Ghost Recon: Heroes Unleashed, the ruthlessly unforgiving tactical shooter experience. Unofficial expansion pack for Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon with 150+ maps, 250+ weapons, tons of new content, packed with ass-kicking realism and countless other gameplay improvements. Maybe it's time to revisit the King of tactical shooters!
Heroes Unleashed is an unofficial expansion pack for the squad-based military tactical first person shooter Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon, and before I introduce you to this mod (as in modification), please allow me to tell you a little bit about the game it is made for.
On Tuesday, November 13, 2001, a game developer in North Carolina's Research Triangle, not far from U.S. Army Special Forces installation Fort Bragg, released their opus magnum - Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon. The company, Red Storm Entertainment, had been founded five years prior, in 1996, by famed author Tom Clancy, best known for authentic and technically detailed military science thrillers, and his friend Doug Littlejohns, a highly decorated British Royal Navy Captain.
RSE gained major critical acclaim with their release of the first true tactical FPS - Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six - in 1998. In stark contrast to the ubiquitous run'n'gun shooters that had gone before, Rainbow Six rewarded tactics and planning over twitch reflexes, and its "one shot, one kill" introduced gamers to the concept of unforgiving realism. RSE's brainchild of realistic tactical first person shooters - a genre unheard of before Rainbow Six - was taken even further and ultimately reached its apotheosis three years later in Red Storm Entertainment's next groundbreaking release: Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon.
Expanding Rainbow Six' narrow counter terrorism CQC settings with open non-linear sandbox environments of military battlefields, and adding unequaled realism and streamlined realtime cooperative squad controls, RSE's Ghost Recon won multiple "Game of the Year" awards, topped many "Best Games of All Times" lists, and earned the ultimate accolade of being named "The Thinking Man's Shooter". Ghost Recon strikes a perfect balance between action game and realism simulator by side-stepping both the unrealistic hollywood-esque action approach of e.g. Call of Duty and Counter Strike games, as well as the overly cumbersome complexity of scale simulation minutiae employed by e.g. the Operation Flashpoint and ArmA series.
Focused squarely on realistic nonlinear tactical play, paired with its natural intuitive controls, unrivaled immersion, and vivid situational awareness, Ghost Recon facilitates and also unconditionally demands the undistracted use of tactical faculties, consequently adhering to Bushnell's theorem of being easy to learn and difficult to master. To this day, over a decade after its release, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon is widely considered to be the greatest tactical shooter ever made. While later games were published under the Tom Clancy and Ghost Recon brands, developed after RSE's buyout by French publisher Ubisoft, none ever came close to the uncompromising concept of the original.
Until today, no game developer has presented a single valid contender to Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon, the ruling King of tactical shooters.
Heroes Unleashed is my tribute to the greatest tactical shooter ever, the original Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon, released in 2001, developed by Red Storm Entertainment, and brought to the Mac by i5works and Aspyr. The mod aspires to honor makers and fans of this timeless masterpiece, to be a token of appreciation for all the people contributing to the undying and ever-expanding universe of classic Ghost Recon.
This unofficial expansion pack is the redux of content and ideas from a myriad of other Ghost Recon mods, and it aims to incorporate those elements into an ultimate collection, meticulously complemented by a host of significant enhancements and many novel features. Among its numerous additions, Heroes Unleashed contains 150+ different maps (available in all single and multiplayer game modes), provides over 100 game types (for SP and MP combined), and offers more than 250 authentic weapons to choose from. All add-ons feature a consistent professional finish and are painstakingly integrated and balanced.
The mod also tries to improve and refine many aspects of the game to further increase its perennial appeal and addictive replayability, while remaining true to Ghost Recon's unique character and concept. Heroes Unleashed strives to intensify Ghost Recon's realistic feel and immersive qualities, to make the game more challenging and emphasize the hallmark of Ghost Recon gameplay: realistic tactical play, rather than the asinine wanna-live-forever run'n'gun found in other shooters.
If you are looking for killing sprees or frag fests, move right along, there is nothing to see here. Just as the original game, this mod is about tactics and teamwork, and a focused mind and good strategy will serve you better than twitch reflexes and an itchy trigger finger. With the combination of all of its features, Heroes Unleashed seeks to create the optimum Ghost Recon experience to accommodate all kinds of players - casual gamer, clan regular, and league contestant alike.
I hope that Ghost Recon: Heroes Unleashed will provide you with many extra hours of fun in playing one of the best games ever devised.
Respectfully,
ApexMods

The latest update (v1.0.0b8) for my Ghost Recon: Heroes Unleashed mod is now available for download. Basically, this is just a small bugfix release that addresses some issues running the mod on a dedicated server. It also contains minor changes to the HUD and some adjustments for projectiles, e.g. frag grenades now have a slightly extended blast radius.

Damn i thought it was dead... really a great mod, thank you very much!
Excellent mod, only thing is that I shouldn't have to click 100+ times to select the weapon the weapon I want, it's too time consuming in quick play missions. It's hard just to find a rifle with a grenade launcher, a list or load out save system across all game-modes would be nice.
First of all, thanks! Glad you like the mod. :)
Going through the entire equipment selection surely requires a bit of patience, but regretfully the system is hard-coded in the game and cannot be changed through "soft" modding (there is no public access to the source code).
A load out save system would have to be implemented as a separate application, which is actually on my to-do list, but admittedly pretty far down that list, as there are still loads and loads of in-game features I'd rather implement first.
Your suggestion of a written list of available equipment kits for each soldier class sounds good (I think that's what you meant?), and is certainly doable short-term, so I'll try to put that in the next update.
Hopefully I'll get the next version ready a lot faster than this release. :)
I disagree with you.
LOL :)
You disagree with him? Come on, you have to admit the kit selection is a bit of a chore at times with over 1,000 equipment combinations to choose from. But I guess it's still better to have too much equipment than too little, right? :)
If he doesn't want to click 100+ times via quick play all he has to do is make a LAN Server and let that baby shuffle through missions at random.
Though he won't be able to really change the AI's equipment he'll be able to change his.
Besides, what's not to like about this mod and not the actual game engine itself. >:D
Time to play this again! Someone set up mp servers on gameranger. Btw, why was the rangefinder replaced by holster weapon? Are you faster or stealthier with weapon holstered?
Oh, ok. I see binoculars were added to kits. Would it be possible to mod kit selection so you pick primary gun separately from secondary stuff?
Sorry, that's hard-coded in the game. Cannot change it through "soft" modding without access to the source code.
Thanks, and please do! :)
Let me know how you like it.
