HOOVER1979 UltraHD Texture Pack


This is my first demo release of my work in progress UltraHD Texture pack for Doom, Doom II, Plutonia Experiment and Evilution.

The texture pack is in 5 files. One main file and 4 game specific override files. this is not only so that all 4 doom games have their own skies and don't all share Doom 2's skies but because some textures in The Plutonia Experiment and Evilution use the same names as some of the Doom/Doom2 textures. for each game, you will need to load both the main file, and the override for your game. For example for Doom 1, you would need to load the main file in a batch file and then the doom 1 override afterwards.

This pack is still a long way from completion and all textures presented in this pack are subject to change. I am teaching myself as I go, and as my skills further develop textures that aren't up to scratch with the developed skills will be remade so the utmost attention to detail and overall quality is upheld.

These textures are of a whopping resolution and this pack is designed for GZDoom. This pack will crash Doomsday/Risen 3D at multiple points with memory allocation errors it is due to some textures/skies being larger then the strict requirements the JDoom engine will allow. I plan to make a Doomsday/Risen3D compatible pack when this one is finished. I also plan on making a bright map pack for the GZDoom pack and a smaller 1k texture pack for low-end machines. I have only tested this pack with the 64bit Gzdoom 3.1 The same crash issues may be present with the 32bit version of GZDoom, but I am unsure of that as I haven't tested this on the 32Bit version of GZDOOM. Use this on the 32bit version at your own risk, and don't be surprised if you get crashes.

If you want to use any of these textures in your own project you are welcome as long as the following conditions are adhered too.

1: You must not modify my work
2: You must not claim my work to be your own
3: You must give me credit for my work on your mod's page, in the accompanying readme file and everywhere you advertise your mod this includes linking to my ModDB page and My Deviantart Repository.

In the screenshots, I also use the Ketchup v5 blood mod, and in the video, I used both the Ketchup V5 blood mod and the Doom Metal Music mod. these mods are not made by me and all credits go to the authors of those mods. I just made the textures.

UPDATE: My health is improving, as are my abilities to work on textures. I have to work slowly and sporadically, but I can't push myself too fast or my health will decline again. After all, a candle that burns twice as bright burns for half as long.

This update is to say these things:

1. I am still alive and kicking (although some days are better than others).
2. Development of the Texture pack is still under development.
3. I don't want to let you all down.

My health has declined, beyone chronic pain, relating to my liver and kidneys, and I am in a private hospital for treatment with no set discharge date.

Worse yet Photoship CC 2018 got wiped from my rig when it crashed, whilst sldeloaded into DIMMDrive. I am waiting for a new patient that has a mobile plan that allows on demand top ups so I can buy them some data so they can hotspot me so I can redownload PS CC 2018 and get back to doing my textures.

The hospital was gracious enough to let me take my rig in to feel more at home but their wifi is 56kbps and has a 200Mb daily download allowance and no upload allowance.

Hopefully someone will be admitted that I can pay to add to their data so they can hotspot me to redownload PS CC2018 so I can get back to texturing, it miss making textures like the deserts miss the rain.

I am not in a life threatening state but will be needing inpatient treatment for an indefinite time as I have no set discharge date.

I plan on releasing the next demo in the Jan/Feb period of 2018, once I have made some more new textures, and redone some of the existing ones, that I'm not quite happy with. When I get closer to an exact release date for the next demo I will let everyone know.

I still don't know when the final release will be finished though, I have been fighting through some health issues, Chronic back pain, Liver inflammation and a cyst on my right Kidney and Kidney infection in both Kidneys are making my life difficult, but although my health issues are slowing me down, I will not stop development as long as my heart is beating and my lungs draw breath. I will push through and keep working and I hope I can produce a texture pack you can all enjoy as much as I will.

Right now I wish Happy Holidays to you all and hope to bring you all a gift earlier in the new year.

wait... these textures look way too good to be simple algorithm based upscaled textures. are you mental enough to be redoing the textures into UltraHD quality by hand?! how... does that work? I mean do you work 24 7 on each individual texture? how could one remake by hand all these textures into such a high resolution? or are you not alone? either way, when I first saw this project, I thought, "another upscaling project" now I see that this couldn't have been done with a simple upscaler. how... do you make textures like this? Because if I could learn I could use it to make sprites and textures for RPG maker MV or maybe even my (still on back burner) xenosaga UE4 project. and... well, I love this project now. keep it up.

But If you want to learn how to make these textures I use Adobe Photoshop CC2018 (The Photography package which consists of Photoshop CC + Lightroom cc, is cheaper than just subbing for Photoshop alone) and Filter Forge 6.0 Pro (Filter Forge 7.0 is now being sold and I plan on upgrading when I can afford to), which I use as a plugin for Photoshop, which allows my to proceduraly generate basic surfaces (Filter forge is almost always on sale too making it more affordable), which can be combined with different blend spaces and opacities to make more detailed surfaces, which can be used in textures with various tools in Photoshop to do the bevelling, drop shadows, outer/inner glows and then in some cases painting in lighting effects on multiple layers.

Thank you. Yes, I'm that mental and have been working on this pack for a long time, and will be on it for a long time yet. :p

I have been working solo on this and also fitting in my part-time Graphic Design job.

I have made all but one of the textures from scratch using Photoshop and Filter Forge plugin as my tools. I spent the last 10 years working as a graphic designer, and have spent nearly 2 years on this Texture Pack as my private project. The only texture that used upscaling was the iconic Doom Fleshy wall, as I couldn't use artistic license in that case or it would break the feel of Doom. However, I converted the original HD texture From KuriKai's DHTP into a B&W high contrast image and overlayed it onto a texture I made from scratch after bump mapping it and adding SSAO for further detail. I will credit the DHTP in my mod for their part in the project.

I am also steal self-teaching as I go, I am no experienced texture creator, I am learning as I go along and further developing my skills. My skills aren't yet at a point to recreate that fleshy wall from scratch without it looking like something else completely and breaking Doom's feel. Maybe down the track, I will become good enough to make it from scratch following the same design and getting the tiling seamless.

Depending on the textures I could get 8 done in one day or it could take over a month to get one texture done. This project is the real deal, and although I feel I bit off more than I can chew at times (I am retexturing Doom, Doom II, Plutonia Experiment and Evilution, as my first texture project), the results and the positive feedback by the Doom Community keeps me going, through all my chronic back pain.

I also plan on making a full set of bright map textures to go with the GZDoom version and release the pack in 3 different resolutions so it isn't restricted to those with a high-end rig with a 64bit OS, GTX1080+ and tons of RAM. I want everyone to enjoy my hard work.
