Sins of a Solar Empire is often described as a 4XRTS game, or a game that tried to merge the action and tactics packed gameplay of a Real time strategy game with the deep, complex, empire wide strategy of a 4X turn based game. It's up to debate whether Sins succeeded in this goal, but I think all can agree that of the 4Xs of "explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate", Sins is much more focused on the exterminate than on the others. This mod seeks to give more depth to the other 3Xs of the game by adding additional game elements or refining the existing ones to reward players who give more strategic thought to the non-combat side of the game. Combat will still be the center point of the game, but players will find that the non-combat options available will be much more rewarding. Spying, exploring, sabotage, diplomacy, culture, and economic development have all been added or changed in innovative new ways. Regardless of what you think Sins is, this is the 4XRTS it should have been.

Both games I played with the Enhanced 4X mod have frozen beyond all repair. Advent Loyalist at 2:36, most techs researched, extensive colonisation, using drone fleets. Other races have a passion for mines (probably increasing the number of objects to be tracked). Vasari Rebels at 4:00, large corvette swarms.
In both cases the game was only using 1 gig of 8 gig of ram and less than 100% on 1 core of a 4 core cpu. Graphics card only using 400 - 500 mb of 2 gig available.
I've tried rebooting, shutting down everything else, increasing cpu priority, disabling antivirus and other things that I've forgotten. No joy.
The sounds continue, doesn't sound like a hung loop, but no further graphics movement or interaction with the game interface is possible.
I've played huge maps to the end using vanilla and almost 2 gig of ram with no problems other than the usual mini-dump issues.
Bummed because I really like the mod.

I'm afraid its hard for me to trouble shoot that problem since I run into that in Vanilla Rebellion. I've had to start playing more like mutliplayer games because if I can't win by the 3 or 4 hour mark performance will degrade too much. I also try to avoid lots of carriers, since strikecraft seem to be the biggest killers of frame rate.
That said, I've detailed a lot of changes in the next version that should help performance, mainly be slashing the number of mines and substantially reducing the number of strikecraft that will be flying around late game. Also Rebellion 1.04 is due out this month, which is supposed to have a few engine optimizations. Perhaps they'll be significant.
