Cthulhu is a single-player modification for Half-Life.
It contains 65 maps, 21 new monsters and 14 new weapons.

Aeons ago, Earth was ruled by The Great Old Ones, beings so alien and terrible that merely seeing them would drive most people mad. Before man's ancestors climbed down from the trees, these being were defeated in a war with The Elder Gods.
But their alien nature meant that they could not be slain in any way that we would understand, so they were imprisoned.
And so they wait, patient and potent until the stars are right and they shall walk forth once again and wipe mankind from the face of the Earth.
You play Ranulf Stafford, an occult investigator in Arkham in the year 1928. Drawn into a nightmare chain of events, you find yourself the only thing standing between mankind and the return of Cthulhu, one of the most dreadful of The Great Old Ones.

I got this mod to work on Steam, and I completed it a few days ago, and I must say I was very impressed. The custom NPCs are both fun to fight and creepy (the purple beasts that burst out from inside the cows at the farm which can only be killed by shoving explosive boxes off the second floor and shooting the boxes to make them explode when the monsters are next to them was a very innovative fight and I loved that part), but the use of some of the regular HL1 enemies like the zombies really bugged me, because it could have been an easy process to make the zombies look atleast a little different (hell, a recolor would have been fine), but the fact that they were unchanged bugged me. Other than that, I wish some NPCs were used more often. The gameplay is solid, but not nevolutionary. The story is good, but, really, any game that is based off HP Lovecraft is almost bound to have a good story, but atleast the story in this mod is rather well told. The mod ended on a particular strong note, which left me with good impressions of the mod. The sanity system was good and made me really have to choose wisely when to use my spells, although the "dread name" spell or whatever it was called was rather usless for me, and more spells, like one that sets enemies on fire or freezes them for a few seconds, would have been nice. The animations weren't that good, but they suited the mod well and helped it feel very classic and retro. I was stuck at certain points in the game, not knowing what to do (like in Innsmouth or the City of Yith), but I always figured out what to do sooner or later. My favorite weapon would either be the double barell shotgun, or the spell that blows enemies up. My favorite area was the last part of the City of Yith. My favorite enemy was either the Great Race of Yith or the Cthonians. Overall, I give this mod a 9/10.

OK, as I said I made it to the farm, but the problems have been, and this one has me stuck there..NONE OF THE MONSTERS CAN BE KILLED! I went in loaded for BEAR.. emptied 2-3 hundred bullets, coctails, a stick of dynamite, and over 200 shot gun shells. PLUS the ones that were there. No way to progress. Also none of the stuff you should be able to shatter and or smash can be destroyed in ANY way...

What ever STEAM did they F**KED everything up

K managed to get somewhere with it...had to use noclip in a few places as no glass or anything else that should break would shatter or break, not even with the dynamite...made to Whatley Farms...lol ENOUGH FOR ONE NIGHT.. I have to drive this thing into Cayoucus tonight

same problem, since steam updated last this and most of all of my other mods quit working, of course they deny it was of their doing, but they all worked fine until steam updated their platform.

got it to work. Download the PATCH then save it to (what I did) a folder on the desktop. Went to the steamapps username HL cthulhu folder, copied the entire contense of the patch into the cthulhu folder. It kept asking me if I wanted to overwrite this or that click YES and one time it asked if I wanted to replace or keep both copies of a folder click REPLACE, restart steam and viola. One problem, I can't break through the window on the church of the starry whatever and get into the basement, Tried noclipping and got into the basement that way, found the stupid door, foound the hallway but there were NO STAIRS? so I am assuming that breaking the glass changes the level or the level change in the church basement isn't working.

No zombies in the basement, no stairs either. So there it sticks.
Any one know of a load level list used to warp to the next level in some games?

I tried to play this game using the steam version of Half-Life, but I couldn't get it to work.

What is the proper way to get this mod to work, and does it even work with the steam version of Half-Life?

Download the patch and install it. It should work then. Also if you like this check out their other one "Ctulhu Dark Edges Of The House" Not quite as good as the original, but it is a good giblets and gravy mod. It's all zombies, crack zombies and head crabs, so it has a HL1 feel to it but it is a decent mod.

An incredible mod from start to finish.

Among my favorite half-life mods of all time. :)
