This Civilization IV mod places a number of Civilizations in a fairy tale world; a world with evil sorcerors, mighty trolls, noble and manly knights, nimble woodelves and hot babes in distress. Original? Bah! This ain't original in any way. No-no. Instead Fairy Tale shamelessly makes use of all common and well-known fantasy and fairy tale clichés to create a pot of humour, excitement and of course pure good old Civilization nationbuilding. This mod does not claim to be original or impressive, nor does it claim to be Fall from Heaven. It does claim to be fun and exciting.

  • 22 very different Fairy Tale nations; all with their own different style and theme. Everything from dark nations of demons and trolls to civilizations of the undead where the warriors are skeletons to hot-babe valkyrie matriarchies to nations of proud knights with fluttering banners and shining armour. All civs demand different playstyles and approaches, and all come complete with own flags and symbols, leaders as well as national history and style.
  • Masses of new units and buildings with fantasy and fairy tale themes, where some of the units were tailored and made specifically for this mod. Build your Royal Family by deploying the King, the Queen and the Princess and watch them do their duty on the battlefield. Each nation also has a special national hero; like the Count, the Huntress, the Underworld Lord and so on, heroes that can travel the world and find adventure. Deploy massive formations of shining, noble knights or charge into battle with the impregnable legions of evil demonic infantry.
  • All Fairy Tale and Fantasy clichés are catered for. Deploy strong dragons to bring fast terror deep behind enemy lines, create a wave of Wolfpacks and unleash them on your unsuspecting rivals, preying on soft targets like settlers and workers without your rival ever knowing who sent the menace, or have witches explore enemy territory and investigate and sabotage their cities and improvements. Create Magicians to unleash their spells of destruction on enemy fortifications and city walls.
  • Fairy Tale and Fantasy type buildings and World Wonders are in place. Erect the Fairy Tale Palace, Forest King's castle or Dome of Prophecy, build the Purple Tower to unite the land under your Imperial rule. All buildings in true fantasy style and design and all nationns have several unique buildings; like the specific Elven Granary and Library and the Collective Hives and Warfactories and the Viking Valkyrie Academy.
  • Play on the great 125x100 detailed map of the Fairy Tale world with 18 civs or play one of the smaller scenarios. You can also play randomly generated maps through some of the map scripts supplied with this mod; PlanetGenerator for instance, which creates a really interesting world with masses of creation process choices! Also included are maps of Tamriel from the Elder Scrolls Series as well as a map of Tolkien's Middle Earth, making those two fantasy lands playable with the Fairy Tale civs!
  • The monumental Imperial War Scenario will let you play the noble Empire as it strives to save the civilized world from the destruction of evil the Demon King himself wants to impose on it, or you can take the other side and lead the Legions of Darkness to world conquest and once and for all destroy Civilization with fire and iron.
  • Unique Fairy Tale music composed by Zero-Project. To set the stage, all National anthems are suitably taken from some of the greatest composers of the 19th century; like Sibelius, Chopin, Tchaikovsky and Wagner.
  • Merged with BUG, giving the player more control over what is happening in the Fairy Tale Kingdom in better report screens and cool graphical functions. The mod is also merged with Better BtS AI, making the AI-led opponent Kingdoms more of a challenge. Now they actually think!

Ah! Missing Interface. Try this. Find the Fairy Tale.ini file in the Fairy Tale folder where you installed it. It's right at the top under Mods/Fairy Tale. Open it using a text editor like Notepdad (just double clicking on it should do it). Find the lines where it says

; Custom Art from user folder is not loaded
NoCustomArt = 0

; Custom XML and Python from user folder are not loaded
NoCustomAssets = 0

Change the numbers to one. Like NoCustomArt = 1 and NoCustomAssets = 1 Then save the file.

That should do it. Now run the mod again and try it out. Report if it works, and if it doesn't, we'll figure out something else, but I think this is the problem.

No panic, we'll solve the problem. I have this game running on my girlfriend's computer and she has Win 7 too, so I know for a fact that it's playable there as well. :)

I've never heard of a gcf error before, but we'll solve your problem. Do you perhaps run a Steam copy of Civilization 4? I think .gcf files has something to do with Steam. Exactly what does the error message say?

Oh. And by the way, you don't need Blue Marble for this mod anymore. We've added better terrain directly into it. The mod will look exactly like in the screenshots when we get it working for you! :)

i got the CD version of the game but the error shows exactly GCF Error: Failed to initialize primary control theme. i think it may be graphics card framing error it makes sense for GCF but i am not even sure i went back and checked the rest of the game and also the other pre installed mods that came game with it and they all worked fine i also downloaded a couple of other mods for bts installed them the same way as i did fairy tale and they work fine. i go into the game go to advance then mods click on fairy tale it takes me back to my desktop then it loads fairy tale about 3/4 of the way then fails with the error. Then it locks up the game and crashes even with the small fix in place.

OK. I found the solution for you. I searched on CivFanatics and sometimes mods do report this GCF error. This is what I found on one of Fall from Heaven's threads; it's written by Kael too (one of the greatest civ modders), and he knows his stuff.

"1. Some people report a "GFC error: failed to initialaize the primary control theme" error loading the mod. In some cases reinstalls have resolved it, in others it seems to be caused when Civ4 isn't installed in the typical location (under Program Files/Firaxis Games/)."

i have gotten rid of it compeltly then reinstalled it about 4 or 5 times now and it is installed properly because both the regular Civ 4 and BTS show up underneath Firaxis games on my start menu. because the same error shows up regardless even after every reinstalled of Fairy tale and i have also done reinstalled it a few times without the small fix. and it happens regardless so any other ideas that were suggested? or you can think of?

OK. Let's continue searchin for your problem. Try installing the two patches Balancing and ArtFix. Especially the ArtFix should be interesting and may actually solve it since it has updates to the ArtDefines-file. I am not sure though, and I'll keep looking for solutions. The CivFanatics forum has a lot of solution suggestions when I search for GFC error, so you're not alone to have this problem with a mod!

Antiscamp Aug 11 2010, 1:56am replied:

I must say that the usual GCF error (reading all the posts about it on CivFanatics) is created by the game itself or the mod being installed to the wrong location. The mod should be installed in Program/2k Games/Firaxis/Civilization4/Beyond the Sword/Mods (or the similar installation folder).

A forum member tells me he's running the mod on Win XP and there's no problem at all. This mod works fine on XP. You're prolly experiencing some other problem then. Try to check that you have the correct install path (it should be in BtS folder/mods), that one's a classic in solving problems with Civ4 mods.

Furthermore. If nothing of the things I've told you works, try to download the mod again. It may be a case of the download having gotten corrupted during the process!

I have no possibility of checking whether the mod works as intended in XP. I've tried it in both Vista and Win7 myself, and I must say that I've never had any report of any failure in XP. But don't worry; I've put a question about it on the forum to see what other XP-users say, and I'll be reporting to you.

Here is some troubleshooting in the meantime. Have you installed all the game files to the correct folder? Not the MyGames folder, but it should be in the Mods folder in your Beyond the Swords catalog. Did you install all the updates in order? Like Full Install V8 first, then 8a and last, 8b. Do you have Patch 3.19?
