As I said on teh description, it was going to be an empty, boring room with just a phone ring and a cool sequence. That's preserved but it's presented in a more interesting way ;)

The ray comes from way up there and goes down, to an area (a room) where the player was at. It's hard to explain in words but is cool visually.
In a few words: the purpose is telling the player "hey, go down, it's really awesome there".
