Hello Everyone!
From yesterday night Insurgency is available as a Steam download. If you have another Source game, it will appear in your "My Games" list and you will be able to install it from there with 1 click. Please check an extract of the official announcement below.
"The debut of these MODs on Steam marks the beginning of a new level of support for the MOD community by putting the leading MODs at the finger tips of over 15 million targeted gamers."
The first MOD squad is available now. Once installed, these MODs will appear in the Steam "My Games" list and the MODs will receive automatic updates just like other games on Steam. Also, these MODs now take advantage of Steamworks, providing stat tracking and tighter integration with the Steam community.
Right now, with over 1,300 simultaneous players on crowded INS servers we would like to stop for a moment and give a big THANK YOU to our community, the loyal INS players and forum regulars that have endured with us the good and bad moments. We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for your support. The servers are full now, and you are able to play with a lot of new people. You have a great opportunity to model the future of the INS community by teaching those new players how to get the most out of this game.
A lot of people are playing INS right now... are you?
No, because it crashes with a C++ error whenever a map spawns. :P
It's also still running with the Ep1 engine - I thought it had been ported over to OB?
Not yet, I believe the next beta version which is supposed to have a bunch of new features including a new war theater will be ported to the Orange Box.
Anyhow, I'm quite fond of how Insurgency played with teamwork, otherwise it's crap.
Too many grunt tkers with the steam release otherwise GREAT MOD!
true, true. Greatgame, but the autokick for Tking should be risen up by the serveradmins a bit, until there are less grunts.
I think this mod would have to be one of the best produced for HL2... far better than CSS and Zombie Pathetic... still can't believe that crap got onto steam...
Zombie Panic? hehe How's your Star Crap I mean trek mod coming along? Don't talk crap just because you got nothing out.
One bad side I see from this is that now the mod files (like weapons models, sounds, etc) are packed into a cfg, making more hard to see and change them to customize the mod, or to know the names of the weapons you want to summon into the game, for example...
Another bad point is that now is not possible get the mod from another place than for steam, making impossible get old versions if you dont like the new ones or you want just revive old times (often happens with good mods)
Besides these points is great that they are able to distribute their mods on steam, good luck ^^.
You can extract the GCF files using GCFScape, then modify them... Alternatively, you can simply create custom files and place them in the appropriate directory (e.g. a replacement player model), and it overrides the ones inside the GCF file. So it's actually just as easy as it was before!
As for old versions, you can just down the old versions from whatever file site has them, and install them alongside the Steam versions in the SourceMods directory.
I rounded up 8 people to play tonight based on this release but then the conflict with the old download version and the Steam version caused a few hours confusion. Still, this is such a fantastic mod this transition is worth it but it could have been made a wee bit clearer that the Steam version was incompatable with the download. We all ended up playing on the downloaded version!
