Cthulhu is a single-player modification for Half-Life.
It contains 65 maps, 21 new monsters and 14 new weapons.

Aeons ago, Earth was ruled by The Great Old Ones, beings so alien and terrible that merely seeing them would drive most people mad. Before man's ancestors climbed down from the trees, these being were defeated in a war with The Elder Gods.
But their alien nature meant that they could not be slain in any way that we would understand, so they were imprisoned.
And so they wait, patient and potent until the stars are right and they shall walk forth once again and wipe mankind from the face of the Earth.
You play Ranulf Stafford, an occult investigator in Arkham in the year 1928. Drawn into a nightmare chain of events, you find yourself the only thing standing between mankind and the return of Cthulhu, one of the most dreadful of The Great Old Ones.

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen! ZikShadow here again to present to you a simply made HD pack for the classic mod Cthulhu!

I think i played the mod back around 2010-ish, sort of about a year before i decided to make stuff up to make it look better.

The mod overall is okay, i liked the fact that it tried to grab some of the Lovecraft's cosmic horror over despite the many problems that sort-of buggers around the mod.

It is unfortunate that the level design is overall pretty terrible even by HL's nineties standards, the models are mixed up, the coding screwed (had to even remove the shotgun's muzzleflash because of that), and many of the gameplay decisions is just baffling to me.

But hey! I can see a lot of love and imagination put to this mod, even if the lack of skills really stand out during gameplay.

Reminds me of the days i started making levels for Cry of Fear. I guess that's one of the few reasons i start finishing this remod again the other day.

But yeah, almost 5 years since this began, and now the making of has ceased.

I hope you all can enjoy the mod.

Do not summon up that which you cannot put down.

I played this mod less than a year ago, and I thought I might as well review it while its still rather fresh in my mind. This wasn't the best Half-Life mod that I've played, but its variety of custom monsters and unique and pretty well-crafted environments (especially to a Lovecraft fan like myself) make it worth investigating due to its originality as a mod. I have heard people say that this mod is frustrating, but even though I agree that finding your way through the same-y alleys of Innsmouth or sewers of the Great City was a chore, it wasn't parts like that which made me remember this mod. It was parts like exploring an abandonded digsite, fighting Dagon, blasting Yithians, scaling cliffs while under attack by a flying/floating monster (which I can't remember what it was intended to be; an interpretation of the Shoggoth, maybe?), facing off with the invisible Dunwich Horror, running around stabbing cultists, and all the other Lovecraftian style things that made me feel like I was playing a less-scary version of Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth on the GoldSrc engine (which was another game I played around that time).

The story was conveyed well enough, altough some parts may be confusing for people who have never read Lovecraft. I understood the self-contained story that the mod told, and appreciated its classic Lovecraftian ending twist. Everything custom was well-enough modeled and animated for the GoldSrc engine standards, and all weapons felt rather satisfying.

The mod could have been improved a bit by doing simple changes, like by adding better direction in the confusing areas (the Dagon battle comes to mind), making some earlier scenes a bit easier (like in the church, when the player has less experience at playing the game), changing the default Half-Life zombie model to something more Lovecraftian (you want to give the player a good impression when you're introducing the second enemy type) and maybe adding a custom skin to the claw monster from Half-Life to make it seem less out of place when contrasted to all the custom creatures, or having it remodeled as a tentacle or something. Also, the voice acting was often very quiet, to the point that I had difficulty understanding the characters- I even reloaded an old save once so I could re-listen to one of the main character's car-monologues.

Its not like I expect to see such changes actually be integrated, but I hope someone will read this and find some use in my critiques. I gave Cthulhu a 9/10 when I ranked it a year ago, but, upon considering my ranking farther, I see it fit to give it a 8/10. 8.3, to be exact. A great mod, but not perfect. It will definently interest all who play it, as long as they don't run into any glitches (I never did) and those who are lucky enough to get through the game's labyrinths.

Love this mod! Is there a walkthrough some where? I'm afraid I'm lost in Innsmouth and finding it a tad frustrating. I've killed everything I could find so now I can't follow sounds to find anything new.

Whoops - it's been a long while since I checked this page.
The mod comes with a walkthrough text file. It is installed in the mod directory.
Hope this helps!
