Crates and Barrels is a single-player "minigame" mod for Half-Life 2. It is a unique mod for several reasons, most notably for what it is not: it isn't a shooter (first or third person) - it isn't an RPG, strategy, or adventure game - and it doesn't use the Source game engine. What it is, though, is a collection of mini-games which use the Half-Life 2 characters, objects, and textures in several simple and classic video games that are intended for a few moments of comic relief. Written entirely in Visual Basic 2008 and using Managed DirectX 1.1, it is a first for Half-Life 2 mods. You will need Half-Life 2 installed in order to play this mod, as all game content is loaded as needed during gameplay from the Half-Life 2 GCF files.
This is a short clip of actual gameplay as it stands now. You control the barnacle across the top of the screen. Left mouse button fires gibs, right mouse button deploys the tongue. You need to eat headcrabs with your tongue to replenish your gibs, and capturing the more elusive humans will give you considerably more gibs. But watch out - both the headcrabs and the humans are firing cleavers up at you! You can hide behind the crates, but they can only absorb so much damage before disintegrating.
If you get hit by a cleaver, you lose a life, and the game ends when all of your extra lives are depleted. You get a bonus life every 10,000 points, and as the game progresses, the headcrabs move faster and you start out with fewer crates.
This specific game (one of five that are presently part of the Crates & Barrels mod) is virtually complete at this point, and only needs some final tweaks for gameplay and feedback from the upcoming beta release.
alot of cleavers hit you but you didn't die... and you can shoot and grab?
I'm still tweaking the collision code to get it better, and the cleaver is one of them. Yes, you can shoot gibs and grab with the tongue, but not both at the same time...
The conversations of the characters at the title screen was funny.
