ontra is a freeware modification for Command and Conquer Generals: Zero Hour real-time strategy game. It's a big project started in 2004. It adds many new units as well as numerous new upgrades, new general's powers and buildings. It also adds new sounds, maps, bug fixes, enhanced graphics, and other effects, as well as three new generals.

Features:

  • Introduced Ranking system, in which that certain buildings and units can only be built when a certain general's rank is achieved. Players get awarded for their combat efficiency.
  • 3 New Generals - USA Cybernetic, China Flame and GLA Assault.
  • A.I. is greatly enhanced.
  • Introduction of "Super Units". The limit is 1 per player (like hero units). Super units require 5th rank. Each general has a unique super unit.
  • Neutral Tech Structures reappear after a while after they are destroyed.
  • Deep variety of gameplay tactics and strategies.
  • Wide choice of units, buildings, special powers and upgrades.
  • New graphics and sounds.
  • All 12 generals were made as diverse as possible. The gameplay for each general is unique.
  • Simplified micro management (since Contra 008).
  • Each faction speaks its own language (since Contra 008).
  • Increased stability in multiplayer games (since Contra 008).

USA Generals:

Air Force - Malcolm "Ace" Granger

Air Force general depends on speed and precision. He requires skillful
control and is heavy on micro management. While being a powerful general
the skill and experience required makes him difficult for many
beginners to play.

Laser - "Pinpoint" Townes

Laser is a versatile general strong in call situations. He is flexible and has
units to fill every combat role. As a result he has no weaknesses other
than being a specialist at nothing.

Super Weapon - Alexis Alexander

Advantage of this general is easy micro and very simple strategy. Almost the same
vs all enemies - build up around enemy until he dies. However, you
should not ignore other abilities.

Cybernetic - Algrin "A.I." Ironhand

The generic feature of this general is his mobility, which allows to move
an entire army very fast and create numerical superiority at desired
areas of the battlefield. His basic strategy is unstoppable maneuvering
along enemy base perimeter. If he finds a weak point in defense, he
moves there instantly and destroys the most significant targets.

China Generals:

Nuke - Tsing Shi Tao

Nuke General must rely on aggression to defend his base. He has no defenses
to hide behind while you wait for your nukes to load. The absence of
defense structures forces the player to be more active and aggressive.
Use your units to carry out counterattacks for defense and support your
main attack with super weapons.

Infantry - "Anvil" Shin Fai

Infantry is a volatile general given to decisive victories or defeats in the
early game. As expected, he relies on masses of infantry in the early
game, later reinforced by more infantry. In the late game he gains
powerful artillery strikes supported by the same infantry.

Tank - Ta Hun Kwai

His strategy is easy to understand, but not as easy to implement:
build more tanks and attack. But everything has its details.

Flame - Huang Lin Bao

He has the same strategy as tank general, but another means for its
implementation and another battle tactics. His vehicles are not as
armoured as tank general's ones, so he has to use artillery and
different tactics and tricks, instead of forcing his way through.

GLA Generals:

Toxin - Dr. Thrax

Toxin General specializes in area attacks and damage over time. He is
especially effective vs mobbed units and hordes. If well played, you
will find all of your positions unapproachable for the fields of acid
and poison.

Demolition - Rodall "Demo" Juhziz

He is a versatile and powerful general with demanding micro management needs.
Since almost all units are disposable, you must use them with care,
directing almost all kamikazes manually. The more assiduously you play -
the more complex it becomes for enemy to defend from your endless flows
of kamikazes. If you play properly, you can defeat any other general.

Stealth - Prince Kassad

While at a glance his units are weak and poorly suited of combat, Stealth
General is a deceptively powerful general using infiltration and
surprise to his advantage. He has long range sniper units capable of
attacking with impunity against units lacking stealth detection. He is a
challenging general to play, but has a strong reward for the effort
given.

Assault - Mahmud al Huchum

Assault is a flexible general with flexible units. He is low micro management and well suited
for most players. While having no spectacular abilities he also has no weaknesses.

Hi people,

it's been a long time since our last update, which was release of 008 FINAL version.

I hope you guys enjoy playing this great mod as much as we do. We have been playing many online games, we watched many walkthrough videos on YouTube and we are happy that people are so much interested in Contra. Because of all that, and because of all ideas we still have, we continued our work.

So, let's put it in some order. Let's start with USA.

- Many people were sad that we could not fix bugs which appeared with Web Defense System, we were sad because of that too. But, we found a way to use this great weapon, slightly changed. So, we present you Super Weapon general's Ion Tower defense.

Ion Tower defense will replace Fire Base artillery, so it is available at rank 1. It consumes power, can be garrisoned by 4 infantry units. It is a very precise artillery structure, effective vs all ground units.

- Next is Grendel defense system for SW general. Yes, you have probably seen this structure somewhere, it was used in Remix mod, and for USA Boss general, but now it's a part of SW general too. SW general's patriots are now changed, they are more effective but also cost more, they don't match up vs ECM tanks. This is where Grendel comes in, it's a very good anti-tank defense system. Does not depend on other defenses and brings good damage vs tanks.

- Let's continue with USA SW. Strategy Centers give you weapons if you choose bombardment strategy, right!? Before it was a boring artillery cannon for all USA generals. Not anymore, now they are unique and effective in their own ways. USA SW general has Ion Tower.

- Laser General has prototype of Rail Gun weapon, very devastating cannon.

- Laser general also has one good improvement. Colonel Burton now has a light saber instead of his knife attack. This attack is very effective vs tanks. He can kill rank 3 tanks with one blow. Col. Burton is also hidden while performing this attack, so if you see your tanks dying you better bring some scouts with you.

- That's it for USA... China didn't get any new visual candies (for now). But GLA did. This new tank, Marauder T-63, replaces the old Marauder model. New model is the finest of GLA units so far, and this honor is given to Assault general. Not only he is visual changed, he is also changed in his stats. He is more effective vs. tanks and structures now.

- New Challenge maps are also in progress. You can see, we are working on all aspects of the game. Below is shown challenge versus USA Boss.

- There are many more changes in balance and bug fixing. We read your comments, test everything and make changes. List of changes is big, and I won't post it right now because it could be changed in the future. Most important change that I can share with you is faster exp gaining. Yes, you heard good. Now you can get rank 5 a lot faster and game is more interesting.

- Last but not least, I would like to point you a few links to people that record and show Contra videos from time to time.

Is there a posebillity that you can nerf Juhziz in challange? I can defeat severl generals on medium, with slight challange, but I stand no chance at Juhziz at easy!!

I looked in my save history, and I appearently defeated him as Toxin. And completely smashed him as Cyber just now. But that's just 2 / 11. For the majority can I still not defeat him.

You need to have the mod files in the same folder as the one in Generals.exe. They cannot be in a sepearte one. The only possible problem I can think of.

I have to say that I really like the mod, but I don't know if I'd play with it for long. The units are awsome but the progression kinda kills it all. If you manage to pull off a good defense, you can starve the AI while they try to take you over with their TIER 1 units since they don't even capture neutral buildings. When there are no more resourses left you just have to pull off 3-4 top TIER units and rape the AI, even if he has all the resources TIER 1 units are getting wrecked.
So far from what I saw the Airforce General is soo OP. Had about 2000 kills and 10 losses (mainly bulldozers) against 3 hard and 4 easy. And the TOP TIER for the infantry general can survive 2 nukes one after another and heal through the radiation WTF!!! Havent tryed with the other units, but I think it'll be the same result. OP but nice mod thanks :)

You've made a good evaluation of the AI in its current state. Some of the generals look strong and others look weak because of the problematic Skirmish AI in the latest version. Most of the super units (you mentioned Infantry Battle Fortress) can survive a direct super weapon blast. However, this is not a balance issue. Nuclear Missile costs $5000 and it should not outperform the Battle Fortress ($7000). Watch online games on YouTube, you'll see that super units are defeatable. Radiation and toxins are not really effective against super units. Playing with AI would feel different as it does not take logical decisions, which causes its easy loss of units and structures, or has the upper hand because of the cheats (rank and money). I am trying to fix some of the AI problems in the last few days.

Isn't Dr.Thrax all kinds of weak? I mean, he has got the worst tier 1 of all generals(edit: ok, maybe Granger has got equally crappy T1, but where Granger progresses beautifully through the tiers, Thrax just stays more or less the same)! It'd really help if he got Scolos on tier 1(instead of Scorpions?). One more thing: could you make that toxin bunker have a detonate mode so it spills the fresh goody goody around?

Also: Could you please make gen.Alexander have exactly TWO Tomahawk Storms available in Tournament mode? She REALLY isn't competitive without at least two. Unless it's hard coded to limit SWs to one...

Dr. Thrax is one of the two GLA generals with the best defensive structures. Purchase Scorpion Rockets, you don't really need all that much at rank 1 if you are able to hit-n-run effectively (count Mortar Buggies in this situation too). We'll think about Toxin Bunker.

Number of super weapons is hard-coded. We can use any number as a limit, but that will also be the same number for Tournament Mode.

How are his things better than Huchum roadblocks or Juhziz firecrackers?

Some of his defensive structures in T1 need to leave Acid behind...
