D-day! a mod that needs no introduction... but just in case:

D-day is a Would War II TC mod for the highly popular game Red Alert 2: Yuri’s Revenge, is the largest & longest running mod for RA2 to date. With hundreds of highly detailed & accurate units from pre World War 2 to a hypothetical post war. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to fight the good fight on land, sea & air. There are eight playable countries in D-day, as well as several other non-playable ones.

The playable sides are:

  • America
  • Great Britain
  • France
  • Soviet Union
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Hungary
  • Japan

The pride of D-day is the DTX terrain, which completely changes RA2’s cartoony look into a gritty WW2 landscape that has been heavily researched to create an authentic atmosphere. D-day also features maps of such places as Berlin, Stalingrad, Kursk, El Almain & even New York! Created using battlefield maps & period photos to get the highest accuracy possible.

This news post looks at the American Post-War family of vehicles based on the M41 chassis. The M41 Bulldog and M42 Duster have actually been in D-day for sometime, however their voxels were very inaccurate and in desperate need of replacing. As I was redoing them I thought I'd also make several other units based on the M41 too (including some non-American variants that I'll post at a later time :P ).

If you want to see more information and pictures on any of these units click on the images to go to their D-day wiki pages.

M41 Walker Bulldog

Designed to replace the M24 Chaffee development started in 1947 on the T37, which used a new experimental rangefinder and British fire control system. While advantageous this experimental system was deemed too complex and in need of further development. With the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 the need for a new tank to replace the M24 Chaffee was even greater as it was struggling to defend against the enemy T-34/85 tanks. So work quickly moved onto the T41E1 which used a new rounder turret and simplified rangefinder, it was rushed into production in 1951 as the M41 Little Bulldog. It was soon renamed the Walker Bulldog after US Army General Walton Walker who died in a traffic accident in 1950 while in Korea.

M41A1 Walker Bulldog

The M41 Walker Bulldog was rushed into production in 1951 to fight in the Korean War, some had even arrived in Korea before official testing had finished and the design standardised. Because of this the design suffered from several flaws, the M41A1 was put into production in 1954 in hopes to fix these issues. The original electrical turret traverse system was deemed to slow and so it was replaced in the M41A1 with a new hydraulic system which not only increased the turret's rate of turn but was also more compact and allowed more rounds to be stored in the turret. Another problem was that debris could get stuck between the tracks and fenders and cause the tracks to be thrown off the wheels and damage the tank. To fix this the side skirts were removed, track defectors were added under the fenders and the fenders were also rounded off on the ends. Over 2,300 M41A1 Walker Bulldog's were built and used until 1969 when it was replaced by the M551 Sheridan. Many were then sold to other countries where they were further upgraded with bigger guns and more powerful engines, some of these tanks are still in service today.

M42 Duster

The M42 Duster was designed in 1952 to replace the M19. The twin 40mm Bofors guns used on the M19 were still an effective anti-aircraft weapon system though, so the M41 was simply modified to use the turret from the M19. In 1963 the M42 was removed from front line duty and replaced with the medium range HAWK missile system. However in the 1966 the US Army in Vietnam lacked any close anti-air defense and so the M42 was recalled back into service, the North Vietnamese air force however never became a threat. The M42 was instead used to great success as a ground support vehicle, its 40mm guns being able to deal heavy damage to unarmoured targets.

M44

Built to replace the M41 in 1953, the M44 was based on a reversed M41 chassis with the engine at the front and the fighting compartment at the back. It used the same 155mm howitzer as the M41 but instead of being in the open it was now placed within an armoured crew compartment.

M52
User Posted Image

Development of the M52 started in 1951 along with the M44. Both used the same chassis, which was modified from the M41. Unlike the M44 the M52 used a fully inclosed turret equipped with a nuclear, biological and chemical protection system so it could be used on a contaminated battlefield. Development dragged on for several years an went thorough several prototypes. One of which put the ventilation system next to the engine exhaust, which resulted in dangerous level of carbon monoxide being vented into the turret! By 1955 all the problems were worked out and the the M52 was put into production. Over 680 were built and many were later sold to other countries who still use them today.

I haven't been on moddb a couple of months now. It is amazing the amount of progress you made. The images of the re-textured terrain, units, and new structures you posted are absolutely stunning and I can't wait to try the new version of D-Day (downloading as we speak)

Hey Mig I have a suggestion!
Can you remove the line on the M1 Garand infantry unit "Army's Finest here!" when you've selected to play as Marines? Just weirded out by that. Though its not that important.

Oh and when are you planning on adding Japan? It'll be cool to fight against with when I pick American Marines, specially playing it on Wake Island.

Pretty nice work there! Keep it up. 10/10 :)

Sorry but saved games not working is an issue with Ares & is out of my control. The Ares team do plan to fix the problem but it will probably take even longer then v3.8.

Hello Mig,

I have a couple of questions for you. Will the other varieties of infantry (Machinepistol equipped etc) be recruitable in later versions of the mod?

Will you be including some more units in the period skirmishes? Stugs would be a great addition for the Germans as an alternative to the Marder. Especially once they've had the longer 75 put in. I've noticed the Germans seem to lean more to the 1940-41 kit during their early game rather than the 42 era stuff. Great, if you fancy simulating an action in 1941. But this trend leaves them at quite a disadvantage against the Soviets with their heavier KVs and model-42 T34s. Perhaps an upgrade for the Pz. IV D (or is it an F1?) to the IV F2 (75mm KwK 40 L/43) would be in order. Historically speaking the Germans did precisely that to counter the Soviet heavies in 1942. It would do a lot to bridge the gap between the present Pz. IV in the early game and the Ausf. H/J in 43 onwards. The Panzer III could do with an upgrade to the longer 50mm gun as well for the same reasons.

Having said all that It can be fun rushing in an MCV to set up a PAK-Front though.

Now, I've played a good few skirmishes in a number of different modes: (incl. "Total War" and although you do get most of these units in that mode you really don't get too far producing them as the enemy will be producing the state-of-the-art heavies instead. Perhaps a kind of "Total-War" per period would work? Although, I must admit, I do prefer things being more manageable.

Yes More infantry types are planed, such as machine pistols, heavy machine guns, mortars, snipers, medics & spies. Making the graphics for them is a difficult & lengthy processes tho so I cant say when they will be added.

I have actually been thinking about adding infantry support type units such as the Stug, Brummbär, Kv-2, SU-122, M4 105mm & British CS tanks. Which would be used like short ranged direct fire artillery.

The Panzer IV D actually used to be the F2 variant but I downgraded it for various reasons, looking at it's competition now tho maybe it should go back to the F2. Yes the Panzer III could probably do with an upgrade too.

I already plan on adding a mini Total War mode for each time period. It's a low priority atm but it will hopefully make it into v3.8.

Many thanks for the speedy and detailed reply. I look forward to all of these additions.

Adding in infantry cs tanks like the StuH (Sturmhaubitze - Stug III with a 10,5cm Howitzer), would be a good idea. The Stummel variant to start off with for the early war (39-41 sort of timeframe) and then the StuH for 41-42. Stug IIIs and IVs would be good and (later especially) cheaper alternatives to medium tanks and TDs (as in reality). F2 Variant of the Panzer IV as an upgrade (for the IVD) to simulate innovations in 42 would be a good thing to have and the upgrade for the Pz III also.

I'm loving the game by the way. You have done a sterling job!

D-Day "See You On The Beach" ****: An Invasion Ten Years In The Waiting D-Day is a project that has been in the works longer than some players have been playing Yuri's Revenge. Since the time that D-Day began to take shape back in 2002, The West has completed it's "War on terror", an African American was elected as POTUS, the Arab World rose up in revolt and Social media sites took over our lives. Indeed the D-Day mod has been in the works for a long time, but finally through the hard-work of it's…
