Hi everyone, this dev diary will talk about the bookmarks that will be introduced in beta 4.

Modern Warfare is set to be played between the year 2000 all the way to 2020. Since its initial development a lot has happened and the recent events in the Arab world will be represented in the mod. Let's take a look at the bookmarks that will feature in the mod and recap what exactly happened at that particular date.

Please note that in Beta 4 only the first bookmark will be focused on, later versions of the mod will focus on future bookmarks, do not expect to be able to fight the Syrian civil war with beta 4.

01.01.2000 -Y2K
This is the first bookmark of the mod starting in the year 2000 after the Y2K disaster, can you survive the computer driven chaos the world is about to be plunged into?

7.10.2001 - War On Terror

The war on terror began with the invasion of Afghanistan and continued until today. While the initial goal of the invasion was the capture of Osama Bin Laden the goal was later expanded to the establishment of a democratic state in Afghanistan with the removal of the Taliban regime. At the beginning of the game Afghanistan is divided between the Islamic state of Afghanistan (aka The Northern Alliance)  and the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (The Taliban).

19.03.2003 - Invasion of Iraq

The invasion of Iraq began on the 19th of March with coalition forces bombing runs in Baghdad and later a ground assault. The Iraq war was initiated with a stern insistence by the US president George W Bush that Iraq had developed weapons of mass destruction and thus posed a threat to the world. Despite the evidence provided by the US many Nato countries did not rush to join this war due to some serious doubt regarding these allegations. After the conquest Iraq you will have the option to form a new democratic state in Iraq.

07.08.2008 - South Ossetia War

The South Ossetia War was an armed conflict in August 2008 between Georgia on one side, and Russia and the separatist South Ossetia and Abkhazia on the other. The fighting started after a shelling of Georgian villages by the South Ossetian sepratists. After a swift responce by the Georgian army Russia intervened to help its ally South Ossetia.

18.09.2010 - The Arab Spring
While the Arab Spring is not a military conflict this bookmark is meant to jump start the players to the events that led to the overthrow of leaders across the Arab countries and especially in Tunisia where the Arab spring began with the self-immolation of Mohamed Bouazizi. The events were followed by the mass demonstrations that led to the downfall of Husni Mubarak the Egyptian president and later Muammar Gaddafi in Libya.

15.03.2011 - Syrian Civil War
The Syrian civil war began with peaceful demonstrations following the revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt. The protesters were met with an aggressive response from the regime led by president Bashar Al Assad. The conflict rages on until today with a long stalemate between government forces and various rebel groups.
These are the bookmarks to be featured in the mod, future updates to the mod will enhance each bookmark until all of them are playable.

So a quick question about the alliances, will they be full strength at the start of the game? In 2000 the free world (represented as NATO in this mod) was huge, and its even bigger now. It just seems like NATO plus US allies around the world are a bit much for China and/or Russia to handle early or even mid game. I suppose this could be balanced by a ridiculously high neutrality for NATO? But even this would disappear after 9/11. I don't envy your task, but I'm sure you'll do great.

That is not decided yet, I guess I will try a specific method and adjust it as I get feedback from players.

Right now the alliance will have all of its members up to the year 2000. Note that many of those members will not have the capacity to build any armies in this beta so that by itself should balance some stuff.

I am also looking at the script files to try and alter the behavior of these alliances to be defense alliances so that all members are called only when one of them is attacked and not attacking.

Estimates are an elusive concept, I would like to avoid giving those and just announce the date when I know work in nearly complete.

War is about politics, to disarm your enemy to enforce your will upon another. There has and always will be a justification for it, and the majority will believe it.

Nothing has to be moderately accurate, this is a mod for a game after all.

Extra sources, if you want pictures...Keep in mind that these are merely videos which I think can illustrate at least some of my opinions. Feel free to sift through to your heart's content. :-)

Military-today.com (ideal IFV for US forces, purchases have been made by Qatar, South Korea, United Arab Emirates, and some others so reverse engineering shouldn't be a problem, the only problem is the lobbying of Boeing, Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics to create a monopoly over the US military. There needs to be a threat, no matter how fictitious or real it may be, inflated spending and inflated costs of weapons help make the military industrial complex boom with mountains of green, and they want to keep it that way because no one wants an empty wallet)

"So little pains do the vulgar take in the investigation of truth, accepting readily the first story that comes to hand." - Thucydides

[Thus, on one hand, Thucydides was the first to describe international relations as anarchic and immoral. The "Melian dialogue" best exemplifies Thucydides' view that interstate politics lack regulation and justice. In the "Melian dialogue," he wrote that, in interstate relations, "the strong do what they have the power to do and the weak accept what they have to accept." For him, international relations allow the mighty do as they please and forfce the weak to suffer as they must. On the other hand, Thucydides illustrated the Cold War phenomenon of "polarization" among states, resulting from their strategic interaction.]

In other words, "might makes right". Perceived human rights do not play an important role in geopolitics.

Now I am terribly sorry if I may offend, this is your mod after all. However, perhaps maybe there can be more of a geo-centric perception of the world rather than a single hemisphere perception of it? I'm sorry, however everyone has their own propaganda. Also, I think that maybe putting some real world logistics in there can be fine? American military units operate by gasoline, which burns faster and thus reduces their operational range than if they were using diesel engines. This may be the reason why the 1991 Operation Desert Storm was called off early? If M1 Abrams tanks were using diesel engines, their operational range would increase nearly 4x before needing to refuel.

These logistic bottlenecks continued to persist until the NATO evacuation scheduled for this year (which need to have the bulk of their supplies pass through CSTO countries who are allied with Russia because they do not have clearance to pass through Iran, Pakistan, India to resupply their forces). Coalition forces experienced difficulties during the 2003 re-invasion of Iraq, aside from supply bottlenecks they also encountered lots of rough terrain with few roads. Naturally, tracked vehicles could pass through the country side with their strategic mobility unchecked. However, one Mechanized Infantry Division experienced a slow down on their march to Baghdad, the division was largely equipped with Stryker Apcs, which operate on gasoline and wheeled chassis (based off of the Canadian LAV III "Kodiak" which in turn based their design off of the Swiss Mowag Piranha along with many Asian and European countries, such as the amphibious BTR 90. The Stryker is manufactured in Ontario, Canada under General Dynamics Canada and repackaged to US forces as "Stryker").
