Discovery mod is a full-scale expansion pack for Freelancer focused on continuing the story started in the vanilla campaign. The mod is used by some of the busiest multiplayer Freelancer servers and has multiplayer features including player owned (and built) bases, jumpdrives, cloaking devices and equipment manufacturing.

Version 4.84 contains more changes than any previous Discovery version. Almost half a hundred original ship models were created for the mod by our community members. Many more faction systems received long-awaited updates, and 5 new systems were introduced. With numerous new weapons for fighters and capital ships, it became much easier to create versatile and balanced setup for any ship you like. More equipment types were introduced, including new scanners, thrusters, and countermeasure droppers. In addition to that, many profitable and dangerous trade routes were added, involving both new and original commodities. Top-level NPCs became more challenging than before. History of Discovery continues: while Kusari onslaught into Bretonia has been stopped, fierce fighting in Tau systems still continues. The Wild are building a Nomad gate in Omega, its destination yet unknown. Rheinland accuses Liberty of illegal experiments with Nomads in the Alaska system.

- Download and save it anywhere on your PC.
- Install Freelancer Mod Manager (FLMM) v1.31 if you haven't already - you can download FLMM from this page, Useful Goodies section.
- Double-click and wait until it unpacks. If .flmod extension is not identified, choose FLMM manually to open the file.
- After unpacking is complete, select Discovery 4.84 in FLMM mod browser, press "Activate", and choose setup options you prefer (it's safe to leave default values).
- Launch Freelancer and enjoy playing in single or multi-player mode!

Before you Start

1) When turning Open SP on, make sure that you have a backup of Freelancer\DLLS\BIN\content.dll file. Freelancer Mod Manager (FLMM) will delete this file during mod deactivation, and you'll need to restore it manually. If Open SP is not enabled, content.dll will not be deleted.
2) It is not recommended to install any other mods or patches prior to and after Discovery activation. 1.1 official patch is included into the mod.
3) If Discovery won't activate properly in FLMM, your Freelancer installation is most probably corrupt. Reinstall Freelancer, and FLMM, if necessary.
4) Do not forget to transfer scanners, ID items, and armor upgrades each time when you buy a new ship. These items are displayed in 'Internal Equipment' section of ship inventory.
5) ID items present in Discovery are not used only for role-playing. They also act as tractor beams. Freelancer IDs are available for purchase from every base (500 credits).
6) If your large ship gets stuck while undocking from certain space stations, try moving backward and strafing, use thruster, or log off and on again with your character.
7) If you are automatically kicked from multiplayer servers, either check your ship loadout for equipment that's no longer mountable on this ship, or stop cheating.
8) Never enable Open SP when playing online.
9) Make sure your cruise speed never exceeds 350 (Discovery limit). If it does, reinstall the mod, or you will be banned for speed modding in multiplayer. The speed limit might be higher than 350 due to FLMM error (1.4 beta in particular).
10) Refer to the Readme.txt file if you need help and more information.

If anyone is having problems running anything Freelancer on a shared computer (even if your admin), right click on the file or shortcut and
'Run as Administrator'

This has solved most of my problems.
Don't forget to restart the computer when ever you activate mod(s).

I can't seem to get 1.4 to download/install correctly always says 'files corrupt'. 1.3 works well.
I REALLY like the Disovery mod. The Corsair Cruiser 'Huntress' and that heavy fighter/frieghter avalible @ planet Harris and the Hood are oh so sweet! I look forward to finding/dicovering more, more! MORE!
I get the larger and capital ships stuck while leaving a base or caught
in a trade lane ring, getting stuck in 'rock' bases, (i.e. Mactan), is most frequent. Its a pain in the tush, often, and more than one location in game for those of use who play but can't seem to find the EXE ini file...what ever line it is...

The latest ver of Discovery is always 'corrupt' when triing to instll no matter where I get it from.
What a bad butt mod! I could only wish that there is more purpouse to some of the new systems. AAANNNDD What the heck is Toledo all about!
Sometimes I forget to restart the comp when I deactivate and reactivate the mod(cheat, to get a new ship new loc and new $, my scout for main save game, it really tough navigating ateroid fields in a cap ship)... anyway, when I forget to restart the comp ?default?, starts me out in Toledo. Whats in Toledo? I cant get out! wheres the J holes!!

DreadfulBride: Thanks for answering my question :).Now I will answer yours. Try looking in the top left hand corner of F4 in Omicron Minor, there should be a jump hole to Alaska. When you arrive in Alaska head to G6, there should be a jump gate to New York (it should be in the middle of the right edge, but you've probably seen it already).

P.S. You will probably encounter Nomads on the way.(Only their Gunboats have Cruise Disrupters).

I have a question about this mod/Suggestion. For those who don't really want the enhanced AI for reasons, is they're any way to get rid of the file that has the AI enhance? If not could you make a difficulty option where the NPC AI's don't or do use the Nanobots or shield batteries?

Igiss Jul 15 2008 replied:

Such option is too risky for multiplayer. NPCs will be rebalanced anyway in the next version, and it's probable that all except for a few won't use repairs any longer.

When I go to "Multiplayer" (LAN or Internet), the list is empty (Connecting to global server...). I tried even with the mod deactivated, even putting servers to favorites (add the s<IP> to their shortcuts or AddFLserver in Freelancer). The list is just empty ! And, I didn't set any filters (all are disabled).

How can I play online?

Hello i'm wondering if anyone can help me with some issues i'm having with the discovery mod. I've been happily playing discovery SP for the last few weeks but then my freelancer became corrupted, I tried to reinstall FL + FLMM/disc mod but I lost all of my save games. I thought this no problem as I can just disable the story mode and start from where I left off, I tried this and it worked no probs, I was in omicron alpha with 10 mil but there were none of the mod ships or weapons available.

I tried to uninstall FL but the uninstaller refuses to work so I have to delete the files manually. Now when I reinstall FL + FLMM and I try to start openSP, I always end up in Omicron Major with no cash and no way to get out.

I don't really want to go through all of the story again so any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards

hey everyone i'm new to this site, but have been playing freelancer for years. the discovery mod is amazing, it makes the game alot more interesting.

i've only come across a couple of problems. the npc shield/hull thing as mentioned before (would be nice to be able to choose between the original style and the discovery mod style).

also i don't know if anyone else encountered this, but while playing the sp missions i couldn't buy the anubis for 1,100 credits as normal. it was up for sale for just shy of 300,000 credits..... very annoying as i had to carry on with my liberty defender :( (which i still have as i can find a decent ship for 250,000 credits...)

p.s. does anyone know any good ways to make lots of money

Will discovery ever have added objects in space like blackholes, neutron stars etc etc, also will their ever be a jump gate that can take you back to Sol, I say these things because I just tryed out the crossfire mod but I still prefer discovery, but if discovery had these things like in the crossfire mod the discovery mod would be so much better.

I don't know if anyone is still reading these comments -- I haven't seen an answer to the latest questions, but here goes...

I just picked up Freelancer again after it had been sitting on the shelf for quite awhile -- ever since I maxed out on level and ship after playing the SP game. Well, I found Discovery, which looks like it opens a few new doors. My questions are as follows:

Is there a difference between playing with Open SP enabled or disabled, if I'm playing a character that has already finished the SP campaign game?

I've played a little in MP mode running my own server, some with friends, and some with just my own character to get around having to play the SP campaign again. Is there any benefit to playing Discovery in MP mode vs. SP mode, if I'm running my own server?

I like the new ships and systems. Thanks for what looks like it's going to be a fun mod.

There should not be any difference between playing OpenSP and Campaign SP, IF you've started campaign with Discovery activated. Saves that you've got while using other mods/original game may not be compatible.

Also, a cumulative reply to everyone having installation problems. After you install FL, just copy all files you have in Microsoft Games\Freelancer folder to a safe location. Then, if you have problems, remove your previous files and copy the backup back to Microsoft Games\Freelancer. This is the fastest way to fix such problems. In some cases, reinstalling FLMM with deleting all mods is also necessary.

I have spent 2.5 hours tonight trying to get this mod running. here are the issues:
I am running windows vista, with administrator priveleges.
I downloaded the mod and got the "Access to C:\Program Files\Freelancer Mod Manager\mods\Discovery484\EXE\Common.dll was denied" error.
this is what I have tried so far:
Uninstall FMM..restart..reinstall FMM :fail
Uninstall FL..restart..reinstall FL :fail
Uninstall FMM..Uninstall FL..restart Reinstall FL..Reinstall FMM : fail
Uninstall FL..Uninstall FMM..restart..use registry cleaner..restart..reinstall FL..Reinstall FMM :fail.

always with the same error.
I have downloaded both from here, and directly from the Discovery site, the 484 mod and repeated the process above.

Does this mod simply not work with vista?
or if someone is up and running with vista is there any advice?

well for one which mod manager are u using
its best to have 1.3 to get the v4.84 to work or v4.85 also
some of the older discovery mods i have noticed myself wont work with v1.4 only with 1.3
but when u uninstall flmm make sure whn u reinstall it that u run the program as admin before loading up ur discoveryv484 or discovery v485 flmod's
also make sure u deactive an restore all files before u start the discovery mod plus make sure the save files for that mod is deleted manually thru my documents\my games\freelancer\singleplayer\ an what ever mod was actived like discvory-speed folder
once all that has been done reload the discovery flmod then active
make sure ur ur freelancer icon on ur desktop is also run as admin too
