Ham and Jam is a teamplay orientated, first person WW2 mutliplayer game centred around the British and Commonwealth campaigns from 1939-45. Historically accurate missions coupled with careful balance between realistic and enjoyable gameplay makes Ham and Jam a unique experience.

Ham and Jam started out as an idea between it's two main developers as an alternative to the tired old "U.S./Russia vs. Germany, post June 6th 1944" formulae WW2 games seem to use. Fed-up with everything prior to D-Day being ignored, the North West Europe theatre and the lack of British, Commonwealth and Free Forces they decided to do something about it...

The goal was clear - to make a WW2 mod that featured all the "missing" bits of WW2 history, portray it in a historically accurate way but without detracting from the fun or playability by overdoing realism. In short the kind of game they and their friends would like to play. Rather than a deathmatch gameplay style, Ham and Jam is all about teamwork as were the real battles. Each map is set-out with objectives and as a team you must fight to complete them to win.

From the start, Ham and Jam has had an interesting development ethos. First of all, there is no real "team", only a few core "leaders" and everyone else is a contributor free to add whatever they like. There is no commitment to the mod full time - you can choose to work on it for a month, a week or simply donate a few textures and leave, it's entirely up to you. Also we follow a strict policy of "No Bullshots" - we will only post pictures of things that actually exist or are about to go into the game.

The mod is an on-going work-in-progress. We aim to release updates often rather than store them up for months and hope to have an open and productive dialog with our players. Ham and Jam is a hobby for us and something we do for fun and that's how we intend to keep the development process.

It’s been a while since the last update, so here’s a short and sweet “We’re still here!” update.

Firstly personal lives, jobs, holidays, etc. have caught up with the team. It’s been somewhat tough the last month getting things done as various people have been away and then just as one comes person comes back, another goes away somewhere!

We’ve also just started closed beta testing and the work required to get that set-up and running is nothing short of biblical. If you haven’t been emailed about the beta then don’t email us, we’ve picked who we want for the first small closed session. In time this will be expanded but at the moment we’ve got enough extra bodies to help out with what’s needed.

We’ve hit some pretty big bugs in the first few days, fixed a few, added some more, wallpapered over a few more and everyone settled down for the long haul of spotting map and model errors whilst major bugs are being fixed and testing when they are fixed. Feedback from tester has been great so far although some are finding it hard to shake of their DoD/CS experiences and find that Ham and Jam is very different in some respects to what they would expect from a Source game.

Two new maps are well under way, Archery and Arnhem and as promised here is the first sneak peak at the latter.

Arnhem Teaser

It’s created by Albatross and is the first real city map for Ham and Jam. It’s a somewhat spooky place with plenty of nooks and crannies to hide in to ambush people. It really pays to be with team mates and clear each building room by room before moving on.

Archery is also coming along nicely and is being created by our resident texture maker Spine. It’s his first Source engine map so he’s learning as he goes but he’s managed to create a corker of a map. Based around the Norwegian Commando raids it’s set in a snowy town with the objectives of a quick shock raid and features a great mix of long range and close quarters combat.

We're in need of a few team members to help get the mod flowing in certain areas as well

  • C++ Programmers
  • Weapon Animators (Max preferred)
  • Prop Modellers

If you have any of the above skills, have done mod work before and are free then please get in contact with the team at:

jobs@hamandjam.org

Hopefully we’ll have plenty to report on next month once we’re all more available and have had a chance to bug fix and react to the beta testers feedback.

Why another MP-mod? There's DoD, which looks pretty similar to this mod.

It's more meaty than DoD and DoDS to be blunt. Day of Defeat Source is now pretty much HL2DM set in supposedly WW2 settings.

We're setting them in realistic and authentic areas, with gameplay thats not fully arcade, yet not hyper-realism creating a fun blend than isnt mindless shooting and not frustrating to play.

Too true! DOD used to be so great back around Beta 2.1, but it got progressively worse. DODS is just horrible to play... I would say it seems more like TFC than HL2DM myself...

BTW GingerLord, did this mod start out as "Green Light" or am I getting confused with another mod?

Besides, DOD:S left out the UK entirely.

I just wrote DoD and everyone just saw DoD ... but actually my question was, 'Why another MP-mod?'.

They're placeholders for original content to come (some of which is already in since those are old pics).
