Current Half-Life 2: Wars release version: beta 0.5

Like it?  Head over to our community and let us know!

Half-Life 2: Wars is a real-time strategy (RTS) modification set in the Half-Life universe. Although development is in its early stages, much has already been implemented (be sure to check our downloads section for the current release). Currently there is only singleplayer, but multiplayer is planned. There is thorough mapping documentation available on the forum for those who wish to make custom maps, which may be included in the mod.

Current features:  Singleplayer, three maps, play as Combine or Resistance, basebuilding, Zombie and Antlion NPCs, RTS-style navigation and HUD, map objectives, resource control points, unit production, Orange Box SDK, fog of war, abilities, tech tree, improved AI/navigation

Upcoming features: further improvements to AI, navigation, interface, and stability, multiplayer, more maps and content in general.

Requires Orange Box to play.  Orange Box SDK Base and HL2: Episode Two must be installed.

It's been five months since you last heard from us in July and we've been hard at work in the meantime. We're still working diligently towards our first true beta 1.0 release, but a lot has already changed since 0.5. A lot of the focus has been on making multiplayer work and improving the Half-Life 2 code to run better as an RTS online. The scripting language Python has been fully implemented, exposing much of the game code and allowing us to add units, buildings, and abilities through scripts rather than in C++.

Much has also been done to the game to improve latency issues, navigation, and AI, including a brand new NPC system that runs much more smoothly online and allows full control over how all of the units behave. HL2: Wars also now features a traditional RTS game lobby and team colors, which you can see in the screenshots below:

Focus over the coming months will slowly shift from proof of concept and engine optimization to actual gameplay. Both of our releases so far have not been intended to be seen as representative of the final HL2: Wars gameplay, but rather as proof of concept that we're turning HL2 into an RTS. The game is in the process of being fully redesigned to replace the lackluster gameplay, with the help of suggestions from our dedicated forum community.

So, what are you going to see from us in the next few months? We'll continue working on Beta 1.0, and keep you updated on that, and in the meantime we plan on releasing a small multiplayer demo. Nothing special, just to show off our game lobby, new NPC system, and multiplayer capabilities. That should be ready in the next month or two.

In the meantime, add us to your ModWatch if you haven't already and show your support by voting for us in this year's ModDB awards!  2009 is going to be a big year for Half-Life 2: Wars.

You should think about adding in more combine tech, ie: striders, dropships, gunships, helicopters, snipers etc.
Hero units for the rebels wouldn't be such a bad idea, they would be very tough but once they are dead, they are gone forever. Me and my friend were thinking up all kinds of cool stuff the hero units could do...

DR.KLINER USING LAMARR FOR EXAMPLE! GENIUS!

Combie tech is already being worked on. We have also tried striders already in some test battles and they work very well. I'd still also would like to show you this topic that i wrote from the forum in order to explain why they should be "Special Units" not "Heros"
"Taken from the Read First before suggesting ideas Thread"

Elite Units
Recently I have noticed their has been alot of posts around on Elite units/hero etc whatever you want to call them. To put it simply to call them a "Hero" would be inaccurate as if this unit died it should never come back which would make the game less realistic. For example if Gordon Freeman suddenly was killed by a crashing Dropship then that would be it, he would be dead and thats the end of it, it would also ruin any storyline in campaigns and whatnot. The only was to get around this would be creating "Elite units" like a highly trainned commando or a combine assasin which when they do die it would seem logical that they can be replaced by another, which in contrast you cant get 2 gordon freemans or 2 alex vances can you?
