The Crystal Universe is ending. Destructive energy is spawning Chaos beings that seek to destroy the once so peaceful place. In the very last moment before the final collapse the greatest crystals use their residual energy to create an avatar. This new crystal must collect the remaining invaluable energy crystals. With these energy crystals the last crystal structures will be able to escape safely to another dimension.

In Crystalline the player controls the character in an abstract universe. While collecting energy crystals the player must avoid the dangerous Chaos beings. Stopping them from dissolving the remaining crystal structures is the last hope of saving the crystalline beings.

Crystalline is a DADIU (The Danish National Academy of Digital, Interactive Entertainment) student project produced in one month and will be published for free at the start of April 2008.

Crystalline is released to the world! We are pleased to give everyone an opportinity to play our small HL2 mod and try what we have been using the last month creating.

Please take note that Crystalline is to be considered a prototype and that a lot of planned features didn't make it into the released game. With only one month and no experienced programmers we had to prioritize a lot. Still we think it has been wonderful to create the game and we hope you will enjoy trying it out.

Game hints:
Due to time constraints the game is largely unballanced and there is no in-game hints to what you must do. But do try the following: collect small crystals to boost your energy. Use this energy to kill Chaos beings and gain points. Collect the large super crystals and bring them to the even larger crystal structures. With three super crystals in the correct color they will disappear and you will gain loads of points. All the large crystal structures are located quite close to the green cloud where you spawn. The game ends when you have lost your last life.

We didn't have time to do all the feedback system (especially a lot of fancy particle systems) and there is no hi-score list. But still do enjoy the casual experience that Crystalline still is.

Oh. That sort of chewing gum. We call that bubble gum here. (Australia)
I was thinking of Wrigley's Extra Sugar-free gum, or anything like it (Eclipse, PK, etc.) since that's what we call chewing gum.

Well, either way, I'm looking forward to the mod :)

Seems pretty interesting. I expect it to play a little bit like fl0w on PS3. Am I right in guessing this will be aimed at a Casual audience? Also, have you thought about an Online/Multiplayer aspect to the game?

Either way, I've added you to my watch list :) Shall be intruiged to see how it all turns out!

Thanks :) We are actually making it a rather casual experience. Our primary idea was to make a darker and rougher take on the "chewing gum aesthetics" you always see in casual titles like Bejewelled, Zuma and Peggle. We still don't know how well we are going to achieve this but we are hard at work to deliver the best result.

Yes, chewing gum aesthetics :-) Try out one of the mentioned casual games and you'll see.

Haha well.. I looked at the video, and I still don't get it. What's "chewing gum" about it? :S
The similarities I see (between peggle and crystalline) are the bright christmas-tree decoration colours and lights.

DX Ball 2 was another one, it was a breakout/arkanoid clone that had a nice visual style, kinda like flame in the reflection on the surface of a lake at midnight. (Well, that sounded kinda...) At least.. I remember that it did. Or maybe it was just its successor? They had nice "particle effects", iirc. I don't know...

Is that what the "chewing gum" aesthetic is? If so.. I don't see it :P how is that chewing gum :S?

Well, googling "chewing gum" instantly reveals a whole bunch of images that pretty much resemble what could be the design aesthetics behind a casual title. Play just a single level of Peggle and you'll see :)

When I wrote "chewing gum aesthetics" in the first place it was not to be taken that serious though. It was meant as a humorous generalisation of the current state of casual titles. All I wanted to point out was our darker and rougher vision for Crystalline. We simply took out most of the chewing gum of the equation ;-)

Thanks for the response! I think I know what you mean by the 'chewing gum' comment - the visual style are all very similar and have that horrible 90's glassy effect applied over simple geometric shapes. Blech! :P PopCap have a lot to answer for, by gum! :D

Also as an interesting note, do you think all games made for PC that can/could natively use the XBox360 controller instantly makes it a Casual Game? That statement aside, I think that Crystalline would probably benefit from a 2 analogue 'Robotron' control system. But maybe rather than have 1 stick for x-y axis motion, 1 stick firing etc. -- perhaps have the 2nd stick control elevation (z-axis motion). Just a thought :)

I don't think that easy conversion for traditional console controller necessarily makes it a casual game. Someone would prove me wrong if I said so :-) But you have a point; it would be easy to do analogue controller sticks for Crystalline. We don't have any shooting though. We are really casual on that part and since we are on pc we will stick with the arrow keys for now :-)

Harimau pointed out that bubble gum aesthetics is a even better phrase for this particular art style. Personally I enjoy many titles using this style and I know that they appeal especially well to many women who make up the largest portion of casual gamers.
