My team, jkberna and Djodar, my various esteemed collaborators such as Siber and Avatar II of the HW@ mod, and myself are proud to bring you the Galactic Council Mod, a bold project intended to show you just what really was behind those hyperspace gates at the end of the original Homeworld. So far there are three totally new races on the drawing board-- two totally original new races-- the Czalkir and the DR1, and another based off of actual Relic concept art that has come to be called the Lizaanj.

"ventilation systems at the fore of the main Hadron Collider that route the heat from the turret out safely into space. Thus, the plumes of smoke you see."

You are one crazy guy... the detail you put in things.

Well, maybe, but I come up with a lot of it as I go.

I meant no offense, and I have discussed these things with Doci. This mod shows great promise and I support it all the way, but there are a few tiny errors that he has made when describing the operation of certain technologies. First of all, a Hadron Collider is used to accelerate particles in order to collide and conduct experiments on said particles. The LHC, which is an actual real-world hadron collider, to my knowledge could never be adapted as a directed energy weapon like the ion cannon of the homeworld universe. Secondly, it entirely makes sense that the ion cannons would have to vent in order to prevent overheating, but plumes of smoke cannot exist in the zero oxygen vacuum of space. If anything is escaping from the ship it would have to be heat. Once again I would like to say that my intention is not to insult the creators of this mod, but to offer my opinion in order to help them create something of fantastic quality in all areas, especially the depth and detail behind what they create.

Well, firstly, let me say no offense taken. But let me see if I can explain myself a bit better. The Hadron Collider isn't a weapon of the ship; it's the main energy source; it provides the antimatter necessary for controlled matter/antimatter reactions and for use in the positron weapons. The reason I said the vents were at it's fore is because the entire rear cylindrical part is the ship's particle accelerator (with added systems like the engines and such), and, well, the vents are in front of that. As for the plumes, it may not make perfect sense, but there is ingame precedent with the Hiigaran Ion Cannon Frigate. So, yeah, hopefully sufficient explanation/justification.

Description

As described within Homeworld lore, the main limiting factor governing the length of time an Ion Cannon can be fired continuously is heat buildup within the cannon itself. The Czalkir Destroyer's primary Ion Cannon turret can sustain an ion beam indefinitely, thanks in part to ventilation systems at the fore of the main Hadron Collider that route the heat from the turret out safely into space. Thus, the plumes of smoke you see.
