MAC rounds make swiss cheese out of all Covenant ships regardless of remaining shield strength.

Indeed, however the plasma is a far more effective weapon.

From what i know not really. The plasma the Covenant use is magical seeking plasma that does not give a flying crap about physics.
Plasma is matter that has a combination of heat and/or lack of pressure making it one step higher than gas, meaning if you shot someone with plasma it would have a similar effect to shooting them with superheated steam, it would burn but not through armour.

"It would burn but not through armor"........Isn't the surface of the sun plasma? I'm pretty sure that would burn through any armor you can come up with :P

Well plasma does vary and as far as we know there is no temperature limit so plasma in and outside of the sun which is powered by constant fusion is hotter than what would be practical.

To give you a reference we use plasma in florescent lights, if you have ever accidentally (or otherwise) touched a florescent light bulb you most likely recoiled in pain but your arm did not burn off.

Plasma is simply material heated beyond a certain threshold but since it is similar to gas it does not have momentum and would just float around after a short distance. If it did have seeking magical unicorn powers like the Covenant gave it and it did not sort of float off after 20 meters or so yeah it would hurt, Alot.

TL;DR Plasma without magical homing powers is useless at long ranges.

If I remember correctly, one of the writers (or someone) for Halo mentioned that "Plasma" was just a catchphrase used by UNSC soldiers. It makes sense, given that Covenant weapons don't act like plasma.

The hard part is getting the shields to fail without being turned to a flaming wreck

Compressed by a magnetic core and guided by micro magnetic fields? Guided balls of plasma. Also, science fiction buddy, doesn't pay to judge it rigorously by modern day standards of science. Anyway, in canon Covvie plasma rapes all UNSC ships. The only way UNSC ships ever beat Covvies is if they have overwhelming force (very rare) or a huge situational advantage (even rarer). Hence, UNSC got its butt kicked in the war and Covvie plasma is more effective than MAC rounds.

what holymith said. plasma (which is guided by a magnetic field in the same basic way that you trace a line on a piece of paper) is universally better than projectiles pound-for-pound and shreds titaniam-A and to a lesser extent, Nanolaminate hull plating (covie armor) with both extreme heat and kinetic force.
