I actually am a big fan of the sashes. They look totally unique and really cool. Maybe Adamin could tell us if there is an artistic reason behind them. Beside merely being aesthetically pleasing I mean

Several military units wore sashes both in Antiquity and the Middle Ages. It was a pratical way to store several thing, including rations, ammo (slings), hidden weapons (daggers and hatchets for example) and also acted has a badge of sorts, to distinguish rank, unit, clan/tribe...

Actually there is a reason! ^^
They are inherited from the previous Erebor Elite Axefighters. We really liked the look of their sashes, so we wanted to keep them for one of the new Elite units.

Also the sash adds another nice asymmetrical detail to the Unburnt, next to the belt and the weapons. It kind of fits to Ered Luins general feel of "ramshacklery".

I will try to leave my "modest" feedback:

This unit looks really impressive. :)
I really like ram's details on unit. Helmet, chest armor, shoulders armor have been done really impressive with these ram's details. :)
I really like new skin, but there is few thing which could be improved more to consistency terms.

First I also find a sash a bit new. Sashes have been used in military services from ancient times, and there is reasons for adding them to dwarven military unit (in this case very expereicend dwarven elite), so I am not having problem with idea.
Sashes have been mainly used as belt with one diagonal part over one shoulder. So from that aspect I find current straight part from shoulder to leg a bit new. I don't have some problem with it, just one consistency detail should be improved, that straight part should be belted, otherwise it would be the most disturbing thing to warrior during combat. So that part should go under not over belt!
Same for beard, I really like you have used "blonde" color at last, but with its lenght should be deal in same way as with straight part of sash. It should be belted.

Other details are pretty amazing in graphical and consistency terms. :)
In general, great work as always! :)

Best regards,
CragLord

This sash does have a part that diagonally goes from one shoulder to the waist, the other bit is more like an insignia, to show that the warrior is an Unburnt veteran.

I don't have any first hand data on this, but I think belting your beard must be really distracting, won't it?

Imagine tying your chin to your pelvis. Every time you turn your head you will pull on your chin. THAT must be disturbing!

Oh, I am sorry not to be precise in previous one, so I left you space for misunderstanding.
Also I agree about situation you imagined, but that isn't case with long beard, when you have "not tight zone" between belted point and chin.
If would be so distracting, if you decide to belt your beard so it became so "tight" in same time.
I was referning on this situation mainly you decided to give "Merlin's beard" ( Blog.eyewire.org) to the dwarves. It is not so hard to presume that shape of beard with that ornament on bottom wil cause some disturbing movements during swiging with weapons.But again, this is just minor consistency thing, and I am just referning on it, I really don't have some problem with current look. :)

PS. Also that "belting" beard idea was common with more experienced dwarven fighters who had these long beards, as we can find in description of IH veterans, so it could be very reasonable suggestion for these surviviours of many battles. ;)

Regards,
CragLord

I Love these guys. They look absolutely stunning, yet not to heavily armored for the elites of a light armored faction. But what I love most about them is their name the dubbel meaning is ust epic! XD

P.S. I think in the descriptive text you meant "merciless fate" instead of "merciful fate".;)

Reply Good karma Bad karma+3 votes
jfpoliveira12

I think they did mean "merciful" because these dwarves are the ones who survived.

I was gonna suggest you guys to use the amazing Ram Helmet (but as usual I'm a lazy *** who has ten ideas in his mind at any given time and only puts out 2 or so here and in MU), I'm glad you used them.
DAMN, that axe, those paultrons, that armor ridden with jewels.
PERFECT

Hmm, on the one hand, I was sort of hoping this unit would wield a two handed sword or axe, on the other hand, the model looks legitimately badass. So are they all blonde or will you guys add a few brunettes among their ranks?

Reply Good karma Bad karma+2 votes
Adamin Author
Adamin - - 253 comments

They will stay all blonde for now.

We originally wanted to give them the two handed Walking Axes from the guardians, and have another Upgrade for the guardians. But as a "last minute change" we decided for the Axe-Sword-Combination instead. It just seemed more interesting for them.

Concerning the Name of the Unburnt there was a great note in Appendix A, Durin's Folk, which was our main inspiration:

~~~
To fire therefore they turned, rather than leave their kin to beast or bird or carrion-orc. But those who fell in Azanulbizar were honoured in memory, and to this day a Dwarf will say proudly of one of his sires: 'he was a burned Dwarf', and that is enough.
~~~

The Unburnt are meant to carry their name as a reminder. A reminder that they survived the great tragedies of their Folk on the one hand, but also that they haven't yet achieved their burned ancestors honour on the other hand.

I just took some time to appreciate the design of this unit, and then I just had to comment how brilliant it really is. I was simply overcome with joy when I saw the diamond-like scale armour on the guy on the left. Absolutely magnificent!

Since the Blue Mountain dwarves are focused on mobility do you think these fellas could incorporate a move relating to their ram themed armor maybe a bull rush like the current Iron Hills Guardians or a temporary ram rush similar to Murins special ability?

Description

The Unburnt are the elite fighters of Ered Luin, Thorins trustworthy vanguard. They are named for all the dwarves who survived the attack of Smaug the Terrible, and the funeral pyres of Azanulbizar. Hardened by their merciful fate, they hit fast and fierce in battle to prevent the enemys attack.
