Freeworlds: Tides of War is a fan built Star Wars total conversion mod for Digital Anvil's Freelancer game that was released several years ago. When fans began to make mods for Freelancer, one of the many things people were keen on seeing was a Freelancer mod based on the Star Wars universe developed by George Lucas. Freeworlds and Tides of War were the answer to this outcry. The development team of both mods have now joined forces to create an epic new Star Wars TC, Freeworlds: Tides of War.

A death sequence is a series of pre-planned effects that cause a vessel to destroy itself in a certain way. This article contains information about the latest developments in this area of FW:ToW.

For quite some time, I have wanted to use the lovely wreck models that the First Strike development team gave to us. I attempted to place them in a death sequence before, but I just couldn't get them to work in the Freelancer engine. Today, on a whim, I reattempted the task and got the result I was after.

Now that the difficult part is done, I am looking for feedback on the different sequences I made up. Let me know what you want to see - like more/less debris, more/less fire/smoke etc. - and if you have any sources for me to use to develop these sequences. And, the first sequence, I used the small debris barrels as placeholders. They can be changed to anything, so don't get hung up on those :)

Here is the latest video of the WIP death sequences.

As always, any questions, suggestions or comments are welcomed!

The last one, is just perfect, also reduce the time between the ships destruction and the wreck is destroyed, it floats for too long on space imo.

Awesome work!

those looks awesome!
but i would add this explosions to capital ships:

if it was done for galaxies then it can be done for freelancer :D
it looks better in my opinion. and those explosions from your video are awesome too but only with fighters.

Oh, that was a very nice find. I'll see what I can do about the capitals. I wonder if we could get some of those debris pieces from Galaxies to use in Freelancer...hmmm.

Keep the ideas coming, everyone :)

in galaxies there are cool animations for the destruction of imperial star destroyers and some corvetes
maybe you could find a few there for sure ;)
also one thing that i would add for debris is fire
and for capitals i would add small fires in diferent places that gets bigger and random explosions
maybe the same with fighters it could very look nice if its on fire for 30secs after the explosion

here's a lil more footage from that galaxies mod

How about explosion, then wreck. Period. Just explode and leave a wreck behind. Does everything need to explode?

Ah and what about Caps? A Destroyer wreck would be awesome...

Problem with wrecks that live forever is that they're very heavy server side. Anyway, we could definitly try to add capital ships wrecks that remain until every player has left the area, as we won't encounter so many capital ships. Good idea!

that's why i say that there must be big explosions and some debris and then some explosions and fire after the big explosion the debris dissapears and that's all

Yeah, right didn't think about that. Nevermind then
But capitals, yes, it would be more than awesome to see and burning capitals drifting around after they've been destroyed. Not all of them, but there could be a chance that a cap becomes a wreck and stays in the area 'till the fight is over. Just like that Prison Ship in one of the first mission of the vanilla FL.

Btw... I don't have the impression that there's much talking going on in your forums. Is it worth registering or would it suffice to write comments on moddb?

There is a lot going on the forums, actually. Your call whether or not you register though.
