First Strike is a Star Wars total conversion modification for Battlefield 2142. The goal of First Strike is to totally immerse the players into the amazing universe of Star Wars by presenting the most accurate representations of famous Star Wars locales, weapons, and characters, and combining them with exciting, fast paced gameplay and features new to the Battlefield scene. Within this mod you'll find yourself as a soldier of the Galactic Empire or as a freedom fighter for the Rebel Alliance. You'll fight across lovingly detailed recreations of various Star Wars locations with a wide array of weapons and vehicles.

With the Rebel Alliance growing stronger every day and the Empire spread thin as it is, it's no longer a battle of technological might, but simply a matter of who strikes first...

Features include:

  • Famous Star Wars battles
  • An extremely authentic atmosphere
  • Dozens of Star Wars weapons, vehicles, and soldiers
  • Space battles!
  • Online multiplayer for up to 64 people
  • Co-op & Singleplayer Bot support on a growing number of maps

Greetings Troopers!

For those that don't know, First Strike is being overhauled to change it into a singleplayer focused modification for Battlefield 2142. When EA dropped support for BF2142 this past summer it killed the multiplayer capability of the game. Player counts on the servers were already dropping before this happened, and with only a few devs left working on the mod, and with the fact that the Battle of Hoth map was planned to be the final release anyway, it was decided to cease development and join forces with the Star Wars: Battlecry team to continue development on the Unreal 4 Engine on a new free stand alone Star Wars themed game.

Even though the intended vision for Hoth was never realized in First Strike, there will be a simpler version of Hoth released with singleplayer support that will allow gameplay with iconic Hoth vehicles that include Snowspeeders, trench defense turrets, Speederbikes and the much anticipated AT-AT Walker. To this end the Hoth Outpost map from the First Strike Extended (FSX) mod is being updated.

Outpost Hoth has all the basic components of the iconic Hoth map with a small base to launch the Snowspeeders from, a trench system to defend, and a Power Generator to protect. The map is getting an update with a snow weather effect, the addition of the beta AT-AT Walker and changing some gamemodes to be dogfighting focused.

Dogfight mode allows the combat to focus solely on an aerial dogfight, which has been set up in some other maps and it's very popular with players. The big difference between this and space maps is that it takes much less time to get into the action, and it adds a whole new level of excitement to gameplay with bots. The intensity is maximized with the focus of the bots being in the sky, there are no flags to capture, it is just a case of kill more of the enemy to win. To add some variety there is the classic Snowspeeder versus TIE Fighter dogfight mode and a more challenging gamemode teaming Snowspeeders and X-Wings versus TIE Fighters and Interceptors.

The AT-AT Walker also makes it's debut here having only seeing limited action previously in an earlier publicly released Battle of Hoth map Beta. As a result it has never been fully tested in gameplay, and though solutions to implement some form of Snowspeeder tow cable through Python were considered, none ever made it to the development stage, so that aspect cannot be included. Yes, there are some balancing issues in the map, but it is presented to showcase the work that has gone in to developing the Hoth vehicles.

Future versions of this map will also include more of the authentic props and assets created in the latter stages of the Battle of Hoth's development, which should heighten the authenticity of this map. There is also the possibility of the release of a parred down infantry only version of the Battle of Hoth map featuring only the interior of Echo Base, though this will depend on the complexity involved in adding bot support for such a complicated environment to see if it is a viable option or not.

The new version will also feature more singleplayer maps from FSX and better hand weapon A.I. support. Development is on track for a release by the end of the month. While you're waiting, check out the in game screenshots above from the upcoming Outpost Hoth map.

Until then...

See you on the Battlefield Troopers!

With EA dropping support of BF2 and BF2142 is it possible to get a free standalone version in the future? Or is this still illegal although EA gives a **** about their games?

Nice idea. Also development shift to AI tweaks and coop maps support and we've got ourselves a best lan-party since battlefront 2 and ut04.

Digging deep into our archives I found a solution to the missing mouse cursor/pointer problem, though not sure if this is going to help you or not. Back in the day this issue was caused by not having BF2142 bang up to date, it occurred when you didn't have the BF2142 1.5 update installed, updating this fixed the problem, but I have to assume you all have that now. Best bet is to make sure that your BF2142 has all the correct final updates. You can find links to these over on the FSMod forums.

I hope that is of help.

I thought the code for mechs wasn't accessible from the BF2 editor, unless you guys somehow gained access to it.

I'm not a coder, so don't know the ins and outs of it, but I do remember that the walker enabling code was one of the key features that lead to us switching up to BF2142. As apparently the solutions they had to come up with via rotational bundles or something to facilitate Walkers in BF1942 for GC was a proper nightmare to implement.

I just hope a solution comes soon. I really don't want to lose this mod. The Star Wars mod for Battlefield 1942, if i read right, is incomplete. I don't want to go back to Battlefront. A little too simple for my taste, and i am sure the new Battlefront game will lack bots like later Battlefield games (its the reason i don't play any Battlefield past 2, not counting Battlefield 2142, which i only play for First Strike).

Well that's really nice to hear. It is good to know our hard work is appreciated. As I've said earlier, we as a dev team will look at our options and see where we can go from here. We aim to have some news out on this subject soon.

On another note, I hope the new DICE made Battlefront will be a different animal to the latest Battlefields and not just a Star Wars reskin of that game. I hope they'll take what was good in the original Battlefront, the grittiness of Battlefield, and maybe even take on a little of what we have done over the years and craft something really special.

Time will tell.

When the BF2142 Master server goes down, will it mean no new copies of BF2142 can be activated, and unlocks for the game being permanently locked, due to no access to the master server? Honestly, I kinda saw this coming a long time ago, and had one solution. Since the BF2 and BF2142 engines are almost the same, Bf2142 being modded with BF2 tools, the community working on solutions to get a new Bf2 master up, and the fact that BF2 doesn't require an EA account in order to activate, perhaps the mod can be backported to BF2. I understand you guys prefer BF2142 over BF2, and would like to keep it up and running, but, if no new copies can be activated after the server shutdown, and no solution is presented within a period of time afterwards, then the mod will slowly but surely die out. I'd rather see it continue development and live on than die with BF2142.

That is a possible solution and may gain us new players from the larger BF2 mod playing community (in fact FS was originally being developed for BF2), however there are issues with key features from BF2142 which are used in FS, namely the code that facilitates walking mechs which we obviously make use of for our Imperial Walkers.

Anyhow, hope to see you guys around this evening for some space based fragging. Should be on from 8pm BST (British Summer Time) onwards.

If you guys opt for a server emulator, could it be made to emulate the server, even without an internet connection? I was discussing this with Dnamro on the First Strike forums. If the server is not connected to, then weapons classified as unlocks (including those that are suppose to be unlocked from the get go) will stay locked. Dnamro confirmed it was the case.
