Complex is a free advanced game modification based on Relic Entertainment's Homeworld 2 game engine, free of any business directive, developed with passion and hard work, for experienced RTS players only. In a world of simplified games often under pressure to do well commercially, our challenge has been to create this ambitious project, for those who want more from a modern videogame.
Complex adds so much content too the original game, it does its name justice and does make the game more complex. The new units add some new strategic options, considerations need to be made of what your fleet will consist of as to make a fleet to best combat your enemy.
However this mod does have some major issues that I believe hold it back from being a fantastic mod that so many give it. The game has gone beyond complex, I feel it is more confusing for people who are new to the mod. It feels like new features were added just to make the mod seem lots more complex. Even after playing hundreds of matches against all forms of AI combinations, against my friends in 1 on 1 matches and even 2v4 I will always choose Hiigaran as they have the most work done to them, they have the widest variety of units and the most depth added. Which is a real shame because I love the Vaygr style of fleet tactics, but in countless trials I could never get a fleet of Vaygr ships to counter the Hiigarans.
Another major issue I found is in all the games I played I experienced a frame drop that made it almost unplayable on the larger games I played. Now while my machine is not the greatest it can play much bigger games on higher settings and maintain 60 frames. Yet Complex seems to slowly degrade over time and on my friends computer which is older then mine he cannot play on the larger maps or with more then 2 AI for long periods. It feels like a lack of optimization or testing but I have talked to others that have the same issue, which is very sad as this game needs to be played on the bigger games to experience all it has to offer.
Now despite the balance issues and the optimization problems I will still give this mod a 6/10, it is definitely above average but with these huge issues I don't feel like it truly deserves 9's and 10's. But all homeworld 2 players have to at least try it because it is amazing in its concept.
