A singleplayer mod for Half-Life based on a new version of Half-Life FX engine. While the main mod, HLFX:Single, that uses maximum of engine features, is still being developed, you can have an opinion of relatively small project entitled HLFX: Lost in Black Mesa.


Many people were missing during the Black Mesa incident. Only a few, a mere handful of people succeeded to reach the surface, where they were being awaited by armed troops of marines with an order to annihilate any witness of the catastrophe. You are Alex Jones, a young scientist that by a lucky chance worked in an HEV suit when it was an accident. When leaving your laboratory and entering an elevator you could not even imagine that the way out will be so long and difficult. Kindred and friends have already considered you a missing person. But can it be true that a person lost in a huge underground complex will meet them again and tell the truth about what was happened in the Black Mesa Research Facility?


The mod uses a lot of daring innovations brought by a latest version of Half-Life FX:

  • Dynamic bumpmapping for a flashlight
  • Parallax mapping
  • Shader script system
  • Refractive glass
  • Projective soft shadows
  • Projective flashlight
  • High-resolution textures and decals
  • Anisotropic texture filtering
  • Detail textures
  • Light bloom effect
  • Heat haze effect
  • Particle systems
  • Interactive physics elements


HLFX: Lost in Black Mesa consists of three gameplay levels. You will visit a laboratory complex and a part of Black Mesa monorail transit system. Like a HLFX:Single demo version, you will meet doors with keypads and will have an opportunity to manually delve into electric wiring to restore the power for some systems. Do not forget that Black Mesa complex is way too large, so there are some secret places in the game that are not accessed easily. Upon revealing a secret the game will show how much places like that there are on the level. And they are on each level, so keep your eyes open! In other respects this is a classic Half-Life-style gameplay - we still do our best to keep the original atmosphere. And you will judge whether we made it.


Please launch the mod only with the supplied launcher lbm_fx.exe located in the "lbm_fx/system" directory! Otherwise game may not work. If you need to run the game with additional peremeters, add them to the shortcut for that laucher. Please note that the game uses a modified opengl32.dll that is copied into Half-Life directory on game startup. When game shuts down this file is left in the game directory. In this case some anti-cheats may consider you a cheater and ban your CD-key. Therefore either disable anti-cheating software or manually delete opengl32.dll from Half-Life directory before running multiplayer games or mods. Chain Studios has no responsibility for a probable ban and frankly warns you.

i saw that panel ... clicked on it and only saw 2 things ... a power indicator and a x ... clicked on them and nothing happened. is something missing?

This means VGUI panel does not work for you.
Maybe you should try another version of HL...

this may b a bumb question ... but after playing this mod for a while, i'm stuck at a door that needs power to operate, i found the power room (i think) but can't figure out how to proceed. any help will be grately appreciated. thanks guys

You should use a panel opposite to the door in a power room. There is a window with a puzzle, use mouse to click the elements. When the puzzle is done, power will be up.

Wow, you guys fail to understand this mod is simply a test and tech demo of what is possible on the gold-source engine.
It's meant to show off graphical effects.

It's not meant to be the best mod ever or even have great gameplay or great mapping. Although in my opinion, gameplay is good and mapping is above decent.

Will the source of FX be available to all? Would be a shame if none of us can take advantage of such useful effects.

I didn't like this mod. Crashed for me multiple times but I'll ignore that. Level design is... well, it needs lots of work. Secret areas are not secret, item placement is ridiculous, the maps makes no sense, the Gargantua area is impossible and soooo on.

Fancy graphics helps a lot, but if you turn that off, the mod falls appart. I like the keypads and the physics but that's all.

I really enjoyed other mods based on HL's story, seriously, maybe because they focused on the gameplay and levels. You guys already show the fancy graphics on HL:fx single demo. This mod wasn't necessary.

Less FX and better gameplay. Go.

Arrange-mode (Not the WIP one, the released one) wasn't much better, it was an unoptimized laggy mess of random effects and crap, that was bundled with 2 decent HL style maps.

This mod hasn't crashed for me, that's your own issues I guess. Besides, people and their projects don't revolve around you, if they wanted to build a more tech-demo like mod, let them. You don't pay for these projects and you don't have any stake in them.

Yeah but I think this mod's main objective is the engine, not the campaign itself, but the maps are good though, it doesnt exactly need to be sick with detail, they are good for hl1 maps.

Can't stand someone isn't pleased with your mod? It does happen, get used to it.
