Counter-Strike is a modification (MOD) to the excellent game, Half-Life. It modifies the multiplayer aspects of Half-Life to bring to it a more team-oriented gameplay. Counter-Strike provides the player with an experience that a trained counter-terrorist unit or terrorist unit experiences.
The MOD is team-based featuring one team playing the role of the terrorist and the other team playing the role of the counter-terrorist. Each side has access to different guns and equipment, as well as different abilities. Maps have different goals such as: hostage rescue, assassination, bomb defusion, Terrorist escape, etc.
Weapons include the usual assortment of pistols, shotguns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, grenades, demolition devices. Each side has access to a different subset of weapons so for example only the counter-terrorist can use the M4A1, and only the terrorists can use the AK-47.
We are confident that we've created a MOD quite unlike any other. We hope you will be immersed in the frightening and intense world of Counter-Terrorism.

hello, As of today my server requires the latest version of my mod. Which is released June 8, 2008 PT.
If you do not have the latest please download it so you can play online. Have fun the new version V2 includes a new GUI, More Maps, More sounds ETC.
SO get it quick, So you can play on the official server. Because upgrading is the right thing to do. Youl like v2 alot more then v1 trust me =D

CS is free if you have Half-Life.
just a little add on....
there is much debate over cs being a game or a mod. think of it this way, games; you have to pay for. mods; are usually 99.9% of the time free of charge. thus, cs1.5 and below are mods, but since 1.6 comes with a price tag, it is a game.

garry's mod 10+ is a mod and u hav to pay for it.
i remember when most of the 1.5 servers were chock full of yearning gamers. but then valve wanted everyone go to steam. so naturally with nearly everyone updating, the servers had shit all players if any, which lead to the shutdown of many 1.5 servers - i can still remember the disappointment...
btw, Counter-Strike steam is just another name for cs1.6, and is a game in itself and no longer a mod. 1.6 is basically the term meaning the next instalment of counterstrike, and counterstrike 1.0 for steam is kinda like saying a new instalment. so they've pretty much started a new game whilst at the same time carried cs onto a new level.

I'm confused: what is the difference between this mod, and the "Counter-Strike 1.0 for Steam" mod, and the version of Counter Strike that can be bought on Steam?
doom engine died with doom2, quake engine is it's own engine all on it's own. quake2 engine is based on q1 engine, quake3 is on a heavily revamped base of the quake/quake2 engine. Doom3 was based on quake3 but now is primarily it's own engine seeing as it was completly rewritten. Quake4 engine was based on the doom3 engine obviously. Half-life1 is based on the Quake1 engine with skyboxes, HL2 is a combination of the Quake1 engine, Havok physics, and a lot of their own work. Don't make stuff up just for the purpose of posting, do some research.
Well actually, From Doom 1 to 3, to Q1 to Q4 to HL to HL2, all of them use the Doom engine, extremely modified...
Doom gave birth to Q1 Engine, Q1 gave birth to Q2 and GoldSrc, Q2 gave birth to Q3 Q3 gave birth to Doom3 (here we end with Id), and GoldSrc gave birth to Source... so all of these games have the same roots...

cs 1.6 is still a mod, in fact, every CS and other valve games are mods of HL and HL2, just because you have a cd of it it doesnt mean its a game, every Valve game has a folder called Valve wich is actually Half-Life, sometimes complete, sometimes with only the files te mod need to use...
So, valve are mod makers, they only have three games, HL, HLS and HL2...
