Dino D-Day is an exciting new First Person Shooter from 800 North (AKA Digital Ranch Interactive). This is an HL2:OB mod that has served as a prototype for a commercial release we are currently in the final stages of preparing. It is playable though we have not been supporting it for several months as we've focused all of our efforts on the commercial product. The commercial release is slated for March 1, 2011 only on Steam. It is a fast-paced multiplayer game with 12 playable classes including 3 dinosaurs. You've played World War II games...but have you played a World War II game with dinosaurs?

Nazis. Dinosaurs. Someone has finally put them together in a First Person Shooter.

Posted by c_b_fofep on Nov 12th, 2009

As part of a general announcement to the gaming community of Dino D-Day, a First Person Shooter we hope to release on Steam in 2010, we've made an HL2 mod version of the game available on ModDB. We invite community feedback which will be invaluable as we continue to develop the commercial release of the game!

We're making this mod available to the community to generate excitement around the game of course, but also to open the development process up to the mod/gamer community. By way of introduction, let me first tell you all that this is our first foray into this type of video game development. I myself moved to Los Angeles seven years ago to be a filmmaker. After producing some documentary television series I got hooked up with Valve and suddenly found myself thrust into the world of video game development.

Transforming oneself from a television producer into a game designer is no easy task and I give a lot of credit to the modding community for helping the Dino D-Day team (and especially me) make the jump. I didn't have an ounce of experience in modding or game design before taking on this project, yet with tutorials, tutorials, and general modding community support I'm now a semi-competant game programmer and designer.

The mod is basically a "prototype" for the full game. In it we endeavored to go through the process of building and laying out levels, coding some basic weapons and AI, inserting custom models and animations, and giving a basic sense of story. The full game will of course be longer and more ambitious but this should give you a general feel of what we're going for.

Hopefully making this mod available to the community and opening up the development process is a way for the Dino D-Day team to give back. We invite your open and honest criticism. We'll make regular reports on our progress and hopefully make you all feel a part of the development process.

I look forward to your input. Until then, go kill some Nazi dinosaurs!

T'was fun I guess, tried hard at first, germans took 2 or 3 headshots to kill with the 2nd weapon... errr yeah I quickly put the difficulty on normal then xD Hard was a bit... too hard! The difference between the two is immense. Without alot of healthkits and alot of ammo for the best weapon even normal was pretty difficult, but still managed to win it with about a round of ammo left for that weapon(Garand it's called?)

I liked the HUD, but obviously not the sprint part... well there seem to be several things like that are obviously unfinished, no hindering bugs though which is good. Looking forward to see how this will turn out as a commercial game!

Here's abit of extra feedback:
1. The garand while it normally can't be reloaded unless out of ammo CAN be reloaded midway by switching to another weapon, firing one shot, reloading that and then when you switch back the Garand will have also reloaded, a nifty little bug that I used to my advantage xD

2. When about to go out of the train where one of the german soldiers is doing something weird(maybe's he scared I dunno... he doesn't react to me at all so I shot him) one time I got back to that area, I tried crouch jumping on the ledge to the right, when you do this you CAN jump on the ledge, might wanna fix that since people could bypass the first dinosaur entirely by crouchjumping.

3. The GUTS mode seems completely useless to me, with a FOV of 90(I think) the hands were barely even visible when punching unless hitting something I also didn't get to use it with any satisfiable result, it seems like a random function right now so possibly disable it for the first "episode" in the full game if it takes so long to charge it that it's full when you already passed that level>.>, also the keybind for it doesn't seem to be in the keys menu, might wanna fix that :)

Anyway Thumbs up for the good idea and the interesting idea.

Here's 2 things I forgot:
1. Sometimes I don't pickup stuff automatically and have to push E, other times it does pick them up automatically(healthkits always worked automatically).

2. When picking up stuff, sometimes the HUD History Resource is visible on the top left, seems like the entry was changed/deleted in the HudLayout.res but the HUD element wasn't deleted in the code, causing it to render at 0,0.

Also seems the Garand reload bug works also without actually reloading another weapon, just shoot it a few times, switch to another weapon, wait a few seconds, switch back and it's reloaded 0_o

Oh and last but not least, I mounted 218 for my second playthrough, encountered no problems, so either HL2:EP2 is being mounted in the code as well or there is no dependency on Orange Box games. I posted a more detail description about this at the comments on the download!
Non Orange Box owners "should" be able to play this mod just fine!

Thanks for the comments...and I agree! GUTS mode was one of the first things I coded so it's not done particularly well -- it's sort of half-implemented in the mod. It's kind of a slippery gameplay element that we don't have a handle on quite yet -- thus I left it unfinished. I probably should have disabled it as you suggested. Oh well...thanks for the feedback!

DuckSauce Nov 13 2009 replied:

nah it's fine it's here for the mod version, but if there's little use for it in the first level in the full game then remove it from that first level, helps slowly introduce things and you cause less confusion.

Now you can get some feedback on it though without having the same things being expected from it then a full commercial game, that's why you put it up here in the first place ain't it? :)

I liked GUTS, I used it on the little bitey ones and was punching them miles.

Also couple of smalls bugs, when GUTS runs out and you switch to a diff wep, you can just press q and get back in GUTS mode.

Secondly once youve used all your greades you can still switch to it and hold a grenade, just not throw it.

All in all a great teaser!

I agree, this made my Friday very cool. Now I have something else to hype about. There's nothing better than Nazi Dinasaurs.. and boxing a T-Rex!

I'm curious if there will be a storyline/campaign and voiced dialogue like a fully developed single player game?

The final version of the game will definitely have dialogue, cinematics, etc. In fact, I'm hoping that will be one of the strong suits...my background is in filmmaking after all! We didn't spend anytime on that in the mod because the technical aspects of game design were much more important for us to sort out given our (and really my) total ignorance at the beginning of the process. Our primary goal with this was a functional game with some loose sense of story.

Looks very nice- I'll download it as soon as I get the chance.

Still looking at the trailer it seems very American focused- something which is far too common in WW2 games. I'm not saying you should change the trailer or change the game much, just it'd be nice to see some allied British/Australian/Canadian/European soldiers in game, and if you do multiplayer or co-op let you play as them perhaps.

I know how you feel, but the way he's portraying it is very "American" so to speak. The propaganda theme fits American involvement.

NullSoldier Nov 13 2009 replied:

Wow, I think you are missing the entire feel that the developers are portraying. Do you seriously not get it?

They are mixing two comedic elements which are the 40's World War American war advertisements and Nazi Dinasaurs. It makes it quiet hilarious mixing two very funny elements together.

Strange_guy Nov 13 2009 replied:

I hadn't played it by that point, as I said.

Having not realised I'd end up punching a triceratops to death I took the game a bit too seriously, so maybe I was wrong.

I think its meant to be entirely satirical...the american hero coming in and fighting an evil nazi t-rex with his fists.

completed the level and think its awesome. Although while running around the ruins (after the dinos were released from the train) i found that if i stand still on the far side dinos appear (spawn) next to me, could you put a hole in the cliff or small cave entrance where they can spawn from.

Who said games need to be realistic, in fact how many games are?
Personally I think its a great idea for a game and I look forward to the full version. it sort of has a time splitters feel to it, which is a good thing.

Its a fun concept, but this mod/game does need abit of polishing. What especially annoyed me was the respawning soldiers and raptors, they just keep on comming. Or do they stop respawning after X amount of times?
Also you might wanna make the game goals abit more clear, something like " move to the river and kill trex" would have made it abit more clear.

Judging from the whole idea of the mod, the concept is so ridiculous it really can't fail :P ...

But i can't help but think that the dinosaurs lack integration with the nazis. There really is nothing that connects them to the nazis. However, if you put helmets on them, or had some weird stormtrooper/dino calvary going on it would be easier to connect the two ...

from the video it sorta looks as if the dinosaurs and nazis were just thrown in together with no sense of cooperation :P ...
