In this single player level for Half-Life 2, Gordon Freeman (the player) finds himself on the sea shore with a terrible hangover. He is surrounded by empty beer bottles a few Headcrab corpses and a bicycle. Does not remember anything about how he got there or what happened there and the night before. Sets off to find out and as usual gets into a bunch of “fun” activities along the way.

Hangover MOD needs your help - Recruiting a Focus Tester and an English Rewriter/Proofreader

Posted by on

Slowly but steadily Hangover arrived to a testable state, so I need some help before beta testing can start:

  1. Focus Tester with the following requirements:
    - is an experienced FPS gamer,
    - has the Orange Box,
    - can document his/her play-through by automatically/periodically taking screenshots with a free evaluation version of Fraps or can use any other similar program to capture a video of the play-through,
    - is able to answer a few questions after the play-through and can lucidly write down his/her thoughts about each gameplay area,
    - has about 90 minutes for this job (play-through + documenting + feedback will take about 90 minutes).
  2. English Rewriter/Proofreader with the following requirements:
    - his/her native language is English,
    - knows the Half Life universe,
    - likes to write and can write elaborately,
    - is around 20 or older,
    - does not mind that this task is unfortunately not about creative writing/storytelling now, but just rewriting my awfully written voice over lines (about 200 lines + some additional texts).

Since the last update I have been working on detailing the environment. Here is a shot from one of the areas:

I can help with the beta testing part, finding bugs is my strong point, I participated in the speedrun for HL2 Episode 1.

Great! I'll contact you when beta testing starts.

But before that (as I wrote in this news post) I need a focus tester to gather some feedback about the current gameplay to see if any major changes are required or it's already OK to step into beta stage.

It would also be great if the rewriting part could be done before beta.

I could help there.
Have started gaming with with Half Life one in 2002 and got experience with good and bad games.
I'm also a professional glitch tester ( Youtube.com ), all glitches found by me.
When I play with other people they hate my gameplay cuz I climb/jump/press everything I see to find some bugs and exploits. I have full version of fraps so I can record and a headset to comment gameplay. Also I have additional software for editing.

Oh, I apologize, I didn't conclude that my sentence, so I'll just do that now.

I also have been mapping (CoD) for 5+ years now. Gameplay and environment work are my two strong points, as you can see from a bunch of my posts and map pictures on my profile, so I can give as much help as possible.

I'd love to be a Focus Tester. I make it a point in finding glitches whenever I play a game, I just find that fun. I understand a lot about mapping as well now, so I can find potential areas for glitches (namely texture glitches and out of map glitches) easier. I have the capacity to write thorough evaluations and bug reports, as well. I don't have any formal bug hunting experience, but I would love to help you out.

I also wouldn't mind trying my hand at the script writing. I love to write and have been considering actually putting some stuff down on paper for a while now, this would be a great experience for me to try my hand at it. I can't guarantee that my job would be absolutely perfect, but if you don't mind giving me a shot, I'll do my best. I'm an 18 year old college student. I check my ModDB profile daily, so that's your best bet of contacting me. Would love to hear back from you.

It seams most people think focus testing and beta testing are the same or at least similar things. They are not!

In short beta testing is about finding bugs nearing the end of a game project while focus testing starts much earlier and it's main purpose is to gather information about the game by watching a focus tester play it and to get some more information after the play session is finished by doing an interview with the focus tester.

I goggled it for you - you can find some more info for example here:
Bioware.com
Videogametesterhub.com

So being precise and able to painstakingly search every inch of a map for possible glitches and gameplay exploits, etc. is a great ability for a beta tester but not necessarily good point for a focus tester.
The ideal focus tester would be somebody who can just simply play through a game and have as much fun as possible without being distracted by temporary or buggy parts still present. Somebody who represents the target audience as close as possible.

Do not miss understand me I am not rejecting you guys as possible focus testers just wanted to make this clear because knowing this you might not be interested any more.

That sounds easier, and more fun. I'd love to help either way.
