Dust takes place on the planet of Ahria, a planet composed entirely of desert. By supposed divine fate the civilized peoples of Ahria have survived atop the plateaus of the planet. The plateaus of Refuge and Endeavor are blessed with deep and infinite aquifers of water that have allowed civilization to flourish.

Ahria is a planet of lore and magic. The dunes of Ahria are riddled with ruins of many ancient civilizations. Most are home to arcane secrets, artifacts of great power, and deadly beasts. The people of Ahria have ventured into the desert and have successfully mapped out 1750 square miles of terrain. This 1750 square mile area is known as the Explored Traverse. During the exploration of the Traverse, explorers have mapped ruins, landmarks, and have created three areas based on geological features. The Tower of Baal can be seen just about anywhere atop Endeavor.

The Cusp is the area immediately surrounding the two plateaus of Refuge and Endeavor that extends up to 200 miles outward in some areas. It is composed of light sand and has an abundant amount of desert vegetation. It has become safer to colonize with the use of huge aqueducts. It is inhabited by many Beasts including Serpentine, Stalkers, and the occasional Antlion.

The Flatlands are composed of less dunes and more sandstone. The area is home to more Beasts than any of the other sectors. The majority of ancient ruins exist within the Flatlands. Colonization has been slow in the Flatlands; however, many underground mineral mines have been excavated and are being used for natural resources.

The Badlands are considered the last frontier of Ahria. They extend from the Flatlands to the cliffs of the Scarp, a huge cliff that people believe to be the end of the world. Few Beasts reside in the Badlands, but a majority of Ahria's natural resources, including oil, iron, and carbon are harvested here.

How does Dust begin?

Day 3, Half-Moon 6844. An unknown object enters the Ahrian atmosphere. Upon crash landing in the Cusp, a violent explosion erupts. As a member of the Ahrian Defense Corps you take the role of Lieutenant Vandrose, an avatar of player creation. You, and the members of Reconnaissance Squad 131, are the first sent to the Crash Site. The Endeavor Aquifers descend from the plateau. Your mission: to clear the area for further inspection by scientists. However, upon arriving at the site, you find that this anomaly is far more precarious than any could imagine.

Rising Concerns

News

A couple(literally two) people have mentioned that either the Source engine won't satiate the requirement for big maps, or that the goals of the project are too great. So to clarify things to repudiate any further questions, A.) the game is not open-ended, therefore the map size of the Source Engine will do fine, and B.) the game is a concept, things change, and already have.

Among these changes are:
• Removal of the Hunt mode, far to large, open-ended will not work
• Weapon count of 100+ was a bit much, I have however fully design more than 70% of the weapons and am at roughly 40 weapons.

So, I understand how you guys feel. Just keep in mind it's a concept. It's also my first publicly released mod concept. Thanks for your understanding.

I can gurantee that this mod is gonna die... Or at least its gonna not turn out as they want it. They are searching for diffrent engines, which means theres a good chance they have no idea how to actually do anything on the engines theyre trying to do. Spells? Over 100 weapons? Multi? Single? Custom? 2o HOURS? The only way you could achieve this mod would be if you had like... I dont know, 10 modelers and 10 mappers or more. Sorry for being a critic, but its true lol!

This is why it is called a concept. I understand what you are saying. This is my first venture into video game modding and probably my last. I'm not sure if it will make it either. I figured, however, that it was a good idea and I thought I might be able to get it going.

I like the idea, but you just need to downsize... Maybe make a much smaller one before you begin this?

Yeah. I've been trying to find a good game to start and make content for like Oblivion and Fallout 3. Both the editors for those games **** me off, and I'm having a hard time finding another game that I can both enjoy and be able to create custom content for.

Just a note, if you were planning large, explorable, open environments the Source engine will only accomodate 1km3 size maps.

I've noticed the size of maps while playing HL2 and they should suit just fine. The design doesn't call for the game to be an open ended world.
