DREAM CASTERS' DUEL is an original, online, multi-player, UT2k4 mod. Dream Casters' Duel will combine elements of a FPS with a barebones fighting game in a stylized, anime setting. DCD will feature:

  • FUN!
  • Cel-shaded rendering and anime styling throughout.
  • An engaging storyline and compelling characters.
  • A wide range of original, telekinesis-styled attacks.
  • Combo theory reminiscent of your favorite 2D fighters transplaced in 3D environments.
  • Surreal maps and seemingly hallucinogenic game-play.

Synopsis: Lucid dreaming: A phenomenon in which a dreaming individual is able to consciously bend the reality of the dream world to his or her own will, performing, for all intensive purposes, the miraculous...

Osaka, Japan. Electronics goods here are cheap and plentiful, and foreign companies can conduct business shrouded in a secrecy misattributed to cultural and language barriers. It's exactly this kind of environment that the Dream Research Institute wants to capitalize on as it conducts research into the anomaly of lucid dreaming. Funded by a military research department, the ODRI hopes to understand how the disembodied, persistent consciousness of the lucid dream state operates and use that understanding to pilot a new generation of unmanned vehicles.

At the ODRI, researcher Alchem Albrecht has assembled a contingent of test-subjects willing to conduct a foray into the nether regions of human conscious and beyond. The test-subjects all possess the ability to dream lucidly and have been hired to prove their proficiency. Empowered with the latest technology, Alchem Albrecht is able to both challenge and observe the contestants within the dream state. Only the most fantastic dreamers will witness the results of these experiments... Fewer still will come to understand their purpose, and only one will achieve their significance....

Game Play Synopsis: Dream Caster's Duel will combine elements of a FPS with a barebones fighting game in a stylized, anime setting. The POV will be third-person in order to better facilitate hand-to-hand combat. In each map, characters will initially engage each other in hand-to-hand combat, using blocks, parries, throws, punches, and kicks of varying speeds and strengths. Successful hand-to-hand combat will result in an increase of the character's concentration level. Concentration levels can also be achieved by meditating, though meditation will leave the character vulnerable to attack.

Different levels of concentration will enable the character to execute varying strengths of telekinesis attacks including projectiles, summons, and cinematic finishing moves. These moves are character specific.

Great news! I've recently been given the opportunity to incorporate the game development company MJK Studios. The studio is unique because it has the full backing of State University of NY at Fredonia and its associated technology business incubator: Incubator.fredonia.edu

Being accepted into the technology incubator program means that we're being fast-tracked for rapid growth. Being accepted into a University affiliated tech incubator also increases the odds of success for a start-up by 60%! This has obvious implications for DreamCasters' Duel, the current flagship title for the studios!

Here's a picture of the new office!

And what would a 1337 game design studio's offices be without extravagant touches like a Capcom Mini-Cute arcade cabinet imported from Japan and Mamed? :)

The restoration is a WIP. You can follow the restoration here: Forum.arcadecontrols.com

As a start-up, we are looking to quickly develop a reliable and readily available revenue stream. In the next few months we'll be rolling out some semi-casual arcade-styled shooters with unique and addictive gameplay elements. We'll be developing using the Unity engine and deploying to iOS, Android, PC, and XBLA. Look to moddb.com's Jobs section for, uh, jobs!

These smaller titles will help MJK Studios build a war chest that we can use to give DreamCasters' Duel the full treatment it deserves! Being inducted into the incubator program and being able to develop an entire studio is much welcomed validation for not having gone the copyright infringing route of so many other mods. Great things to follow! Thank you for you continuing support!!!

why isnt it fair to say they arent good? Its my opinion so I can state myself.
Even if theyre "anime-anatomical" correct (which is a vague term), the coloring makes them look messed to me since it appears like they have no depth at all.
And no, I do not have an aversion to anime, as a matter of fact I love anime I just dont like that specific style.
Whatsoever, good to hear this is not just everything you've got. Now Im actually eager to find out how the visual style of the actual game turns out.

*repeats mantra* Constructive criticism is good.

DJ-Ready, I agree with you that a mod should not consist solely of concept art. This however, is not the case with DCD. I already have numerous visual materials created, including renders and production videos, that will be released according to the PR schedule. Even more media than what is referenced in the schedule will be available to members of the DCD forums.

I also agree with you that the website and game concept are nice.

I have to disagree that "the cocepts (sic) arent (sic) that good either, propotions (sic) are messed (sic)". The concept art pieces were actually traced from 'concept' renders of character meshes I designed. The meshes themselves were created as overlays of anatomical and 'anime anatomical' reference materials. The meshes and subsequent line art (with the exception of Mina's fingers perhaps) are all proportioned to exacting specifications. If you think they are "messed" it may just be because of your aversion to the anime style, but I don't think it's fair to say that they aren't that good. Further, I think that they the character concepts are more original than what you would find in a comporable retail game.

Generating hype will be necessary to attract mappers and coders to the project.

Finally, hello and thnx again to rolf106 who seems to be everywhere at once today!

Thats exactly whats disturbing me. They act (sort of) professional but I just cant picture them as those by judging those concepts.
No offense though. Cant judge the game when I havent seen/played it yet.
well whatever.

i would say that while it may leave people in the dark as to how the game will be played out, everything was done very professionaly as to the updates and the site. the site looks just as good as any game or tv show's. I would say that it is OK for this game to be missing media rite now because of how everything is all put together.

I think your effort to put up some kind of "hype" for your game without showing actual ingame content is a bad idea.
Only a few concepts available and nothing else is always a bad thing imho. The cocepts arent that good either, propotions are messed and I personally dont like the style of them either.

However, the website idea is really nice and the idea behind the game sounds nice, too.
still, no visual content = thumbs down

Thnx for all the comments and encouraging words!

Jim_bond, the site will be deployed on Sept. 15th. It looks pretty good if I may say so myself. It's unique if nothing else. Most of the links will be unavailable initially but will be updated as media is released according to the PR Schedule. If you're interested in the mapping position, plz pm me in the dcdthegame.com/forums as per the help wanted request (just so that I'm not accused of favoritism). I hope to release with at least six maps, so I'll need all the help I can get!

Thnx again!
