Well Requiem supposedly didn't haven an external atmosphere and it was the only shield world in canon that has been shown to have an external shell over its surface.

Also Limitations to the Game engine. From what I have noticed with SGI, is that you cannot have a 'planet' with a mesh without this sphere around it. happened with our Supergate gravity well

You could implement a particle effect with a sphere mesh ever so slightly larger than the atmosphere, and attach the planet pipeline effect to it.
