Dead before Dawn 2 DC loading poster

New Dawn is here

This is Hank Kowalski, head of security of the Crossroads Mall. As head of security I have a responsability for our customers and, of course for Jason and Billy. So I'm glad to informing you guys about the new and final update of my favourite Left 4 Dead 2 Campaign "Dead before Dawn 2".

YES, you can mount your Chainsaw against the infected freaks once again, and bully crazy shopkeepers. We optimized all scripts, and we did some cosmetic changes and handled little issues. This version is the "bloody" final one. After Left 4 Dead 1 was released, Dead before Dawn started in February 2008 as one-man-project. Stephan Botha: the former owner of promoted our campaign alot, so we are glad that finally Dead before Dawn returned on its roots. Without L4Dmods DbD wouldn't be so great like it is.

We would like to thank all community contributors who helped us out the last four years and we are proud to be involved in such a great Left 4 Dead Community which supported us so much.

The night is the darkest before the dawn and I promise you.. the dawn is coming. Come to the Crossroads Mall if you wanna live. This is Hank Kowalski, head of security.
Over and out."

No Zombies, no guns, no Zoey.. only Portals

We would like to announce our new project for Valves Portal 2: "CosmiscD's The Core". We stick as team once again together and creating a brandnew mod. Our favourite musican "CosmicD" (the Hans Zimmer of all custom Games) created this one. "The Core" is a custom campaign for Portal 2 and has custom puzzles centered around the manipulation of a constant inanimate companion testing element (cube and sphere).

Right now you are able to play Version 1.1. But the whole Mod gets a new look.

The Dead Before Dawn sound fix resolves some issues people have been having with sounds from the sacrifice DLC. Note: although it is a "hotfix", it is...

I got to the third map and cant beat it, mainly due to bot teammates being dumb as usual (I think it might also be because I disabled the bots' ability to shoot through allies), but from what Ive seen, it looks like a lot of work was put into the campaign. Now I just need to find a server with it and get friends to help out.

Also, would it be possible to add subtitles to the custom voiced dialogue? Sometimes with all of the zombies and shooting I cant hear what theyre saying and what Im supposed to do next.

I don't think any of the modders have endeavored to really try to find out to make subtitles. It would have been nice if this was just an entity that you can add to all the voice triggers but it's not that simple. you need scenes and a special kind of script for it. And I don't even know if that is pluggable. Perhaps once valve takes the time to document it or someone brilliant comes up with it on the valve wiki, it could be done.

Although chances of me working solo on the campaign after this release are slim.

Yeah I havent seen any other campaigns with custom subtitles either. It might be possible to detect those specific events with a sourcemod plugin and have it print hint text, but ofc Im not a plugin coder so idk what the limitations there would be.

Anyways Im gonna try this on easy now and see if I can stop 50 zombies from getting through the door by myself, since the bots always let like 20 through and get surrounded.

Thanks for the release.

Do we have to do snd_rebuildaudiocache again for Director's Cut if we have the default DBD?

Exinjeru Feb 15 2011 replied:

The rebuildaudiocache command doesn't work anymore, valve broke it and realized they had to do something, so they made custom maps load sounds the correct way like they should have originally.

So now basically all old maps have broken customs sounds, I believe DBD is fine because it was fixed right after valve broke everything.

Yes, we have been struggling in the l4d1 version with this but when we published the l4d2 version it was never an issue. Moreover the sacrifice update fixed the issue also for the l4d1 version which we re-uploaded imediately when the update to l4d was released.

It was a much needed update because we also had some scripts that prevented sacrifice sounds from playing, so we created an audio update fix that swat both flies at the same time.

Well, we decided to wait 2 weeks. We want a clean release, It just doesnt make sense to release this now while another big custom campaign release is around the corner for l4d2.

Bummer. That's really unfortunate to be delayed just for some random mod, but I suppose it will give you guys more time for bug I have to find something else to do for two weeks.

but it's also becoes we hold IHM in the highest regard, and you have to agree that theres not so much people really playing custom mods and somehow it feels wrong for us to get in their way. It shouldn't matter because the mods are both free but you know the boss is a true marketeer :) and the team has always benifited from this :)

Well actually after thinking about it I decided you were just using strategy, because if you released before they did, then their mod would take players away from yours, yet if you did the opposite then...

It's not so much about stealing players. It's more about the fact that ihm has it's first release on l4d2 and players are just more interested in that. We would deliberately swamp our release if we did it at the same time. DBD2 was already on l4d2 and the director's cut would benifit from more exposure if we just wait 2 weeks. At least we do some behind the scenes check and often notice that not so much players in the friendslist are always fully interested in playing a custom campaign.

SO all these factors combined : we just decided to wait.

Highest Rated (3 agree) 10/10

You ask me, why was rating Dead Before Dawn with 10/10? Well, just play it and you will agree with my rating! Dead Before Dawn is one of the biggest projects a Source-game has ever seen. Over a half of a decade in development and finally released. I played the L4D1 and L4D2 version and it's a giant step between both titles. Epic scripts, epic events, epic maps and a fully epic style! The music rocks and the atmosphere of the Zack Snyder-Movie is perfect caught in this mall! But never mind. Don't…
