heXen:Edge of Chaos will be a new and free game, based on the original Hexen game that was developed by id Software and Raven Software. As of 2012 we have moved development to a standalone environment using the id tech 4 GPL engine.
The Doom3 engine (also called IDTech 4) is still a great engine that can compete with the latest games coming out today. It was with this in mind that we began, many years ago, the development of heXen: Edge of Chaos.

Edge of Chaos is being developed by a team of fans who have always loved the original Hexen since it came out. In fact, most of us spent countless hours with the entire series. When id Software released Doom3, we immediately saw immense potential in the engine itself; the 'Hell' maps gave us the inspiration to make a hack-and-slash game based, primarily, on the original Hexen.

Our story ties into the expansion packs and also touches upon the Heretic narrative; especially the incredible atmosphere painted into these rich worlds and their darkling journeys. We are still looking for talented team members, so if you have some work to show and think you might be able to help us, make sure to drop us a line!

2013 was a slower than desired year. 2014 will not be. The year has kicked off with an excited vigor and focus which has the team pretty pumped. First, we welcome programmer Calavera_Jo to the team who has helped bring some of this energy into the team. Very talented and enthusiastic, he's already tackled a wide range of tasks from a refined blocking system to editor fixes to cleaning the environment of our code more.

The maps have continued to make progress as Caffeine Freak has become much more efficient in his terrain modelling. H2m2 is nearing it's completion of layout and detailing with game play to follow. Zurra has been taking care of some of our art needs. We still would love to add more members to our team (especially artists!), so if interested please contact us.

We'll be looking to assemble a small testing team once again with a current eye around late second quarter. More on that to come in the next few months.

Game on.

Wow, I like the track you guys posted, it's very Hexen like. I'm a huge fan of Hexen and Hexen 2. Is your composer planning to do remixes of some classic Hexen music like Wastelands/Plaza of the sun or Winnowing Hall? That'd be pretty awesome, even if it's just a new song incorporating bits of the older songs.

It's nice to see this mod progressing btw, after hearing about it for so long (my bro used to work on it with you guys)

Hey Bloodshot, glad you like the music! We won't be incorporating or remixing any older tracks into the project. We'll have some that might feel very old school, but they will be original.

What name did your brother go under?

You've done a great work of modelling and design, but... can you lower the difficulty just a little bit? I know, maybe I sound like I just want to complain, I really want to play this game, but it is far harder than the original Hexen! Those little fiends appearing from time to time are unnerving! I lost the count of how many times I died in the first two plazas!

If only there was a switch in some config file, for example, "little fiends spawn rate" or whatever, I would set it to 10 minutes or so. Plus, I didn't see any difficulty selection at the start of the game.

If you solve this issue in the final version, I wll sure download and play it.

Those pits come turned off by default. The player has to turn them on in order for them to start appearing. In the Options-->Game Menu turn off Hellion Pits and that will turn them off. Hopefully this will make your enjoyability greater :)

Uh-oh! I didn't understand what that option meant at all! So, my "little fiends" were "hellion pits".... :D

Anyway, thank you very much! I'm going to start the game again.

Remember guys, once you make this into an indie game... make sure you get permission from Raven Software and id Software to do so. Ok???

deadite4 Dec 17 2011 replied:

This will not really be an indie game in any commercial sense. It's a free game made by fans and always will be.

Also we'd have to be complete idiots if we hadn't had some communication with the IP owners even when just a mod for doom 3.

I remember BloodRayne over at Doom3World.org posting about how the team asked Raven Software for permission and got the go-ahead in the very early days of Hexen: Edge of Chaos.

With the release of the Doom 3 source-code, is this project going to go standalone? I'd imagine it would make sense, given that this seems to be a total conversion with nothing much left of the original Doom 3 content.

deadite4 Dec 4 2011 replied:

We've been looking into it since release. It looks like it's something we will be able to do, however it is going to take a fair amount of work to execute. We've currently pulled all tasks of our programmer to allow him to fully focus on getting the code, defs, and scripts all set up. Then our texture artist will need to fill in any holes we have where we pulled from Doom 3. There aren't many, but it's just a lot of little loose ends to tie up. Then we'll need to finish a player model as we currently pull the Doom 3 player model(this is the only model in the whole project from doom 3!). So yes we're attempting it, but it will take a serious undertaking!

Guys , I think what you've done here is quite impressive. You've taken an aging engine and turned it to your advantage , rendering picture perfect recreations of the original Hexen environments and creatures. Hexen fans like myself will be welled up with nostalgia. The movement feels satisfying and the weapons pack a punch. You've done a great job of including all of the original hexen inventory items - all the flasks and so on look identical to their old school counterparts , with the added benefit…
