Reach actually had 25 SMAC stations defending. But even that couldn't hold back the Covenant. All the Covenant would need to do is slipspace jump right in front of the SMACs to get close enough.
The Covenant learned from Reach and remained outside it's firing range while sending boarding craft, craft too small to be targeted by the SMAC, in to blow them up and clear a hole straight to Earth.
Earth had 300 geosychronous platforms. That does not mean 300 MAC stations in orbit. Geosychronous means stationary orbit around the planet meaning they could have been ranging from a satelite to a shipyard.
Dude, right now in real life, we have pver 150 geosychronous platforms, or structures in space. Now imagine 500 years from now if we're still alive. We would have hundreds if not thousands.
Not to troll but the 300 geosync platforms are the orbital defense grid satellites. plus if you look around in hal two you see enough mac stations to assume they are 300 mac stations because i highly doubt UNSC would only cover one side of the planet with tons of macs
I only saw like 20 or less when you look out the window, but its been a while and oh well. I still don't think they would have had the resources to build 300 MAC stations around Earth in that time.
Yeah but the 300 Geosynchronous platforms (by the way they were all equip with MAC's and were not shipyards, and when I say macs I mean SMACs) were probably built 20 years prior (Or so) before the invasion of earth as they knew they were fighting a war they couldn't win conventionally and predicted that it was only a matter of time before the covenant found earth.
well lets look at this way when sgt johnson first became a recruit the grid was just a plan to build them which was long before 2525 when the covenant were first encountered. the invasion of earth was in 2552 . 50 years to build that many doesnt seem that impossible with the modern technology for that time.
the 50 years part comes from Sgt. Johnsons first enlistment to the point earth was invaded. While that may make the sgt seem really old to be a soldier you must take into account that its standard procedure to put the non esential crew (marines, cooks etc...) in cryo where they do not age at all for the duration of a slipspace jump which is longer for the UNSC than it is for the Covenant because of their less advanced technology. you could literally be a hundred years old and only be 50 if you spend enough time in cryo.
In halo 2 you learn that the covenant didnt bring more than one ship inside the atmosphere of earth. Even then they only needed to punch a hole large enough to get by the defenses.
The Covenant lost a lot of ships taking Earth because of the SMAC's and this can be proven by the low number of Covenant Loyalist Ships in battle above the Ark.
Wouldn't that make the planet useless? In that case glassing won't really be possible in the game as each UNSC world glassed is another the covenant can't exploit for resources.
Not in the beta as far as I've seen though it would be a cool ability on the rebel TEC titan which is built around a giant rail gun. I would imagine it to be able to fire some kind of planet destroying shell.
Question: Is it possible for the game to show the planet be set ablaze as the fleets either nuke, glass, or cleanse it? Not like the normal mushroom clouds that come from it but like a transitional one. Or is that beyond the games limit?
So, are you going to add new planet types at all? or is this just a texture for a terran planet or something? (you should steal a whole bunch from the stars mod)
Whenever I did this locally I created a new planet type for it, but whenever I committed it, playtesters started reporting game crashing bugs in which the Reach entity file was the source. It's likely easily resolvable, but planet textures have been put on the back burner in light of more pressing concerns (you see the new Prowler and Halcyons). The plan is to give certain very recognizable planets their own planet types, and to use other less recognizable planets to replace the random Terran textures (all these textures take up lots of space). I see everyone talk about Distant Stars, but hardly ever Stars. I've played it, and I like what they've done, although the Urbanized Planet thing would be a little ridiculous within the context of Halo.
queue massive covenant fleet

3. HOLY **** REACH :D
Also, before I forget again, Emberblaque was the one responsible for this awesome planet texture.
Are you boosting or lowering anything with game mechanics? Cause I can not imagine defending reach with only twenty MAC cannons.
I find this commentfunny, seeing as how Reach only had, like, 15 SMACS when the covies attacked it.
I know, but I doubt they will be as powerful in the game.
I have feeling that they won't nerf them, from cannon.
They one-shot Covenant ships. They're pretty damn powerful.

That is the part about halo 2-3 I don't get, Earth had 300, How the hell did the covenant even make it anywhere near earth.

A defense grid of shipyards, quick built lots of things to throw at them.

Ok 2552-2525=27. Get your maths right

Awesome, now let's glass it.
Que the pic of Covie ships glassing the planet ;)

In Rebellion it is possible. At least so I heard.

We actually have a glassing mechanic. You only really use it when you're sure you can't hold the planet and you want to **** over your opponent.
So, do units capture planets with the troops they store inside them, or is it like the normal game -where they just nuke it-
Glassed planets can be re-terraformed. Reach is an example of this, actually.
True, but it doesn't really answer my question, have the scraped the orbital bombardment feature for ground invasions?.
-Amendment- Replace the with they.
I just came back to say that I absolutely LOVE the planet's texture. You guys did one hell of a job!! Emberblaque, you're a master!
My reaction when I saw the thumbnail picture:
:O REACH! <3
*In Jun's voice 'Welcome to Reach...'
