GMod is a Sandbox Modification. Using GMod you can pose ragdolls. This means can position people from HL2/CS/DoD and change their faces. A big comic book creating community has popped up around this feature. Using GMod you can build. Take props from HL2/CS/DoD and weld them together to make walls. Axis a wheel to it to create a working car. Rope some cans to the back. A big contraption creating community has popped up around GMod - creating such things as Rube Goldberg devices, catapults, cannons, bridges etc.. Using GMod you can make your own weapons. That's right, make your own weapons. Using Lua you can create a custom weapon to do just about anything. If you're new you can change simple things like rate of fire, models, sounds. If you're awesome the world is your oyster, mass changing guns, melon cannons, jetpacks. GMod gives you the freedom to do any of these things in single player or online with your friends.

Who'da thunk it? Garry's mod is the new CS.

While I'm sad that it'll no longer be free, it's good that new and inovative mods are being recognised by Valve, and their developers are being rewarded for thir efforts. Overall, it makes the Source modding community a better place.

Congrats, Gaz.

How dare he request a small sum of money in return for several hours of entertainment? This is an outrage! He should be spending all of his time working for free. You'd never see established companies like VALVe or EA trying to charge people for their products.

I'm disgusted.

I have a feeling that if any of you were in the position of garry, you would not turn down free money. Mods are built out of a love for modding, mods are intended to be free, and thats what garry intended too. He didnt make the mod with the desire to get money for it, but after it got so successful thats just where it went. I think that Valve (or any other game company) selling your product is the ultimate level of success for a mod, not only is it released, but it is so good and so successful that the company is willing to sell it. Like others have been saying, if you put hours and hours of work into a mod like garry did, and it ended up being this successful then you deserve the money. Personally I wont be purchasing it because I dont feel it is worth the money, I never had fun with garry's mod. The thing is, lots of people do have fun with it. So instead of blaming garry for making an incredibly good and popular mod, I say we all congratulate him for his awesome work.

Well, I hope this is an april fools joke...

I am sure that there are mods out there who have far surpassed what garry's done in such a small mod. Although, i mean, look over ath black mesa: source mod development... theyre not getting paid, neither is the Blue mesa mod (im in it). We cant sell our mods, because theyre total conversions of a previous game (HL and Blue shift).

Anyway, thats my opinion, but seriously...

notice the 3 letters "GPL" - that means that he cannot use a physics engine that is not open source. I.E. just about nothing.

Newtondynamics.com

But that's besides the point. No point of switching the entire mod to an outdated game.

I never enjoyed the game, but this decision kind of goes against the spirit of modding - you're doing it because you want to, and it's a hobby that gives you satisfaction, not a cash cow. Oh well. I won't be buying it anyway, so really I've got nothing to complain about :P

Nnow THAT sucks. mods are supposed to be free, what's the point of them otherwise. When I'd want to pay for something to play, I'd buy a real game, you know.
I respect Garry, but that's because he does all of this hard work for free. Good for him though, but I won't buy it.
Just my opinion.

Having your mod go retail is big! Congratulations garry!

@ The flamers:
It’s his mod, so he can do whatever he wants to do with it!
No one is forcing you to buy the next version. If you don’t want to buy it, then don’t! It’s as easy as that!

First of all $10 is worth paying for a game such as Gmod, there are many bargain bin games that just plain suck! Also, just like what grudgE has said, you don't have to buy the next version, you can forever player the older version, FREE!

What's wrong with paying Valve, it's their engine, their game Gmod is based on, their art. I say they deserve a piece o' the pie.

Good luck with the Garry's Game ;).

I must say congradulations to Mr. Newman for getting his mod like this. And unlike most games he is letting us play the older versions for free which are excellent. But he is doing alot of amazing things with this one so you gotta give it up to the guy for that you know.
I just hope my mod can get paid for.

While I'm against paying for mods (gary should just use the GPL Q3A engine & make his own game), the thing that really irks me is that what if Garry DIDN'T want to use steam, but say Vapour or his own website to sell it for $10? Would Valve of liked that or would they of said no thanks?

Didn't Garry steal content/coding/features from another similar mod? Is it legal to now profit off that?

More importantly, why havn't Valve signed up with *decent* mods like Dystopia, The Battlegrounds, and Natural Selection?

@sickre:
I don’t think he “stole” anything...
The only thing I can think of that you may be talking about is the code for the phys gun.
Gmod.garry.tv

As you can see, the person who made the original physgun has been properly credited on the GMod website.
Skew.telefragged.com (Original phys gun.)

If you have kept track of the development on the new version, you should be aware of that garry has made a new physgun code, which allows you to pick up NPC’s

I'm not too sure I'm fond of this. I don't own HL2, but have heard a lot about GMod. There is definitely a large appeal for this kind of thing, and I know people would pay for it. But is that right? I mean, GMod is basically an over glorified sandbox simulator. All it basically does is enable excess to tools similar to what a developer uses. You can pose models, place them, and much more, from what I understand. Hardly amazing stuff. There is even a standalone mod using the Quake engine that does the same thing.

But is that really worth money? I mean, I could easily download a free modeling program, import the models, and pose them that way. Is it because it's easy to use and allows access to things inside of a game that you normally wouldn't be able to manipulate? I don't know. I haven't touched the mod, so I'm speculating. I really see no need to pay for something as "simple" as that. That's not really what I think of when it comes to a game or mod, it's more like a quirky developement tool. It's also something I'm not interested in.

It's not my right to say, but color me unimpressed. Unless there is some major enhancement or revolutionary gameplay tucked into this "model poser", this seems like a money grabbing venture. Obviously, when you have a mod this popular, you sometimes think of or see dollar signs in the equation. I just know this isn't something I'd pay money for, not even <$1.

I said I was mostly speculating. Also, I should correct myself when I said, "This isn't what I think of when it comes to a mod or game." I meant to say "a mod that becomes a full game." As a mod, it sounds appealing. As a standalone product? Not so much. Compare GMod to a similar release such as Gunman Chronicles or even Counter-Strike(which I'm not a huge fan of IMHO), and that's still more worthy of a purchase to me than a sandbox mod.
