great, but CTDs are bad. every time i die.
no crashes for me, install the patch..
Can i use this mod with the steam version?
Yes you can
BRILLIANT!
I cant even begin to thank all y modders.Y r what makes PC gaming what it is.AAA companies certainly dont.
I have only intalle this yet but im sure i will love it.
I got it on steam winter sale for about 2 usd.Its completely beyond me why ppl pay 60+++usd for some half broken-lootboxinfested BS.
Have a very nice NY!
Not sure if the dev still reads the comments around here, but i just want to say thank you for making one of the single most badass mods out there for Dragon Rising! After my constant frustrations with Arma requiring mods in order to truly be playable (and still suffer game braking bugs and glitches in spite of this), i finally bought Dragon Rising on steam during the sale, and i don't regret it one bit! Played the campaign straight and had those moments at 4am where i thought to myself "can i squeeze in another mission?"
instead of "stupid piece of crap, what the hell broke this time?" when playing Arma 2/3. Finally, gameplay where the ai doesn't immediately derp on me or have scripts break preventing me from completing a campaign/scenario.
This mod in particular gives me the chance to play the game a lot further and a lot longer than i'd imagine, as the default set of Fire Team Engagements that come along with the steam release of Dragon Rising, while fun, are quick and sadly fleeting.I'm happy the FOV is a lot less restrictive in this mod, though ironically i'd have liked it if i had the option to keep the post processing that the game had by default, since it kinda gives the game character (though granted also made it harder to see the enemy by extension).
I guess the only true issue i have with this mod is the load-save feature. When i activated Long play mode, every time i tried to load checkpoint, the game would indeed load, but performance kinda dies and the game magically spikes as if trying too hard to keep track of all the actions that took place during the time the checkpoint was activated. Playing this Capture the Island style mode would truly benefit a working save-load feature since i don't want to feel like my progress means nothing every time i push through several bases and get as far as 10% progress before getting nuked by an APC that rushed my position. My issue isn't the new difficulty and damage model, as i like the additions, but just the save-load functionality.
Not sure if you're going to make any updates to this any time soon, but just know that you made another of the small but dedicated Dragon Rising community happy and glad that this game exists. Maybe one day someone else will pick up the torch and make an experience as accessible as OFP and deep enough to be like Arma without all the game breaking, experience ruining bugs/glitches that come along with that series (and hopefully provide an sdk! i know it kinda sounds like too much to add, but i honestly feel like OFP:DR would easily contend with arma if it had that modularity available to the fanbase).
I get the same issue loading a checkpoint. It loads but it is unplayable at 2 frames per second. I used msi afterburner and noticed when loading checkpoint the graphics card is not even being used. Weird. What I do is in Long Play I restart the mission and at least all the control points I captured are still under US control. Then I take a vehicle to the spot where I died and continue playing.
Do you experience any crashes after you update ultimate AI February 21st 2017 update? My game crashes between 2 to 10 minutes of play time at every starting point. I have to install the mod all the updates but leave out the ultimate AI February 21st 2017 update. It works fine after that but I want to experience the updated version. I don't even know the difference between the AI in the original IW2017 file and the new update in ultimate AI February 21st 2017 file?
I only played Island War 2017 itself without the new ultimate AI update and it seemed to handle itself perfectly fine without it. I could've sworn reading somewhere that forcing the EGO engine to the edge of it's programming will usually result in crashes (like this one time i played at the airport LZ and when i was capturing the medical tents location a PLA APC charged us; i quickly ordered my AT Rifleman to rocket it to death and some friendly fireteams did so at the same time and the action in that one spot was so intense, it crashed to desktop).
I guess just to be safe, you can always just play with the stock ultimate AI packaged along with Island war 2017 and we can hopefully wait for a heads up from the dev if he ever comes around to reading the comments (when not busy ofc)
I got a hold of TemplarGFX through his YouTube video of IW2017 Youtu.be
He said that the load checkpoint has something to do with the memory management in the game and he never found a fix for it.
He also recommended trying different root folders in the ultimate AI 2017 February 21st update. All the updates work really well except for the root folder ai within the Ultimate AI update. All the other folders within the Ultimate AI update work without any crashes. All the other updates don't seem to cause the crash. I'm going to test each file one at a time within the ai folder and then compare the file that causes the crash with the file from the non updated IW2017 file and go from there.
I did extensive trial and error with all the files in the Ultimate AI 2017 February 21st update. I installed one at a time to see if the game would crash. I deducted that it was crashing from the ai folder. All other folders and files in the ultimate AI 2017 February 21st update did not cause a crash (or any of the other updates for that matter). I finally deducted that it was the weaponsusagevalues.xml file causing the crashes. When I used the oringinal xml file overriding the new xml file there were no crashes, but the new xml file crashes for sure.
So I took the original xml file (from Island War 2017) and edited all the values to match the new xml file (ultimate AI 2017 February 21st update)but did not add any of the new weapons. So the original file had the same weapons in it (no new ones) I just edited the numbers to match the new xml file. It crashed. So it must be an original weapons in the original xml file with the new values entered. So you could install all the updates and just replace the new weaponsusagevalues.xml with the original weaponsusagevalues.xml and the game should be very staple, it was for me at least.
I believe I have narrowed it down to the grenade weapons. Specifically, sa51m32. But I'm getting inconstant results. I took the new xml file and put the orinigial values for just the sa51m32 and tested it in game. I went through multiple battles with no crashes but twice the game crashed wile driving. So I don't know for sure.
These are my results. For whatever they are worth for a 11 year old game. :)
Just wanted to say thank you to TemplarGFX for all his work and time. Thank you so much for a great mod. So much fun! Godspeed.
Could you share the file?
