WARNING: It may take a very long time to start up a new game (that it looks like it must have crashed) because of the number of factions in play. I am working on improving startup time, but while that is still not fixed, I suggest starting a new game in windowed mode to allow you to do something else while it starts up. Once your new character is made, you can save it and restore full-screen mode -- starting a new game takes a long time, but loading an existing save is as quick as normal Mount and Blade.

Installation
If you have an old version -- delete it first! 3.0 will overwrite all old files as necessary, but it will leave a few behind that are no longer used.

3.0 comes in two versions: a self-extracting installer that auto-detects your warband directory and a .rar for power users who know what they're doing.

If you have the installer, just run it and follow the instructions.

If you have the .rar, extract it into your modules directory.

Gekokujo
Gekokujo is a mod for Mount and Blade Warband set in the Sengoku period of Japan. The name is a term often translated as "the low-ranked taking over from the high" and was chosen because it was a running theme during that era: Oda Nobunaga descended from a clan of deputies to the nominal governor of their province, but the Oda usurped them and toppled their neighbors; Toyotomi Hideyoshi began his career as a cook and sandal bearer and ended up the ruler of Japan; Tokugawa Ieyasu was an upstart who probably fabricated a claim of descent from the Minamoto clan--the only ones allowed to be granted the title of Shogun. As a player of Gekokujo, you will start from nothing and attempt to gain control of the entire country, making the title fitting.

A little note on the in-game names of equipment and NPCs: My priority is to make the mod intuitive for all players, not just historical enthusiasts, so gratuitous Japanese is avoided, unless the English equivalent is even more cumbersome or somehow less informative. You will also meet "Lord Tokugawa", not "Daimyo Tokugawa Ieyasu" -- in Native mount and blade, lords only had one name (although their given names, not their surnames or house names), and "Daimyo _" isn't accurate usage anyway, since it's not how anyone would have addressed them. The mod tries to be accurate with regards to the general conditions of the time, but deliberately ignores particulars as a design decision. "Lord Oda" represents Nobunaga, but isn't really him. Gekokujo is not a historical simulation, but not because I believe it detracts from gameplay or enjoyment--so although it won't be perfect, I am not going out of my way to flout history and accuracy.

Current Features
- New map of Japan with more than double the playable area of Native, from Kyushu in the south to Ezo (Hokkaido) in the north
- 32 towns (10 more than native!), 75 castles (28 more than native!!), and 164 villages (54 more than native!!!)
- New village, castle, town, tavern, and many other scenes- Historically-appropriate names for towns (Tokyo was still Edo, Osaka was still Sakai, and Fukuoka was still Hakata back then)
- New weapons, armor, trade goods, flags, and other details appropriate for the time and place
- Gunpowder weapons and gunpowder units
- New faces and hairs, including 6 base asian male and 4 base asian female faces
- 20 factions (19 samurai clans plus the Ikko-Ikki movement of monks, peasants, and samurai volunteers)
- Tested for stability and consistency so that it has, at minimum, the playability level of Native
- Town and castle recruitment (villages for ashigaru, towns and castles for samurai, temple fortresses for monks)
- Bodyguards for interior scenes (requires NPC companions and high-enough reknown or nobility)
- Tweaked startup scripts to increase variety in new games (such as the relationships of noble lords and ladies with each other)
- Integrated Freelancer mod (ask to serve a samurai lord as a direct retainer and participate in all their battles)
- Integrated Diplomacy mod (many, many features -- look them up separately)
- 22 npcs will full-fledged backstories
- Many, many more!

- Better warcries
- Localizations in many languages
- A religion system
- Parallel faction systems for merchants and bandits, meant to complement each other and the territorial lords
- More quests (with many based on the merchant, bandit, and religious factions)

This mod still has a long way to go, so I was pretty surprised that it got mentioned with the likes of Counterstrike, DOTA, and Natural Selection, among others. This is exciting news and it's a great motivator for me -- how can I let this mod's flaws remain while taking this kind of praise? I have to work extra hard to finish the patch, because I've got a lot to live up to.

Speaking of the patch, I have been neglecting talking about it here on ModDB. It's been in progress, but it is taking longer to finish than I would like. I've got a lot done, but there's still more to do. It is a 3.1 instead of a 4.0 because this patch is save-compatible. Even so, it adds a lot:

FINISHED:

  • Some lords with a wardrobe malfunction had them fixed
  • Ikko samurai recruitment cost is fixed
  • Giant arrow flight meshes have been fixed
  • Companions sent as emissaries no longer disappear (in fact, they should return)
  • Lord parties now tend to have higher tier troops
  • Thrust is re-enabled for spears on horseback
  • Yari now have overhead thrust rather than overhead swing (other polearms still have overhead swing)
  • Nanban and Yukinoshita armor now have additional modifier types
  • Fixed freelancer message spam when your lord is defeated while you are on vacation
  • Agents and Experienced Agents (ninjas) can be bodyguards in addition to companions
  • Increased morale from leadership, with additional morale bonuses from INT and CHA
  • OPTIONAL: increased party cost for samurai units (samurai take up 2 spots -- the 2nd spot is for off-screen servants)
  • Several minor dialogue touch-ups and typo fixes, including re-named menu options for clarity and consistency
  • Slightly improved bridge battle scene
  • Completely new wedding scene
  • Completely new productive enterprise scene
  • Added 2 new lord's hall scenes
  • Added a biography page in the Gekokujo Options of the camp menu
  • Smarter formation AI for more difficult battles (no more slow circling)
  • Improved sode (shoulder guard) mesh for high class armors
  • Fixed swarming by bandit groups (needs more testing)
  • Fixed bugs relating to imprisoning lords in neutral forts (needs more testing)
  • Sieges now have gates that the attackers must batter down during battles
  • Sieges should now have slightly more archers in vantage points
  • Sieges now have 2 wait times: normal and long (AI always chooses normal)
  • Long wait times for engineering-based sieges will automatically batter down the first gate
  • Long wait times for ninja-based sieges will lower gate hp from 60 to 40
  • Old siege style with no gates can be toggled (new siege style is default)
  • Miscellaneous castle siege scene fixes and improvements
  • Kyoto overhauled to make it a unique city (new streets, new castle, new arena)
  • Some villages have been moved to make the map have a slightly more even distribution
  • Integated world map HD textures by painbringer
  • Integrated animations by jacobhinds

IN PROGRESS:

  • Improved face textures for female characters
  • Procedurally-generated quests
  • Procedurally-generated encounters (REAL encounters, not just popups with choices)
  • (I say procedurally-generated rather than random because they take into account your progress)
  • Ability to work in town or a village for small amounts of money
  • Entertainers in inns to improve morale
  • Criminal activities (from pickpocketing to burglary to racketeering)
  • The amount of bandits that spawn is proportional to how many factions are on the map (more united = less chaos)
  • When Japan is united or nearly so, there will be random outbreaks of rebellion instead of a steady stream of bandits
  • AI should now choose between multiple melee weapons properly (instead of defaulting with the weakest as it often does)
  • Proper musket animations
  • Player gets a lord icon on the world map if they have enough troops and/or are a lord
  • Several minor bugfixes

UNDER CONSIDERATION:

  • Service businesses (ability to run your own inn, teahouse, or bathhouse)

I guess, there are 2 options, that front blade and back blade (maybe) you can switch it by pressing "X" on your keyboard or special key in control option, well.. i dunno the difference but it seems cool to have special features ( `・∀・´)

yeah.. i've used too, but it wasn't deal damage to enemy, i think better to use nagamaki. it suits for mount (`・∀・´)

Well, I've played since 2 month ago and being addicted.. thanks to the developer. but I've to say that the difference between Player (Me) and AI is really bothersome. Likely when you are in battle, im going to the front, there are about 5 enemy's men after me which my army still fighting there, its confusing why always me, and the difficult to stay alive when you just have a blade that can only resist 1 blade which the others striking too..

and how about change the black horse in main map, to the white horses like all lord has, rather than like Ronin, i want to be more like a lord..

_I know banners in feudal Japan look colorful, but not that type of colorful you're doing in the mod. Some banners look cheap with colors like highlight pen
_Also, armors are too colorful. Yes i know they're actually very colorful IRL, but something about the texture here makes them look like toy soldiers. Maybe you should change the texture to make them look more realistic?
_You should check out a submod called Gekkokujo-Shogun, they add some texture for armors from Shogun 2 to your mod, the Sode looks nice, the armor looks realistic
_The body form looks kinda thin, even when they wearing armors, they all looks like catwalk model lol
_And please, add more and more helmets, you know that's the koolest thing about samurai, their helmets are unique. Please add historical accurate helmet for each Great Lord, and for famous lords

3.1 has improved sode, but the update is not done because I just moved and haven't had a chance to put my desktop computer back together -- my laptop is so old I can't do much useful development work with it, unfortunately
