Dino D-Day is an exciting new First Person Shooter from 800 North (AKA Digital Ranch Interactive). This is an HL2:OB mod that has served as a prototype for a commercial release we are currently in the final stages of preparing. It is playable though we have not been supporting it for several months as we've focused all of our efforts on the commercial product. The commercial release is slated for March 1, 2011 only on Steam. It is a fast-paced multiplayer game with 12 playable classes including 3 dinosaurs. You've played World War II games...but have you played a World War II game with dinosaurs?

Nazis. Dinosaurs. Someone has finally put them together in a First Person Shooter.

Posted by c_b_fofep on Nov 12th, 2009

As part of a general announcement to the gaming community of Dino D-Day, a First Person Shooter we hope to release on Steam in 2010, we've made an HL2 mod version of the game available on ModDB. We invite community feedback which will be invaluable as we continue to develop the commercial release of the game!

We're making this mod available to the community to generate excitement around the game of course, but also to open the development process up to the mod/gamer community. By way of introduction, let me first tell you all that this is our first foray into this type of video game development. I myself moved to Los Angeles seven years ago to be a filmmaker. After producing some documentary television series I got hooked up with Valve and suddenly found myself thrust into the world of video game development.

Transforming oneself from a television producer into a game designer is no easy task and I give a lot of credit to the modding community for helping the Dino D-Day team (and especially me) make the jump. I didn't have an ounce of experience in modding or game design before taking on this project, yet with tutorials, tutorials, and general modding community support I'm now a semi-competant game programmer and designer.

The mod is basically a "prototype" for the full game. In it we endeavored to go through the process of building and laying out levels, coding some basic weapons and AI, inserting custom models and animations, and giving a basic sense of story. The full game will of course be longer and more ambitious but this should give you a general feel of what we're going for.

Hopefully making this mod available to the community and opening up the development process is a way for the Dino D-Day team to give back. We invite your open and honest criticism. We'll make regular reports on our progress and hopefully make you all feel a part of the development process.

I look forward to your input. Until then, go kill some Nazi dinosaurs!

Game Designer

I played it and it was very fun. A few things I'd like to note- the various stuff strewn around the battlefield make it look nice, but can sometimes get in the way of movement. In the bit with the T-rex it seemed a bit too hard- you have infinitely respawning enemies while others shoot you and an invincible one attacks you. This would be alright, but getting the t-rex to crash into the bridge without you under the bridge at the time seemed very hard, and I was unable to do it even when running away at the last second- the t-rex just stops short. I managed to kill us both several times, but ended up giving up in the end. I'll give it another try, but I still think it's too challenging, especially for so early on.

Managed to finish it now, but it still took around 5-10 tries to defeat the first boss, which seems slightly high. At the moment you have to have pretty much perfect timing, and that's too much to ask so early in a game, especially with all the distractions. Make it slightly easier please.

I love it, but I just can't put this together. When facing three of the four cardinal directions I get normal framerates but when facing the fourth the game becomes abysmally slow. It doesn't matter if there's a jungle full of dinosaurs or a single polygon stone wall in that direction, but it's always that specific direction. I can run Half Life 2 ep 2 and other mods with fine framerates, and I even turned all of the settings to the lowest possible, but it makes no difference. This is a very saddening turn of events for me when this appears to be such an awesome mod.

The dinos were very well done. They looked great and the AI seemed to work very well for them.

The level design was horrid. Sew your displacements! On the first map I actually could get out of the map and did without trying. Stretched textures all over the place. Props not being lit right. Weird shadows.

The pistol could be fired like a machine gun and it seemed a little skinny, but the texture on it was amazing.
Oh, I want to point out your wood texture on the thing that blew up was great.

Check a collision model on one of your trains on the second level. I could walk into part of it.

I lol'd when the guts thing started. It wasn't very good, but the idea is hilarious.

Please do not make us look at the story in little boxes. They didn't scroll right and I didn't even bother to read them. I like to read too.

With some work this could turn out to be pretty good.

Fun concept, fun to play, implementation needs a little polish, especially audio. While I can certainly understand using HL2:Ep2 sounds as placeholders, many of the custom sounds are of poor quality, or, in the case of the T-rex's roar, sound weak. Of course, this IS a W.I.P., so I'm sure you're on that. Mapping is above average, terrain is good, though it could use a little extra clutter and detail. The only other thing is the Nazi AI, I don't know if you tweaked the Combine AI or not, but it felt like I was playing an old Medal of Honor game. It may just be that the node system in the maps needs to be expanded, don't forget to go back and add cover points and all that jazz.

Anyway, all in all a good demo release, I'm definitely looking forward to more.

"looks sick, therefor not downloading now.
even the idea is sick "

I'm pretty sure that means

looks cool, therefor I AM DOWNLOADING NOW.

Even the Idea is cool!

It's a play on words.

Personally, I felt the mod was pretty bad, right from the start. Alot of gun sounds are stolen from DOD or I've heard in FPSB submissions. The first level is horribly unoptimized, looking behind me, I have 70 FPS, looking infront of me (where you're supposed to move on) I get about 5-10 FPS.

For some reason, when the Germans fire the MP40, it sounds like the SMG from Half-life 2

but when I fire it, it sounds totally different.

For whatever reason the colt holds 18 rounds instead of 7 (8 if one chambered)

Headshots seem to do absolutely nothing from my experience, maybe just my bad luck.

The Grenade has no selection icon on the hud.

The MP40 uses the Thompson on the hud GUI. I assume because the gun icons are generic, but it would have been a nice touch and shows the lack of attention to detail.

Honestly, I stopped playing shortly, the lag was too much and everything gave me a very bad taste in my mouth.

Maybe other people will like the mod/soon to be game but I honestly did not like it, I felt the idea was cool but it was executed horribly.

Amazing concept, and it looks great in a lot of ways, but there's a lot to be improved.

Ok first - level design could be so much better. Don't place ammo and health randomly across the level, but in places that makes sense. You want the level to naturally funnel the player in the right direction, and I got confused several times where I needed to go. I even managed to walk outside the map once, and fall to my death, lol.

The dinosaurs look great, until they have to turn around. Spinning around with static legs just simply doesn't look good, lol. And a quick tip, I think the general gameplay would benefit from more aggressive, but easier to kill, dinosaurs. Right now they have tons of health but are just standing around most of the time, not actually attacking you.

HUD could be greatly improved, it's hard to see how much health or ammo you have left in combat.

Make sure you tweak the gun mag sizes for historical accuracy... I know this isn't trying to be a very realistic mod, and neither should it be, but it's a little thing that can easily tick you off.

When you see the nazis releasing dinosaurs from the trains, you get a good feel for what's to come, but I wasted like half my ammo trying to kill one of those nazis unsuccessfully. You need to make a natural boundary in those situations, some sort of bullet proof glass perhaps? Use your imagination.

Hearing the HL2 SMG sounds were very distracting, and the gun sounds were eerily similar to DOD.

But keep up the good work, enjoyed it all in all.

Thanks iQue, very good notes. Gun sounds WERE DoD so you got us there. We spent almost no time working on sound design on this but the commercial release will of course have a professional sound design pass. I agree with the level design criticism too...I'll be going into that some more in a bigger post.

NOTE: This is going to have to be split across three posts due to the length of the comment. I apologize and hope I don't get accused of spamming. That is not my intent.

This is my first ever post here, so uhh... yeah.

I played your demo, and I think it has a lot of potential! I'm kind of excited now. I'm going to give you critiques of the game in a walkthrough fashion. In other words, these are the notes I made as I moved from beginning to end.

1.) Opening Intro: I like how I can hit the Esc key and still interact with the dialog box that pops up. Obviously there are no enemies when the game starts, so there was nothing to worry about. However, I was at first worried that I would get ambushed if I stood around and read the dialog. I hit Esc and was pleasantly surprised when I could still interact with it. Nice.

2.) As DuckSauce mentioned, the injured/confused/shellshocked guys threw me off at first. Their “invincibility” wasn’t what I expected. I understand they add ambiance, but I wasted ammo on them thinking they were enemy. While the intent was nice, making them fragable would have been more realistic and less confusing.

3.) As I exited the train cars to greet the triceratops, there was one instance when the tric’ came towards my but seemed to get “stuck” in mid-air. There’s a boulder in front as you exit the car, and it seemed like the tric’ tried to climb it but ended up hovering above the ground, not moving. It was rather strange. I couldn’t duplicate it in later attempts, though it still appeared to be hovering slightly above the ground.

4.) There was an instance where I got up top on the train tracks and hid behind a car and fired at Nazi soldiers looking away from me. (They didn’t notice me.) I kept loading bullets into them but they wouldn’t die. It wasn’t until I left my cover and they saw me that my bullets did any damage. Not sure why.

lostraven Nov 15 2009 says:

5.) There’s a way to get stuck on this map. It’s difficult to explain, but basically, if you get on top of the train cars and hop along all the way back to the first car you entered at the beginning… then drop down between the cliff and the train car, you get stuck.

6.) While walking along the top of the train car, I reached an invisible barrier preventing me from moving forward. (To the next scene I assume.) I found this out the hard way because I spent twenty minutes trying to figure our where to go next. (See Item 7.)

You should consider making it impossible to cross. Maybe make one of the train cars damaged with a protrusion of medal blocking the approach to the invisible barrier. Also consider directing the player towards the train doors.

7.) I was lost on where to go. I partially blame the choice made to make the doors push doors and not conventional doors that you use the “E” button to open. I first tried opening all the doors with “E” and failed. That’s when I thought maybe I needed to walk across the top of the train cars to get to the next scene. I was wrong and thoroughly confused. Me and my roommate tried to work out where to go next. We eventually figured out the doors push open, but not without a lot of experimentation. I didn’t like this feature at all. While realistic, the “E” key is ingrained into me for utilizing things. Please consider changing this.

8.) The raptors were very vicious on normal difficulty. I eventually learned to take higher ground, but then I found they could jump. I soon learned that just getting the heck out of the raptor/mine pit as quick as possible was the thing to do. It was very difficult.

(8. Cont.) Also, there’s a spot where you can simply just watch the raptors auto-spawn continuously. I understand the intent, but it’s easy for a noob to waste ammo here before they realize “OMFG auto-spawn raptors run don’t fall!!!” If you feel you MUST keep the auto-spawn raptors, at least hide the spawn point with an unreachable structure.

Also, there’s a spot where you can simply just watch the raptors auto-spawn continuously. 9.) On this level, there is one, maybe two ways to get stuck. The first way is to get up top to the railway, crawl under the car junction, then follow the space between the cliff and train cars all the way to the bridge. If you jump down from this point, you land behind the bridge, getting stuck.

I didn’t try it in full, but there may be another way to get stuck. I got on top of the train cars by jumping down from the cliffs on to the top of the car. I took a little damage in the process, but thought it was part of what I needed to do. I made my way to the last car to see a pretty messy section of the map. I could see the edge of the map with nothing but clouds, and the rail just stopped in mid-air. I tried jumping down to the bottom, only to die. I only had a little life when I did it. I don’t know if a character with full health could sustain that kind of a fall, but if they can, they may get stuck down there. Consider preventing players from getting either on top of the train or, if nothing else, reaching the end of the unfinished track.

10.) I found that while I was on top of the car, I could drop down between two cars and enter the door that goes back to Part one of the stage. When I tried to go through the door to go back to level one, I received a memory error. “The instructions at ‘0x10ea2e3f’ referenced memory at ‘0x0e940454’. The memory could not be ‘read’.” I assume that you MUST prevent players from looping back to the stage. If you can’t, consider having the door become inoperable upon exit.

In all, I’m excited to see more of this game. However, there are plenty of bugs to work out yet. I hope you end up using unique sounds for the raptors and tyrannosaur. The models look great. OH! Some of the soldiers are like steel; they can take a ton of bullets before they die unless hit in the head. Not sure if this is positive or negative yet.
