Grey’s life has been nothing but a struggle. A constant downward spiral, and it seems even reality has turned against him. Grey awakens to find that the world has gone quiet, the streets empty. You must find help. Explore the grim world Grey lives in a completely new and unique world, and find clues to his shattered past. Grey is a total conversion Half-Life 2 horror modification where the player must solve puzzles, fight to survive, and find out what is happening to the world around you. We have made a lot changes to the base Source engine and have added countless new mechanics in the mod such as the objective indicator, portable medkit, donator based extras, pickup animations, failed reloads, new picture based GUI elements and much, much more!
Textures, sounds and design ist totally from scratch. The programming ist very good. The scary atmosphere at the beginning goes down at the middle of the mod, because to much puzzles. But the main criticism ist the high level of difficulty. Health ist way to rare and the monsters were way too strong. It was frustrating and demotivating to die so many times. Please release a patch to fix the balancing. Overall it's still good with a lot of work. 7/10
This was relatively fun for a while, it seemed to take it's time and I had high hopes. Then the game got going and it went downhill.
The good parts of this mod are that the graphics are decent, the atmosphere for the most part is good, and I like the weapon animations.
The bad is that the level design is only ever average and at times absolutely terrible, only serving to confuse the player and lengthen the game rather than make it flow. Every time I saw a keypad I knew I'd have to backtrack half the level to find a hidden note or a scrawling on a wall to open it. I can't remember how many times I got stuck because I missed a door I had to smash open as if I was supposed to know that the door which looks exactly the same as every other was breakable. That's infuriating, not engaging.
The gameplay felt too much like an FPS to be scary. I always felt like I was having to 'game' the AI in order to kill them with the melee weapons because the ammo was so scarce. If you're going to have guns in a horror game, let me use them, otherwise don't bother.
Then the jumpscares - oh, the jumpscares. It works the first few times you do it and then it gets boring.
It's a nice attempt but I don't think it's executed very well.
this mod is a fantastic experience combining a whole new half life experience and easy to learn game mechanics and considerable playablity using the half life 2 engine it is a great mod for all horror survival fans out there
now heres the but
this mod after waiting so long for the development i dont think fully delivered what everyone expected
Music was a little bad overall but some tracks were nice
the cluttered controls were also difficult besides there easiness to learns
Melee weapons were useless
Some monster sounds weren't too good
Confusing map design
Maps were WAY too dark (particularly the forest)
The boss was not fun and too hard
Health was way too scarce
now First, I had played Nightmare House series and Cry of Fear before, so I will make a little comparison between these horror mods.
Grey has two story modes to complete.
Normal mode has nothing interesting to say. This is just a dumbed down version of the hardcore campaign.
I really want to skip the whole part if I could.
There are few good puzzles around, but there are also a lot of nonsense periods.
A path will always open behind you without any clues or sounds.
It's a very frustrating experience.
The Hardcore mode has a better design in every way, and you don't make the same mistakes again.
That's the spirit behind the Grey.
I am very interesting to play mistake series after I played Grey.
Grey has great props, weapon models and animations.
Levels are very beautiful too, but it feels more like NH2 than CoF.
The combat isn't fun because there are a lot of monsters are scripted.
Most of them guards a specific position.
The Hints tell you to search the side rooms and escape from the monsters.
That's not totally true in this case.
Most of them are staying in a tiny alley or a room.
You have to fight them back without a choice.
The rewards are usually useless in the hardcore mode.
Prepare to crash a hunderd of empty boxes and find a few batteries.
I had a fear of playing NH2 when it came out, sometimes not even wanting to continue; but this mod set a new standard for what I find scary. The creepy atmosphere complimented by the ambience and very creepy monsters gave this mod much for me to be scared of. the level design was brilliant, especially with the small details and the various props hanging on the walls, floors, and just about anywhere else.
While this mod was a bit short, the content it showcased made that detail negligible. It created an atmosphere where you did not want to go 'round that next corner or open that door for fearing what was behind it. WHile some plot elements were somewhat hard to find, it just involved some looking around. Health was not too hard to find, and my phobia of having too little ammo kept me using the melee weapons [for me, less than 3 clips of ammo is low]
Other than that, this is a very well done mod
