A detailed info about Republic's army formations in the mod

Hello guys,

We have been asked a lot about units number and formations, so I decided to make this article to explane it. I hope everything will be more clear after that :)

So, as you know, we want to base our mod on SW canon, so the armies in the mod must be organized as canon as possible. Of course it's not 100 % possible, so some squads are made less realistic in order to achieve better balance and game performance.

Grand Army of the Republic


Infantry

Ranks of clone troopers, from lowest to highest (Only the ranks available in the mod are included) :

  • Trooper — The lowest rank in the clone forces
  • Sergeant — In command of a squad
  • Lieutenant — In command of a platoon
  • Captain — In command of a company
  • Major—In command of a battalion(other function in the mod)
  • Senior Commander — The second highest rank attainable by the clone forces. In command of a brigade or legion(other function in the mod)
  • Marshal Commander — The highest rank a clone soldier could attain. Each marshal commander is in command of a corps(other function in the mod)

We won't discuss jedi ranks and their role as they won't affect the mod in any way


Regular operational units of GAR (from smallest to biggest) :

  • Squad(in the mod) - 8 troopers led by a sergeant (9 individual units)
  • Platoon(in the mod) —4 squads led by a lieutenant (36 individual units - 30 troopers, 1 medic, 4 sergeants, 1 lieutenant)
  • Company(the biggest formation in the mod) —4 platoons led by a captain (144 individual units - 107 Clone Troopers, 8 RL, 8 Z6, 4 Medics 12 CT Sergeants 4 CT Lieutenant and 1 CT Captain)

Special operational units of GAR (not confirmed as canon, made for the mod only)

  • Sniper team - 1 sniper and 1 sniper spotter (2 individual units)
  • Infantry Reconnaissance squad - 4 ARF troopers (4 individual units)
  • Infantry Anti-armour squad - 4 rocket launcher troopers, 4 regular troopers and 1 sergeant (9 individual units)
  • Combat Engineer squad - 6 clone engineers, 2 regular troopers, 2 astromech droids and 1 sergeant (11 individual units)
  • Combat Medical squad - 4 clone medics, 4 regular troopers and 1 sergeant (9 individual units)
  • Flamethrower Squad - 6 Flamethrower clone troopers, 2 regular troopers and 1 sergeant (9 individual units)
  • Light infantry support platoon - 4 EWEB teams, 2 Z6 troopers, 4 Mortar teams, 5 regular troopers, 2 sergeants and 1 lieutenant (18 individual units)
  • Jetpack platoon - 30 Jetpack troopers, 1 Jetpack Medic, 4 Jetpack sergeants and 1 Jetpack lieutenant (36 individual units)
  • Republic commando squad - 4 republic commandos (4 individual units)
  • Major Headquarters team (only idea, we may not include it in the mod)- 5 regular troopers, 1 engineer, 1 medic, 1 ARF troopers, 1 sergeant, 1 major (10 individual units)
  • Senior Commander Headquarters team (only idea, we may not include it in the mod)- 7 regular troopers, 1 medic, 2 ARF troopers, 2 engineers, 1 sergeant, 1 Senior Commander (15 individual units)

Light Vehicles formations (not confirmed as canon, made for the mod only)

  • Light mobile support squadron - 3 Infantry support platforms (ISP) (3 individual units)
  • Mobile Reconnaissance squadron - 4 Biker Advanced Recon Commando (BARC) speeder troopers (4 individual units)
  • Light assault squadron - 6 All Terrain Recon Transports (AT-RT) (6 individual units)
  • Light armored squadron - 4 All Terrain Personal Transports (AT-PT) (4 individual units)

Medium Vehicles formations (not confirmed as canon, made for the mod only)

  • Medium tank squadron - 2 TX-130 Sabertank (2 individual units)
  • Medium assault squadron - 3 All Terrain Attack Pod (AT-AP) (3 individual units)
  • Medium armoured experimental squadron - 3 All Terrain Experimental Transport (AT-XT) (3 individual units)

Heavy Vehicles formations (not confirmed as canon, made for the mod only)

  • Heavy tank squadron - 1 All Terrain Tactical Enforcer (AT-TE) and 2 AT-RT for escort (3 individual unit)
  • Heavy support squadron - 2 Unstable Terrain Artillery Transports (UT-AT) (2 individual units)
  • Heavy transport squadron - 1 All Terrain Open Transport (AT-OT) (1 individual unit)
  • Heavy assault squadron - 1 Juggernaut A5 or Juggernaut A6, depending of the current tech level (1 individual unit)

Artillery formations (not confirmed as canon, made for the mod only)

  • Mobile artillery squadron - 2 RX-200 Falchion-class assault tanks (2 individual units)
  • Artillery battery - 3 AV-7 Antivehicle Cannons, 3 Cannon spotters, 3 regular troopers, 1 astromech droid and 1 artillery commander (11 individual units)
  • Heavy artillery battery - 1 Self-Propelled Heavy Artillery Turbolaser (SPHA-T), clone escort - 1 squad (11 individual unit)

Air formations (not confirmed as canon, made for the mod only)

  • Air infantry support squadron - 1 Low Altitude Assault Transport/infantry (LAAT/i) (1 individual unit)
  • Air diversion squadron - 1 Low Altitude Assault Transport/stealth (1 individual unit)
  • Air escort squadron - 3 V-19 Torrent starfighters (3 individual unit)
  • Air assault - reconnaissance squadron - 3 ARC-170 starfighters (3 individual unit)
  • Air assault squadron - 3 Clone Z-95 starfighter (3 individual unit)
  • Bomber squadron - 3 BTL-B Y-wing starfighters (3 individual unit)



Of course this list isn't final and it's subject to changes.

I love the fact that you are doing individual troops, but at the end of the day that creates a certain amount of lag due to system that is working with all those units. my advice is to tone down the number of troops in the company or add different units like for example if you have a company, have it land not just normal troops and medics, but add snipers, z-6 troopers, rocket troopers,engineers and so on and so forth. But you main problem with adding individual troops is landing time. So unless you find a way to speed up a units landing time, I won't be wasting time waiting for troops to land while the enemy comes and kills my troops one at a time

The idea of having a full company in the current battle is that you don't need more than 1, max 2 of them, all you need is support squads and vehicles. And the company will take a lot of unit limit and will cost enough so the player can't spam them in single battle.
Currently the company lands in about 4 minutes real time, I know it's a lot but I have some ideas how to reduce the landing time. It won't be left that much.

Our idea is the main operation unit to be the platoon, as it's the perfect size for most of the tasks where you will need regular infantry. And this leaves open space for the special squads. They will be lost in the crowd if they are part of a company and won't be used efectivly, as they are not for a mass firefight like the regular clones. E.g. the sniper team. The spotter can reveal the map at the end of the sniper's range of fire, about twice the view range of that unit, and about twice of the fire and view ranges of all other infantry units. So it's a huge advantage on enemy units, even heroes. But you have to controll it, so in a mass group, you can't use the sniper different that line infantry and this is pointless

Hoping you'll make some really good infantry maps.
One's that will restrict the usage of heavy armor.

Also see if you can add areas with cover for the infantry.
What would be cool is if you could make something like garrison able cover, that will show the infantry taking cover and shooting. Which will reduce how much damage they would normally take. I dunno if that's possible for this though.

Yes, it is possible to make such zones, actually. I'm not sure about the covers that can show the infantry, but at least we are going ot add some bunkers and other kind of covers.
And we are planing infantry only maps and infantry only zones on the others, especially in city maps

It is great but i dont understand 2 things. First marshal commanders like Bly will be individuals and they can send appart their corps in other planets. And last in the company formation will be a normal captain or a specific for example 501st company have Rex.

501st was a legion in the Clone Wars.

And yeah, I would strongly advise against individual clones. That will lag as hell. The smallest selectable unit (non special) should be a squad.

Every rank higher than captain will be separate unit, not part of a formation.
We haven't decided yet if Rex will be separate unit or the captain of the Torrent company

Cool! I would say he shouldn't be separate, but I fear that a lot of TCW fanboys would get butthurt that way.

Will The Muunilinst 10, led by Captain Fordo, be in the mod?
IMHO they were the most bad-*** thing that came out of the Clone Wars after Durge and Grievous (prior to getting choked by Windu).

About Fordo, he isn't in our plans, as there were several requests, we may reconsider about him for v2 or v3

Well, whenever you decide to include them you won't be needing new models or textures because they wore regular Phase 1 and 2 armor. Fordo had a Clone Assassin helmet in Phase 2, though.

How come? They look like regular Clone Officers (the blue ones are Lieutenants and Fordo's red because he's a Captain). They only wore pauldrons and kamas in Phase 1 but that's not necessary.

They should be differentiated from other clones only by their abilities.

Details like the cama and the pauldron are absolutely obligatory for us. And Fordo wasn't the only one with extra gear.
Also they had some special weapons that we need to create

It won't lag, unless your computer is prehistoric. I haven't experienced lag on my computer even with a full battalion (576 individual units) landed and I already had other units on the map.
Try other mods with individual units and you'll see

Absolutely 100% for individual units like this, completely changes gameplay and micromanagement and in my opion improves upon it drastically. So happy to see this mod growing still.

Check again the units list. And here you can't see non of the special units like the 104th or the 501st. Just wait for them a little more

Looks awesome! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE if you use voice overs/actors do NOT use the so annoying droid voices from the third film and pretty much all cartoon series. Its so annoying and no one would ever make droids like that even in Star Wars. They worked in company, in formations and organized. Not stupid, forgetful and clumsy like made out to be. I think if used it will make the mod so annoying and people will always play as the Republic just to kill and shut them up. Cant wait for this mod!!

Well, we will choose very carefully all voices and taunts, as this really can ruin everything. I won't mention other mods, we all know were you can play better without the sounds from the clones

i hope if you make the formation for the CIS than the droids are individual units that were cool because you can play the cis with more strategie instead of rush my personal opinnion

Some droids are going to be individual, but some of them will be in squads as their numbers will be too high

hey im a big fan of this mod and i got a question, will the clone squads (companies, squads, engineer squads all of the above listed) will they be in skirmish and GC or just GC because you only have so much room of units in the barracks. and 1 more thing, will all the above (clone squads, compaines etc) just be in white or will they have their legion, battalion colors and markings
(exp- 212th sniper team, 327th jetpack company) thank you if you answer, keep up the awesomeness!!!

1) All will be available in GC and it's very possible that all of them will be in skirmish :)

2) Some special units will have some of the special companies, e.g. 212th will have sniper team, 501st will have jetpacks and etc.

are you going to release any pics of the clone engineer and will all the clones phase 1/phase 2 from the progress report, Regular, 5th security, 182nd, etc. be in skirmish or is that to many different battaions, legion?

Not all of them will be in skirmish, as they are too much.
The engineer in phase 1 won't have special armour, phase 2 you can see in the pictures section :)

i also had a qeustion, in the clone wars we dont see the sergants and liutenients with the green or blue markings, why areyou guys putting those guys in it just makes them look like 501st or green company, just saying

In phase 1 at tech 1 the clones will be in AOTC style, with colour armour for the senior troopers, for later tech the senior will have the unit colour on their armour like the rest of the troopers

what happens at tech 2? i understand this only works on regulars and not 212th, 501st phase 1 clone etc right?... sorry i dont know my clones :(

On tech 2 regular clones will keep the colours, special units like 212th and etc. will have white regular clones and unit colored seniors
