Sins of a Solar Empire is often described as a 4XRTS game, or a game that tried to merge the action and tactics packed gameplay of a Real time strategy game with the deep, complex, empire wide strategy of a 4X turn based game. It's up to debate whether Sins succeeded in this goal, but I think all can agree that of the 4Xs of "explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate", Sins is much more focused on the exterminate than on the others. This mod seeks to give more depth to the other 3Xs of the game by adding additional game elements or refining the existing ones to reward players who give more strategic thought to the non-combat side of the game. Combat will still be the center point of the game, but players will find that the non-combat options available will be much more rewarding. Spying, exploring, sabotage, diplomacy, culture, and economic development have all been added or changed in innovative new ways. Regardless of what you think Sins is, this is the 4XRTS it should have been.

All you need to know about Star Wars: Interregnum.

What is Star Wars: Interregnum?

Star Wars: Interregnum is an upcoming Star Wars Mod for Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion. Essentially a combination of my previous modding projects, Star Wars: Requiem (not formally associated with this project in any way) and the Enhanced 4X Mod, it aims to create the deepest and most entertaining Star Wars Galactic Conquest experience yet.

How is this mod different from the other Star Wars mods?

Interregnum will be a unique Star Wars experience is a multitude of ways. For one, unlike Sins of a Galactic Empire and the planned Star Wars: Ascendancy and Star Wars: Alliance, Interregnum is not a total conversion, meaning the races from Sins of a Solar Empire like the Advent and Vasari are still playable and in fact are just as important to the mod's story. Unlike fellow "Expansion Mod" Star Wars: Requiem however, the gameplay will not be strictly limited to fit into Sins of a Solar Empire's gameplay template, allowing the mod to feel more unique and delve deeper into the Expanded Universe.

Another key difference is that the Interregnum will be built on the foundations of the previously mentioned Enhanced 4X Mod, a popular mod designed to flesh out the gameplay of Rebellion. The new factions added by Interregnum will be compliant with all the structural changes made by that mod, including things like Hero Units and Random Encounters that are sure to work well in a Star Wars theme.

Finally, while the limitations of Rebellion sadly make a campaign unfeasible, Interregnum will feature its own lore and story line, as the races of Sins of a Solar Empire flee to the Star Wars galaxy to escape destruction at the hands of the Vasari's pursuers, irreversibly changing Galactic History forever.

What factions will Interregnum include?

Interregnum will add 4 new factions, for a total of 10 playable factions when added to the Rebellion races. They include:

The Galactic Empire: The successor state of Palpatine's Empire, ruled by Darth Vader following his death.

The Imperial Warlords: A faction representing the various Imperial leaders who set up their own governments as the Empire fragmented after Palpatine's demise.

The Rebel Alliance: The original military arm of the Alliance to Restore the Republic, as it continues its insurgency to defeat the Empire.

The New Republic: The new government formed by pro-Rebel Outer Rim worlds who gained Independence after the Empire was forced to retreat to the inner Galaxy. While technically apart of the Rebel Alliance, it has formed its own institutions and military focused on protecting its members rather than destroying the Empire.

What other features will Interregnum have?

Building on Enhanced 4X, all factions will have things like Hero Units, Embassies, Espionage, and more fleshed out faction diversity and Empire mechanics. The Star Wars factions in particular are designed to play very differently from each other, with very exaggerated strengths and weakness to force specific tactics and strategies. The Galactic Empire for example will feature a Morale and Promotion system, while the New Republic starts out as a relatively fragile faction but becomes a well rounded Super Power if given enough time to develop.

The Enhanced 4X mod will also cause Interregnum to inherit its balanced planet system based on the Infinite Space mod. It will also have Star Wars themed random encounters, from rogue Imperial Moffs to Independent planets such as Hapes to explore. There are also preliminary plans for changing the Pirates into feared Mandalorian Mercenaries, capable of conquering planets rather than merely destroying trade ship.

When will Interregnum be released?

Interregnum is still in the early stages of development but is well underway. The goal is for the first alpha version, with a near feature complete Galactic Empire faction to be released by the end of the year.

I understand that this is in very early stages of development but is there any idea on adding other star wars factions? IE Hutts(or blacksun/any other pirates) to replace the pirates, or clone wars factions or old republic ones?

If not I'm still excited to see how this turns out. Best of luck to you!

There will be no races from earlier eras, the story of Interregnum begins immediately before Episode VI; the clone wars are over and the Republic is dead. Besides, 10 factions may very well be pushing the limits of what Sins can do as it is.

The criminal underworld of Star Wars on the otherhand will be getting some attention, though finishing the main races is the first priority. I do plan on replacing the Pirates with Mandalorian raiders, and other groups may appear as minor factions or random encounters. While not playable there will be a way for their unique ships to be used by the player.

I'll write a more detailed version of it sometime, but basically the Battle of Endor in the Interregnum timeline was fought by the TEC, Ascended Advent and VIR instead of the Rebels, and since Luke was not there yet Vader was on the Executor, not the Death Star II. He was thus able to escape with most of the Imperial fleet when the Death Star was destroyed.
