The American 2nd Ranger battalion is assigned to capture Bergstein and take the adjacent strategic position known as Hill 400 which serves as an artillery station overlooking the entire Hürtgen forest, which is heavily fortified and defended by elements of the 272nd Volksgrenadier division.
