It's not that I'm complaining (I always wondered what's so complex about turret moving left-right), it's just that this is not canon.
That doesn't mean it's bad (because everything that's canon isn't always good - look at Jar Jar, he's canon), on the contrary, this is very cool (well, not for the CIS :P).

Maybe it couldn't rotate the main turret because of issues with balance? After all the gun doesn't look small at all and having it mostly on one side might flip the whole vehicle.

Maybe, but is it hard then to put anti-weight on the other side of the turret (like a derrick)?
The only reason I could think of is because SPHAs are tall and their turrets are long, so when an SPHA moves it's turret, the surprised LAAT that is passing by can accidentaly hit the turret.

I'm pretty sure that any gunship pilot would be smart enough to fly either far above or to the sides of a giant (moving) artillery cannon. Kinda just general logic. Oh and evgenidb is correct, I believe. Walkers, with all their awesome abilities, have balance issues. Realistically, it would be easy to fix such a problem, by making the walker wider and bulkier. As this is Star Wars, the designers obviously wanted aesthetics over realism.

You are probably right about that gunship issue but I still don't believe that the balance of the turret would be the problem (like I've said, you just put weight on the other side of the turret, like a crane).

If the SPHA-T could not rotate the turret, it would be useless at EAW and I do not see because it can not rotate. There are descriptions from SW guides which they are pure theory.

You know I don't think I've ever seen one use outside of killing Cores ships (in the movies, books, games) weird, I mean they have to have another purpose then shooting down Core ships. example melting a hole in a huge main gate so troops can move through, destroying factories from a distance

It's an artillery unit, used for every purpose that artillery is for (bombardment mainly, pretty sure I've read they can shoot small bursts as well, not just a beam). That's what they actually do. In the game, I'm assuming they're just a mid-range beam weapon. These are not really shown/mentioned many places other than EPII, especially since they got replaced in the Clone Wars series.

Somebody asked about the SPHA-T. The model in the mod is very complete, it walks with a correct sound animation, it fires and it has a death animation.
