Estranged - Attention to DetailLike many gamers have already experienced first hand, Estranged delivered on all fronts and proved to be an incredibly well made Half Life 2 mod. The development effort and attention to detail is apparent from the first moment the mod is started, right to the last glance of the closing scenes. Estranged truly deserves the high score it received in our recent review, which you can read in full on the Virtual Dimensions website.


Alan Edwardes, the lead developer and brain behind Estranged was kind enough to make some time for us to answer some questions about Estranged, the inspiration behind it and the road the team went down to finish developing and releasing the mod.

Quote:Virtual Dimensions: What made you want to create Estranged and what were the key inspirations behind the idea?

Alan Edwardes:
In the beginning there wasn't an overall plan - I wanted to teach myself how to design levels, and the first level I created took a lot of inspiration from the Half-Life: 2 E3 beach. Some of that first level structure is still in the beginning of Estranged: Act I. As I kept adding to the level though, I realised I needed some kind of structure to it, so wrote a bare outline of the story. I added the first character to the game, and from there Estranged was born.


Virtual Dimensions: What in your opinion was the single biggest challenge to overcome in finishing and releasing Estranged?

Alan Edwardes:
The single biggest challenge for me was learning the toolset in the beginning, and the codebase. Since this was my first ever exposure to C++, it was a very steep learning curve. It has paid off though, and immersing myself in those worlds really paid off in terms of learning.

I just played the steam verson, and I have to admit, it was pretty good. Your map design was excellent in how it looked, if not so much in how it played. The voice acting was also amazing for it being a free mod.

However, you really need to work on how the gameplay actually works. It feels really bland and easy. The 'zombies' barely do any sort of damage, and they die in a few hits. They also always come alone(except for in one case) and even with a melee, feel rather harmless. For being an outbreak, it feels like the islanders should of been able to wipe them out no problem.

That brings me to the story. It is rather bland and generic, using the same plot as a lot of zombie movies. Ignoring the giant plothole of the main character(A fisherman) somehow having military level training with guns, its a generic "Evil corp makes zombies on island, and attempts to cover it up" plotline. This really ruined the experience for me, as the maps looked brilliant, and made me want to explore everywhere and see everything.
Im hoping that when act 2 comes out, you will improve greatly on the story and gameplay. I see a bright future for this mod if you do.

Yeah I said the same thing about the gameplay as well a couple of months ago, that they should dedicate a few team members on modifying the gameplay. Ah well.

Congrats for getting on Steam, this is a big step forward that most mods never take. Let's hope the mod continues forward so we can have more sexy environments and great amounts of zambambo slaying.

I liked the steam version, IMHO it was definately better than the beta in some cases like the Hutman, it's just that the experience as a whole felt a lot less memorable, the beta ended with a bang, the final version ends with a bang aswell but then there's a quiet part after it and that softened the impact the mod had on me. It's just that the ending felt unrewarding, in the beta the simple fade to black, while un-complex, made me want to play more as I was about to enter a new environment and I wanted to see what happened next. I'm not sure if i am making sense or not but there was more tension in the beta ending than the steam ending.

This was an awesome mod. A few minor things like a crowbar on the ceiling, but i guess thats me not liking a slight challenge, i just spend like 20 mins chucking the rocks at the boards, enjoying the story so far and cant wait till a more complete story comes to light.

Keep up the good work and cant wait for the new weapons coming.

P.S. Im loving them Custom Barrels!
