A deserted island... a lost man... memories of a fatal crash... a book written by a dying explorer. Dear Esther is a ghost story told using first-person gaming technologies. Rather than traditional gameplay, the focus here is on exploration, uncovering the mystery of the island, of who you are and why you are here. Fragments of story are randomly triggered by moving around the environments, making every telling unique. Features a stunning, specially commissioned soundtrack. Forget the normal rules of play; if nothing seems real here, it's because it may just be all a delusion. What is the significance of the aerial - What happened on the motorway - is the island real or imagined - who is Esther and why has she chosen to summon you here? The answers are out there, on the lost beach and the tunnels under the island. Or then again, they may just not be, after all...

It is quite too late to be making a review of Dear Esther by the Chineseroom, but seeing as there are no reviews I decided to make a quick breakdown of this wonderful mod. Check out there latest game Korsakovia too if you haven't already.

So what is Dear Esther you might ask? First of all, it's not a puzzle game, no it's not a shooter either, nor a plat former. Instead Dear Esther is more of a story based narrative, that allows you to interact with the world and it's environment. There are no enemies to fight. You basically just walk around the island, revealing bits and bits of narration as you progress until the game ends. If you are interested in a unique and refreshing mod this mod is a must play mainly because Dear Esther does this new concept so well.

I cannot spoil much of the game but I can say you might be confused when you eventually finish the game. However, I believe what you don't know is what makes this mod so great. You are (Hopefully) compelled to unlock the secrets of your mysterious surroundings and who you are. This is what makes Dear Esther so interesting and unique, the game pressures you to discover what's going on in your world and unless you have the attention span of a rat, the game will captivate you and it's extremely haunting to witness. This game is pretty much allowed to be placed in the horror genre because the player will not know what to expect next.

Who you are, where you are, what is going on, are many questions you will ask when you're playing.

The island, (Supposedly) is also where the mod takes place, and it looks absolutely stunning. You will see and encounter a lot while you're on the island and you ever never told why it's there, or whats there, or whatever. The game questions you a lot and it's up to you to piece together the clues.

Ultimately, Dear Esther succeeds in it's goal. It does what it was meant to do; to haunt you, question you, compel you, and provide us with a mysterious story. Unfortunately, this game is not for everybody but those of you who love atmosphere and story, this game is like a love letter.

Pros:
-Haunting, creepy, atmosphere
-Intriguing story
-Great tone and pace
-Encounter many interesting settings
-Great soundtrack and voice acting.

Cons:
-Might not be enjoyable by everyone
-Narration might get buggy and sometimes its difficult to hear him.

I loved this mod, it only took me about an hour to complete but I know I missed some paths. Gonna play it again tonight when I get off work.

I hope there are additions to this mod. Another perspective or more interaction would be cool.
