Paging all armchair generals - please wax your moustaches, don your monocles and, er, plump your armchairs. Microsoft appears to be working on a new instalment of a classic strategy game franchise, as per a job ad spotted by NeoGAF.
"Microsoft Studios is looking for a highly experienced senior games developer to help build and lead the team for a new AAA title within an established and well-loved strategy game franchise," it reads. The successful candidate's "primary responsibilities will be to recruit and lead the client-side engineering team, drive technical strategy for client development, manage the day-to-day engineering rhythm, and evaluate and recommend appropriate middleware and tools to accomplish our goals".

Microsoft has three strategy franchises that could fit the label "established and well-loved", by my reckoning. The most obvious is Age of Empires, created by now-dead Ensemble Studios - there hasn't been a peep on that front since 2011's free-to-play instalment Age of Empires Online, which is due to be closed down in July 2014.Ensemble is also the studio behind Halo Wars, one of the few well-regarded and successful console-native real-time strategy titles. I'm not sure I'd call it an "established" franchise, though - sales weren't spectacular. Phil Spencer praised the game's control scheme while expressing guarded enthusiasm for console strategy experiences in January.Last but not least, there's Viva Pinata, Rare's intensely sugary animal husbandry sim. The developer has ideas for how a new game might make use of Kinect, and Microsoft's head PR honcho Major Nelson has broached the subject on Reddit. I also can't help noticing that Rare retweeted our retrospective from last month. On the other hand, the job listing above is based in Redmond, rather than at Rare's HQ in Leicestershire, UK.Any frothy bits of speculation to share?

Hey 363Studios. My name is Conor and I have a youtube channel focused on PC modifications. My most popular video series is "Applaud the Mod" in which I highlight some of the best available mods that can be found. I've started a new video series dedicated to interesting discussions/rants where I talk about mods that I would have liked to have seen, that were not meant to be or were just damn out right removed by a certain huge conglomerate. This first episode in this new series is dedicated to Halo modding(in general), the fact that there was once a Halo mod for C&C: Generals called "Halogen" that was just destroyed by Microsoft because a certain Halo set RTS was coming to Xbox 360 at some point and the fact that Halo Wars 2 may be at this time a very possible Xbox ONE release in the very near future. I focus on the modification you guys are working so hard on, Halo-Evolutions and my thoughts on the mod as well as showing my viewers screens that you have provided above. Would like it a great deal if you could let me know what you and even the mod page viewers/readers opinions. Link - Youtube.com

If Microsoft decided to do with the previous Halo RTS mod "Halogen" we do have something else to show to you guy's. This is even bigger then both mods together.

This looks.. Very nice, especially those 3 new pictures, those 2 scorpions in the destroyed block look awesome, but I do have a question (Sorry if I've already asked, I don't remember) but will the flood be a faction on here? Also: How about Forerunner shield worlds? If you've ever played Halo Wars or Halo 4 (Which I'm sure you have) then you'll know what a shield world looks like, we could have four factions: UNSC, Covenant, Flood and Forerunners. Though there are no known vehicles for the Forerunners they are more of an air support faction so I guess they could be just a side faction non playable, as for the flood you can have models of vehicles that have flood bio-mass on it and driven by a flood infected covie (if covenant vehicle) or infected UNSC (if unsc vehicle) and shown in Halo 2 in one of the missions, flood are able to fly pelicans (At least thats what I saw) so they can have air units too. Sorry for the long comment, just really excited to see this come out!

I agree, personally I wish there had been more than just two different factions in halo wars

Me too, they did show that the Flood could've been a stable playable faction, they had 3 air units (if you count the spore cloud) lots of infantry units, and the Flood becomes smarter with every organism they consume so they could drive vehicles from their hosts memories on how to drive. Rebels could've been promising, the Forerunners, at the time, there were no known infantry units so it was basically just an air support faction. But now that the Prometheans are here, there could be a greater chance of the Forerunners being a faction on this mod, but they still don't have ground vehicles.
