FRONTIERS is a conversion of HL2DM that offers the immersive experience of a migrant's journey into Europe from Africa.

In carefully remodeled conflict zones and migration hotspots (parts of our team went to the actual locations for research) , the players compete in the dangerous struggle of refugees and borderguards. It is a multiplayer game for up to 16 players, where one party, that is mainly unarmed, is trying to either cross a specific area (border) or escape a raid situation. The other party, mostly security and military forces, can use all necessary force to prevent this. Weapons vary depend on the local conflict situation with the guard side always changing identity. After a specific amount of succesfull crossing, the refugees are advancing a step towards Europe. Guards get promoted for the succesfull arrest of refugees, kills are never being rewarded. In some levels, they might lead to a loss of points.

This is going to sound soft, but as a European I find this unbelievably offensive.

So, ah, I tried this mod today during the playdate (I actually skipped some class today just for it, but don't tell anyone, shh..) and I'm going to say that, even though whatever the developers were trying to come up with is a somewhat-serious issue for everyone to be aware of, this shouldn't be intended for public use.

While people can have some fun with the main "tag" gameplay, the whole situation is already a huge target for racist and violent jokes alike when thrown at the general multiplayer-games public. For instance, the board patrol is supposed to "peacefully" catch the immigrants by arresting them, but someone over the dev team thought it would be a good idea to add a series weapons for the "police" officers. Throw this concept of "tag" play along with unnecessary weaponry and you've got yourself a recipee for disaster. There's absolute 0 penalty towards opening fire on the "unarmed" immigrants, so you've got yourself a satire of the situation where people go around shooting players while laughing uncrontrollably due to the racist and inconspicuous nature of the violence itself.

While the whole situation is very comic for me (Yes I'm going to hell) and others, I do not believe that this is what the developers were aiming for when they made this mod. This is supposed to be a serious work but I can't take it seriously due to the way it was presented to me.

Now, I would point out all the flaws, glitches and issues I had with it but I'm afraid that these problems do not affect the message behind it, which is about informing people about the whole situation of the illegal immigration in Europe. While some might have a good, short time with this game, they at least learned something.

Summarizing: This shouldn't be played by you, or me. It should be played by students and people studying the whole situation, because the main reason behind it is informing people.

Hi macacos,

Thanks for ur feedback.

Why are there weapons? That is a valid question, and we have been asked it quite a bit. The reason is that our research showed that those killings ARE happening, and we don't intend to patronize the players by preventing them from using those weapons. At the end it is everybody's own decision, just as it is in the real situation at the borders.
(Maybe a game is just like any other situation - it becomes what people make of it)

Usage of weapons however, will punish the whole team by giving them less points on their next arrests.

Our own observations on how the game is played, plus the valuable feedback we got, including yours, led us to make some re-arrangements in the gameplay. So a patch is coming up, and we hope you follow the process.

If you want to point out those "flaws, glitches and issues", you are really welcome to do so on our mail adress project.frontiers@gmail.com or our feedback form (feedback.frontiers-game.com)

I agree, it feels very politically driven. Unfortunately, it is not a fun game that offers alot of options. It reminds me of the old Conkers Bad Fur Day multiplayer mini game where illegal immigrants run for the escape point to be driven off into safety and past the soldiers.

Hilarious idea, I like it!
Watching this serious issue turned into a multiplayer game using the source engine looks really funny no matter how you look at it.

Totally mod of the year potential here. :D

Very cool and interesting mod! There are not many mods with a serious topic like that. Very brave to do so. Nice maps with lots of details to discover!
