Duke Nukem: Weapon of Mass Destruction is a gameplay mod for Duke Nukem 3D. It has tons of new weapon modes, enemies, and player abilities, such as UT style dodge moves, spinning hook kicks, and a Duke bot companion who fights by your side. In some levels you can even get in your skycar and fly it, doing bombing runs on enemies. In DNWMD, Duke collects glowing coins from slain enemies which are used to purchase various upgrades via a mouse controlled menu. In addition, each of Duke's weapons has its own experience level which increases with use.

DNWMD is an action packed shooter with RPG elements. I worked hard on this for almost a year, and while I've made other mods in that time, this one is still the most fun by far. If you haven't played Duke Nukem 3D in a while, don't miss this. It runs using the included EDuke32 source port, which has improved graphics and other features, and runs smoothly in XP.

The only file you need from your Duke 3D installation is "duke3d.grp" -- everything else is included with the DNWMD download. Once you have followed the simple installation instructions (just drop the contents of DNWMD.rar into your Duke 3D folder and click on the .bat file), there is an in-game help system with pop-up windows, in addition to a help screen accessible from the upgrade menu. While the gameplay is very deep and complex, it's easy to get started and very addicting.

DNWMD can be played with all the episodes of the original game, and I have included two additional episodes of some of the best user maps ever made.

DNWMD is also compatible with the Hi Res Pack for Duke 3D (a collection of hi-res textures and models which replace the original 8-bit art). To use the HRP, just create a folder named "autoload" and put duke3d_hrp.zip into that folder.

DNWMD 1.4 Released!

7 years ago News 1 comment

There's a lot new stuff in this release of Duke Nukem: Weapon of Mass Destruction. Bugs have been fixed, features have been added and improved.

Highlights of 1.4:

  • A new episode, consisting of high quality maps of various ages. I call it "Duke Nukem Ad Infinitum." The new episode features a few levels with the new controllable Skycar (model by Teamonster). Here is a video from the first level, an exclusive map made by DavoX (with some stuff added by me):

  • Lots of bugfixes and improvements to existing features
  • Added various effects from Duke Plus, such as rain and snow, and damage decals (thanks again to Hellbound for creating the original artwork for most of that, and also Teamonster and other HRP contributors)
  • Balancing, tweaking...you get the idea. This is big update. The core gameplay is the same as before, the monsters and weapons are mostly the same, but a lot of things have been improved.
  • Known bugs. If you die while flying the Skycar and then restart the level without restoring from a save, the next time you get in the Skycar the player's view will be in the wrong position until you press F7 a couple of times. I think this is a quirk in EDuke32 having to do with forcing over_shoulder_on to 1 before a player dies. I recommend always restoring from saved games in this mod rather than restarting levels, for this and other reasons.

This is exactly the same as version 1.5, except that it fixes two levels that were impossible to exit (blackend.map and voa.map), due to me including...

This is a great mod. Some features such as upgradeable character, alternate fire modes and Duke bot are nice. The gameplay feels totally different, which is a good thing. It's amazing what can be done with the CON scripting of EDuke32.

Seriously, one of the best mods! Also, nice that some guys are still modding the "old" DN3D, thank you! Don't stop with this now since it's so great :)

The new version fixes bugs, improves balance (especially towards the second half of the game), adds a few new super monsters, and generally tweaks a lot of stuff. If there are no bugs, this may be the last version ever (but then again I'm always saying that).

I just uploaded a new version, along with a few new pics for the gallery. The two biggest changes in this release are:

1) All the weapons are upgraded on an experience system. The more you use a weapon the more powerful it becomes. But if you neglect other weapons, experience gain slows to a crawl. Therefore, you must use a variety of weapons to level them up efficiently.

2) There is now an in-game help system, with windows that pop-up and provide useful information at appropriate times. This means that you can learn all the basics without looking at html documentation. The documentation is still useful for learning the finer points of the game, but people who want to jump right in now have no obstacle.

If you have an older version, you should reinstall it from scratch to use the new one. All you need is a directory that contains an Atomic edition copy of the file "duke3d.grp". Just place the contents of DNWMD.rar into that directory and run the .bat file to start the mod.

Ah, I see that the download is working. I'll check in periodically to answer questions, provide tech support, and receive bug reports and suggestions.

I have uploaded the mod. The file must be approved before it becomes available, which is supposed to take 72 hours or less. In the mean time, if you click on the link to the documentation at the end of the mod description above, you will find working download links. These go to a version that is very slightly older than the one I have uploaded here, but the differences are tiny.
